Class time will be spent on active writing, workshops, experiencing, listening to and responding to visitors, a little editing, and you will also practice performing your new work! We will be visited by amazing working poets (TBA), read poetry, words, and letters from the past and present. And since it's SUMMER, we will take a writing excursion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as to the sidewalks, parks, and even the New York City Poetry Festival for inspiration and writing. We will feel the summer heat, eat pizza, eat ice cream and write hungrily, c... (read more)

Los Reyes - Film Forum
Through August 27, 2019 - New York

In Santiago, Chile, Chola and Football are two homeless dogs – who aren't homeless at all. Scrappy, adorable mutts, they live in Los Reyes, the city's oldest skateboard park, kept company by dozens of teenage boys who are constantly in motion. (Surely the film's title also refers to the dogs, truly kings of their quirky world.) One dog constantly schleps around a deflated football (or golf ball or empty soda bottle); the other romps alongside him day and night. The voices of the young skaters, set against the noises of the city, form a soundscape: bragging, complaining, joking, sharing the daily experiences of working-class kids. One day, two dog houses miraculously appear in the park – just in time to provide shelter for the coming winter. A touching film about the mysteries and joys of friendship: 2-legged on wheels and 4-legged on the ground. "An extraordinary film." – Jonathan Romney, Film Comment

Point Less, is a follow up to Onabulé’s last album, It’s The Peace That Deafens, with the new album boldly expressing his views on social injustice, reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. It is an activist’s call – at once a celebration of life and a cautionary take on the social forces that threaten it. Violence, immigration, xenophobia, betrayal, and dignity are themes considered on Point Less, rendered with a powerful and knowing generosity of spirit. Onabulé is rueful yet optimistic. So embodies the artistic – and entrepreneurial – philosophy of Onabulé, whose latest release, Point Less, is a giant leap forward in Onabulé's artistic canon. Moreover, it affirms his place among contemporary vocalists. He is a rugged individualist, a deeply soulful musi... (read more)

Bunin/Berberova: In Paris/The Waiter & The Slut - Pushkin Hall at The Center at West Park
Through August 29, 2019 - New York

Don't miss the hottest cult-show of the summer! This August, The Russian Arts Theater and Studio presents an encore run of two gripping love stories by Russian émigré writers: Nobel Prize winner Ivan Bunin and the provocative Nina Berberova. Driven to exile following the revolution, former Russian aristocrats now find themselves isolated as new immigrants in Paris. Their new lives are spent battling sickness, searching for afforable apartments and waiting in pawn shops, Ivan Bunin's In Paris tells the brief and bittersweet encounter of an ex-general of the old imperial army and Olga Alexandrovna, a young woman now working as a waitress in a Russian restaurant. Upon a chance meeting, they momentarily find a sense of home in each other’s arms. In Nina Berberova's raw and searing The Waiter And The Slut, Tania, the daughter of a St. Petersburg big-shot, now finds herself in Paris, where her husband dies in a mental hospital and she is reduced to surviving on meals paid for by male admirers. As she turns older, her admirers grow more grotesque, and she soon finds herself trapped in a devastating affair with a waiter—a man she soon grows to hate.

Ken Vandermark & Mars Williams Duo w/Steve Marquette, Solo - 244 Rehearsal Studios
August 30, 2019 - New York

Hoofbeats of the Snorting Swine is an album by Cinghiale, a reed duo composed of Mars Williams and Ken Vandermark, which was released in 1996 on Eighth Day Music. This show allows us to get the feeling of what this creative duo are doing now nearly 25 years later. It is rare to have a Saxophone duo. I expect the duo will tear a hole in our reality on this night. The Penguin Guide to Jazz states "Typical Vandermark in that it feels as if the duo is running (or careering) down composed lines, even as they blow right away from them... A dialogue for two epic sensibilities, Opening will be a solo guitar performance by Steve Marquette. Marquette is well known in the Chicago area where he has played in groups with Mars Williams and Tim Daisy. You can hear him on the Relay Recording "For Robin" with Tim Daisy.

