Art Criticism & Agendas: Representation & Expansion - DUMBO
May 19, 2019 - Brooklyn

A.I.R. Gallery and SOHO20 are pleased to announce the next conversation in a collaborative programming series, Art Criticism & Agendas, happening at both spaces this spring, as a conceptual extension of SOHO20's "Rethinking Feminism" initiative. For Art Criticism & Agendas, SOHO20 Curatorial Fellow Mira Dayal brings art critics together to consider how they position their criticism as an act of solidarity, for whom, and on what terms. In one of its earliest uses, solidarity—a complicated term whose meaning has shifted over time—was tied to the concept of debt, signifying that each involved party could be held financially responsible for another.

Instrument Q&A with Director Jem Cohen and Fugazi Member Guy Picciotto - Nitehawk Prospect Park
May 20, 2019 - Brooklyn

A beautiful mix of visuals from 16mm, 8mm and video shot by Jem Cohen melds with sync-sound by the legendary Washington D.C. band Fugazi in the stunning documentary, Instrument. Wholly original, you wouldn't expect Fugazi to do anything traditional and their documentary is no exception. Covering a ten year period, from 1987-1996, Instrument provides access to stage shows, rehearsals, recording sessions and interviews with their fans. It extends beyond a portrait of a band and bleeds into a specific time period in music that is so close to many hearts. Named after one of the songs on their 1993 album In On the Kill Taker, the documentary also spawned one of the best soundtracks in history.

Thomas Page McBee: Amateur w/ Darnell L. Moore - Books are Magic
May 20, 2019 - Cobble Hill

In this "refreshing and radical" (The Guardian) narrative, Thomas McBee, a trans man, sets out to uncover what makes a man—and what being a "good" man even means—through his experience training for and fighting in a charity boxing match at Madison Square Garden. A self-described "amateur" at masculinity, McBee embarks on a wide-ranging exploration of gender in society, examining sexism, toxic masculinity, and privilege. As he questions the limitations of gender roles and the roots of masculine aggression, he finds intimacy, hope, and even love in the experience of boxing and in his role as a man in the world. Despite personal history and cultural expectations, "Amateur is a reminder that the individual can still come forward and fight" (The A.V. Club). "Sharp and precise, open and honest," (Women's Review of Books), McBee's writing asks questions "relevant to all people, trans or not" (New York Newsday). Through interviews with experts in neuroscience, sociology, and critical race theory, he constructs a deft and thoughtful examination of the role of men in contemporary society. Amateur is a graceful and uncompromising look at gender by a fearless, fiercely honest writer. Thomas ... (read more)

At the same time, she offers a deeply moving portrait of one of the country's most beloved writers and her struggle with fame, success, and the mystery of artistic creativity. Casey Cep is a writer from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. After graduating from Harvard she earned an M.Phil. at Oxford as a Rhodes ... (read more)
