Opening the Window - Agora Gallery
Through April 16, 2019 - NYC

Agora Gallery is pleased to announce Opening the Window, on view March 26, 2019 through April 16, 2019. The exhibition features eleven artists, all of whom present unique perspectives on the dichotomy between figuration and abstraction. This selection of artists includes Howard Harris, Benjamin L.M., Cordes Yorio, Vanessa Elaine, Renzo Sanchez-Silva, Emmanuelle Auzias, Vargas Guevara, Fleur Campbell, Claudio Stefanoni, Wendy Yeager, and Carlos Arango (clos). The exhibition title Opening the Window suggests a spontaneous sense of discovery, allowing a new atmosphere and light to enter the closure of a room. The more traditionally figurative works on exhibit incorporate different media and showcase landscapes; the less representational works, by contrast, alter conventional representations of figure and ground, creating a new perspectival gestalt in the process. Lastly, the purely abstract pieces seem to communicate a covert message, a semaphore of pure color, contours, and shapes. The works on view introduce viewers to new ways of decoding the binary of abstraction/figuration. Between these two poles is the making of representation, the fidelity art has to spatial perceptio... Archduke Rudolph: Beethoven’s Pupil and Patron - Bohemian National Hall
April 17, 2019 - New York

Ignat Solzhenitsyn, piano Korbinian Altenberger, violin Na-Young Baek, cello Illustrated talk by Ignat Solzhenitsyn PROGRAM Beethoven Violin Sonata No.10 in G major, Op.96 Beethoven Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97 “Archduke” The most significant of Beethoven’s noble patrons during his years in Vienna was Archduke Rudolph of Austria, youngest brother of the Emperor Franz. Beethoven began teaching Rudolph piano in around 1803–04, and the archduke later became his sole composition student. He was also the only one of his patrons whose financial support continued uninterrupted until the composer’s death. Beethoven generally scorned aristocrats, but it appears his relationship with Rudolph was different. In the composer’s own words, the archduke treated him ‘like a friend, not a servant’. Beethoven dedicated fifteen of his most important works to Rudolph (more than to any other individual), including the Fourth and Fifth Piano Concertos and, following the archduke’s appointment as a cardinal and then as Archbishop of Olmütz in 1819, the Missa solemnis. In this programme we present two of the chamber works dedicated to him – the Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 96 and the ‘Arc... (read more)

The show will feature recent paintings that address current divisions in a globalized world—class struggles, migrations, and gender inequalities—echoing the writings of socially conscious French novelist Édouard Louis. Drawing upon influences going from Caravaggio to Jeff Wall, Bresson inserts modern-day figures into timeless grisailles, eschewing anachronism to merge past and present.

David T. Little - Miller Theatre
April 18, 2019 - New York

David T. Little grapples with essential human issues through powerfully dramatic compositions. This Portrait features two major works—companion pieces presented together for the first time—that explore the tension between the individual, secrecy, and state violence. Haunt of Last Nightfall, a visceral "ghost play in two acts" for percussion quartet and electronics, examines America's role in the 1981 massacre at El Mozote. AGENCY, for string quartet and electronics, questions individual autonomy, whether we are subject to unknown and powerful social and political forces. Together, they offer a disquieting account of our place in contemporary society.

"Our goal was to make songs that are true to us, without hiding behind any kind of façade," says Georgia Nott, who co-founded BROODS with her brother Caleb in 2013. "Instead of overthinking everything like, Is that too weird? or Does this make enough sense?, we made a point of just completely trusting in ourselves and trusting in each other.