Sailor - Theater for the NEw City
Through August 31, 2019 - New York

"Sailor," a story of love, death, and immigration. At its core, "Sailor," is a love story between Sofi, an Italian writer in her late 30s trying to find a publisher for her novel, and Juan, a young Mexican ex-gangster-turned-dishwasher. They meet in the kitchen of a New York City restaurant and, as they each chase their own particular American dream, their worlds collide. The writing process of Sailor began by collecting immigrants' stories from bustling restaurant kitchens in Harlem. Seeing as the themes of immigration, power abuse, and the artist’s struggle against the pressure to conform are central to the Sailor theatre collective, these sparse kitchen-collected notes served as fuel and inspiration for the fictional tale of Sailor. LULAC, the oldest Latino Civil Rights organization in the U.S. and whose mission is to fight discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or national origin directed toward the Latino community, presents the play Sailor.  The play will be part of the 10th edition of the Dream Up Festival held in New York at the iconic Theater of The New City (Johnson Theater). This is Like That - Theater For The New City (Community Theater)
September 01, 2019 - New York City

Theater for the New City’s Dream Up Festival will present the world premiere of “This is Like That” by Michael Sean Cirelli, a solo performance piece in the form of an eccentric slide lecture with a temperamental carousel projector and an apple. After unexpectedly realizing that he’s meant to be giving a lecture to everyone around him, a befuddled language professor attempts to explain the beauty he finds in language—only he cannot find the words. A piece for anyone who has ever felt misunderstood, or felt they might feel understood but weren’t. “This is Like That” is a one-person play that grapples with questions about language, identity, religion, and the stories we tell others and ourselves.

September 01, 2019 - New York

Little Rock tells the riveting true story of the Little Rock Nine, the first black students to attend their city's formerly segregated central high school. What began as their quest for a better education soon became a national crisis, igniting the passions of a divided country and sparking a historic fight for justice in the Jim Crow south. On the cusp of the Civil Rights movement, a changing world watched as these nine children from Arkansas battled for their rights with only a book and pencil. At once harrowing and hopeful, LITTLE ROCK brings urgently to life the Nine's untold personal stories of challenge and resilience, conjuring memories of America not so long ago. From writer and director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, this deeply moving play honors the bravery of these young heroes and asks audiences: Would you have had the courage?

Eraserhead - IFC Center
Through September 01, 2019 - New York

David Lynch once described his stunning debut feature simply as "a dream of dark and troubling things," but the unclassifiable ERASERHEAD is so much more: an expressionistic headtrip, a Grand Guignol nightmare, a pitch-black comedy of manners, and even a deeply personal allegory about the (post-) nuclear family. Amidst a monochromatic wasteland teeming with smoke and shadows, Jack Nance's wire-haired wage slave Henry struggles to navigate the horrors of mutant offspring, sinister hallucinations and, most terrifying of all, his new in-laws. A midnight movie sensation at the original Waverly Theater, ERASERHEAD returns to 6th Ave.

"Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis & Butt-head and co-creator of King of the Hill, has a cool day job. But it wasn't always thus. From his memories of Dilbert-like employment in anonymous corporate America, Judge has written and directed OFFICE SPACE, a devious comedy about life in the cubicle. "Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) is a cog in the wheel of Initech, where various nerds and nebbishes punch the clock while their lives just tick away. It's a place where copiers shred your work in a never-ending state of "paper jam," where there isn't even a stapler you can call your own, and where the only thing to look forward to is Hawaiian-shirt Friday. "Staffers are downsized, humiliated, forced to account for their value to the company and, when all else fails, sent to the Gulag of the basement. One long-timer refuses to get the hint even though his paychecks have been cut off. Each day of officious bosses and meaningless paperwork is worse than the day before — leading Peter to conclude that each new day is the worst yet of his young life. "With a judiciously executed hip-hop soundtrack and the same anti-conformist spirit that informs Judge's TV cartoons, OFFICE SPACE can expect to ... (read more)

