Klezmer Brunch w/ The Klezmatics - City Winery

Since their emergence more than 25 years ago, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a "Jewish roots band," the Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form. They have performed in more than 20 countries and released 10 albums to date—most recently the two-CD Live at Town Hall, recorded in their home base of New York and released in celebration of the band's silver anniversary. On their Grammy-winning 2006 album Wonder Wheel, the Klezmatics set a dozen previously unsung Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, widening their stylistic base by largely diverging from klezmer. They have also recently served as the subject of a feature-length documentary film, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground. Pulling from every element of his diverse musical training this new repertoire include Sheridan's arrangements of South American dances, traditional Romani music, gypsy swing and selections of from his first album. Samba Surf includes Ben Rosenblum - piano and accordion; Kanoa Mendenhall - bass; and Ben Zweig - drums and Everton Isidoro - percussion.

César "Pupy" Pedroso (born César de las Mercedes Pedroso Fernández in Havana on 24 September 1946) is a Cuban pianist who became famous with Orquesta Revé and then as a founding member of Los Van Van. For many years, Pedroso wrote some of Van Van's most important songs such as "Calla Calla", "Tranquilo, Mota", "Seis Semanas", "El buenagente" and many others. In 2001 he founded his own band Pupy y Los que Son, Son. In 2006, he has recorded with his band 4 albums and all have been a great success.

Anbessa Orchestra is a seven piece group based in New York that draws its inspiration from the kind of classic Ethiopian music anthologized on the cult Ethiopiques series. Anbessa’s approach to the music is personal, but never strays far from the 60’s and 70’s sound of the original. They play some better and lesser known tunes from some of the Ethiopian masters as well as their own compositions. The result is an original sound that would have fit nicely on the Ethio-funk scene of 1970’s Addis Ababa. The Erik Satie Quartet - Barbès

The Erik Satie Quartet is a wind group whose focus of repertoire starts with Erik Satie, his times, and beyond. The four lithe and muscular voices present music that is unique and strange for the uninitiated, yet with warmth and humanity at its core. The group performs the second Saturday of every month at 4 PM, phonometrically calculated to be the perfect time of day for a Pernod. Repertoire is drawn from the works of Milhaud, Auric, Poulenc, Stravinsky, Britten, Durey, Sibelius, and of course the Velvet Gentleman himself. Formed in 2010 by Sudanese-American singer, songwriter, and ethnomusicologist Alsarah, the group's self-coined "East African Retropop" sound combines original material with traditional music of central Sudan with inspiration from a collective love for Nubian music and a genuine belief that soul transcends all cultural and linguistic barriers. New York Choral Society Presents Summer Sings 2017 - Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Draesel Hall

Audience will be the singers for the evening, taking place on August 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd This August, the New York Choral Society hosts its annual Summer Sings. The public is invited to sing and socialize with members and the artistic staff of NYChoral including Music Director David Hayes and Associate Conductor Michael Ciavaglia. The participants will be able to step into the shoes of an NYChoral member and sing along with the conductor, pianists and soloists to a different piece each week. After the sing-along, the audience, chorus members and staff will continue the festivities with an after party around snacks and drinks. Each event begins at 7:00 pm at The Church of the Holy Trinity’s Draesel Hall, 316 E. 88th St. on August 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd. Mezzo-soprano Heather Johnson and tenor Ben Warschawski will perform as guest soloists in the Mozart Requiem on August 23. Choral music enthusiasts and novices are encouraged to attend to brush up on sight-reading skills and enjoy the bonding effect of choral singing. Bulla en El Barrio - Barbès

Led by Barranquilla native Carolina Oliveros, the drummers and singers of Bulla en el Barrio explore new and classic Bailes Cantados of Bullerengue. Bullerengue originated on the Carribean Colombian coast of Colombia. The music has deep African roots, it consists mostly of drummers and female singers and posesses a mesmerizing, trance-like quality. Carolina Oliveros belongs to a younger generation of cantadoras who have a deep connection to the tradition but have also been influences by all the music they were exposed to growing up: classical music, rock and cumbia among others.