Children of Bodom - Hexed - Irving Plaza
April 19, 2019 - New york

Children of Bodom Formed in Espoo, Finland in 1993 originally under the moniker Inearthed, CHILDREN OF BODOM had an extraordinary start to their career. Their '90s take off was so impressive that many new metal bands still look up to it today –almost all of their albums earned platinum or gold status in Finland and over the past twenty five years they've become regulars on some of the world's biggest stages. 2019 beckons in a new era for a revitalized and bloodthirsty Hate Crew, who will present their 10thstudio album Hexed on March 8th. It's been three years since the release of I Worship Chaos and Bodom have taken time out around touring to carefully develop this new work, which packs a hell of a punch. History tells us that having an extensive time frame to work on a project can often result in procrastination and loss of focus –but with Hexed the reverse has manifest in this 11 track, impressively stripped back melo-death, rock-n-roll-rampage. In an album packed full of killer tracks, 'Under Grass and Clover'-once more, a song blessed with melodies that evoke images of both '70s prog and '80s pop metal -has been picked out for extra attention by Alexi. The Inferno of Dante Alighieri: A Reading - Cathedral of St.John the Divine`
Through April 19, 2019 - New York

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine hosts the annual Maundy Thursday reading of the Inferno of Dante Alighieri on Thursday, April 18 from 9:15 pm – 12:00 am at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan. This longtime tradition, part of the Cathedral’s Maundy Thursday offerings during the week leading to Easter, has called thousands of New Yorkers to descend into Dante Alighieri’s literary hellscape each year. The annual reading of selections from the Inferno brings poets and friends into the “dark woods” of Dante’s haunting vision to hear the unforgettable descriptions of suffering, punishment, and moral redemption. This dramatic literary event takes place in the Crossing of the Cathedral, with selected cantos read by honored guests, distinguished poets, eminent translators, and Inferno reading regulars. Readers this year include musician Laurie Anderson; poet and memoirist Eileen Myles; the Cathedral’s Poet in Residence, Marilyn Nelson; actor Frank Messina; and translator Michael Palma. Dante scholar Anthony Viscusi will conclude the reading with the final canto of Dante’s Paradiso, an allegorical depiction of the glorious Hea... (read more)

Crawford will be stepping into The Garden's famed Boxing ring for the third time in his career. Khan (33-4, 20 KOs) burst into the public consciousness at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens when, at 17 years of age, he captured a silver medal for Great Britain. The lightning quick former unified 140-pound champion has won seven of his last eight bouts as he prepares to take on the pound-for-pound king in a legacy-defining superfight. Before the main event, a pair of 21-year-old wunderkinds — Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson — will look to steal the show in their respective co-feature bouts. Steve... (read more)

Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union address—which will be on the view for the first time. For Freedoms’ stylized scenes of the everyday reference Rockwell’s iconic style while bringing new, more inclusive representations of the country to the discussion of our core values. Members of For Freedoms will be in residence at the ICP Museu... (read more)

NEW YORK -- New Stage Theatre Company (www.newstagetheatre.org) will bring its signature blend of inventive choreography and striking visual design to a modernist masterpiece of German theater with its production of "Electronic City" (2003) by Falk Richter, translated by Marlene J. Norst, adapted and directed by Ildiko Nemeth. Performances are April 12 to May 10 at The New Stage Performance Space, 36 West 106th Street (basement level). "Electronic City" is the story of Tom and Joy, who seek belonging, connection, and meaning amid lives in which living is squeezed between long-distance travel, the buffeting of instant communication and the commercial pressures of their jobs. Tom, lost and confused, and Joy, paralyzed by the constant demands of her barcode scanning job, collide at an airport gate. The two are so fully, hypnotically, and unhappily controlled by devices, mass media, and the general speed of modern life that, though they seek each other throughout the play, their finding each other on the same small stage is far from guaranteed. The production paints the isolation and alienation of our technology-driven, image-saturated culture with a dynamic mix of projections, ... (read more)

Champeny states “Mosaics enable me to elicit the tension and stories between hand sculpted and cast pixels and the overall image they compose. I want my art to open a conversation for the viewer. I hope people discovering and viewing my pieces will connect their own experiences to the choices I made when creating the work”.

Among Others: Photography and the Group - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

Through December 31, 2020 - Upper West Side

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