Graffiti Warriors: Bama and Pistol, Pioneers of Subway Art - The Village Alliance
Through September 13, 2019 - New York

This is free and open to the public. In the early 1970s, the felt-tipped, penned initials on New York City's subway morphed into multicolored lettering and illustrations sprayed on the trains and tunnels with aerosol paint cans. Inner-city kids from the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn viewed the trains as a rolling canvas showcasing their art for all New Yorkers, rich and poor alike. In so doing, they pioneered an indigenous urban American art form--graffiti, now recognized worldwide as the visual component of hip-hop culture. This exhibition celebrates the past and present art of two graffiti artists--Richard Admiral, Jr. and his buddy Lonnie Heller, aka Bama and Pistol--who helped pioneer subway graffiti before the art form was chronicled by acclaimed photographers Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper in the late '70s.

Through September 14, 2019 - NYC

In A Splendid Summer Showcase, the 19 artists represented share a novel way of viewing the world; a way that once transferred into an artistic expression, either in painting, sculpture, or photography, unfolds naturally and genuinely the beauty in nature that surrounds us all and the human emotions that emerge from day-to-day life experiences. The artists, by following their intuition, their passions, their interests, their morals, and their views, create pieces that are intriguing, meaningful, and relatable. Through the dense organic textures, bold colors, sharp marks, dramatic contrasts with light and darkness, all done with various mediums, the artists remind the viewer of the miracle and mystery of life. Although the artists come from all types of backgrounds, they all include an aspect of their respective culture to their pieces, allowing A Splendid Summer Showcase to be a worldly exhibition that unites us all through the power of art. The artists compose landscapes and portraits, abstract and realistic, all inspired by themes surrounding politics, society, religion, race, music, literature, dance, nature, and overall humanity, transpiring compassion, positivity, and peace.... Walt Whitman: Bard of Democracy - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 15, 2019 - Manhattan

"Comrades! I am the bard of Democracy," Walt Whitman announced in a notebook in 1859. Over his 73 years (1819–1892), he essentially made good on that claim. From humble origins in Long Island and Brooklyn, he earned a global audience that never stops growing. On the two hundredth anniversary of his birth he continues to speak to new generations. The exhibition explores Whitman's process of self-invention, from his early years as a journalist, through the early 1850s when Whitman began to write more privately and poetically, to his final years. Whitman not only sounded a "barbaric yawp" over the rooftops of the world, but he also helped his country to reconcile its famous contradictions through his inclusivity and his extraordinary body of work. Several of Whitman's notebooks will be on display, as well as his portraitist's copy of Leaves of Grass (1855) and the famous letter written to Whitman by Ralph Waldo Emerson commending that book. The exhibition will establish Whitman's unblinking witness to the Civil War and display the great poems that he wrote in honor of the martyred president including "O Captain! My Captain!" Also on view are documents from Oscar Wilde, Hart Crane, Fe... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

Known for her gravity-defying suspension sculptures that explore themes of science fiction, space, gender, and humor, E. V. Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity. The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

Minerva Cuevas: Disidencia - The Mishkin Gallery
Through November 01, 2019 - New York

NEW YORK, NY —The Mishkin Gallery presents Disidencia, a solo exhibition by artist Minerva Cuevas. The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 29, 6 to 8 pm, and will be on view through to November 1, 2019. For her first solo exhibition in New York, artist Minerva Cuevas presents a body of video work that makes concise connections between the consequences of dominant economic ideologies and urgent, global ecological and social issues. Gathering eight video installations and projections, Disidencia (Dissent) brings together a range of visual strategies that Cuevas has deployed to engage with such topics as the decay of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, corporate America’s insatiable brand of globalization, and a video cartography of protests and resistance throughout her home city. At a time when divisive politics are on the rise and deregulation and privatization seem almost unavoidable, Cuevas shows us an alternative to such dangers and empowers our own social relations. “Titled after one of Cuevas’s emblematic works, Disidencia serves to establish opposition and active contestation,” explains Gabriel Bogossian, who has co-curated the exhibition alongside Solange Farkas, dire... Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia. Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)
