Wsou Presents Soulfly: Ritual Tour – Plus Special Guests - Gramercy Theater
February 11, 2019 - Grammercy Park

SOULFLY Both ancient and modern cultures rely heavily on rituals. From religious proceedings that date back millennia to daily 21st century routines such as checking social media, humanity gravitates towards ritualistic behavior for the appearance of order and a semblance of control over life's chaos. Perhaps more than any other artform, ceremonious behavior defines heavy metal. Thousands of fans worship at the altar of a speaker or congregate in person for the sermon of a live show. Two decades into their storied career, SOULFLY continue to engender near cultish zeal with each subsequent album and tour. In that sense, the group's eleventh full-length, »Ritual« [Nuclear Blast], lives up to the promise of its name with a metallic ceremony of the highest order. The iconic gold-certified quartet—Max Cavalera [vocals, guitar], Marc Rizzo [lead guitar], Zyon Cavalera [drums], and Mike Leon [bass]—cast their word in bludgeoning riffs, thunderous percussion, and menacing growls. The title proves apropos to say the least. "I've always felt that metal is very ritualistic," affirms Max. "I also like one word titles," he smiles. During 2018, Max and Co. began to prepare this latest body ... (read more)

The Archaeology of Colors Polychromy and Classical Chinese Bronze Art - Institute for the Study of the Ancient World
February 12, 2019 - New York

Allison Miller Researchers of Hellenistic art have long recognized that many statues that now appear as works of pure white marble were originally polychrome. In early Chinese art, in contrast, the hallowed works of China's classical antiquity—the bronzes—are generally believed to have been unpainted. After all, why would artisans paint over an expensive bronze surface? In recent years, however, many varieties of bronzes have been uncovered with colorful ornamentation including sacrificial vessels, figural sculptures, mirrors, lamps, weapons, and personal ornaments. Using this data, this talk will survey China's polychrome bronze tradition from the Shang to the Han (1600 BCE-220 CE), considering the diverse functions assumed by painted ornamentation and identifying two major transitions in polychrome bronze art in the 5th c. BCE and the mid-2nd century BCE. Special attention will be paid to technical aspects of painting craft in early China, particularly the development of new binding agents in the Western Han.

Revolver & Wsou Present Corrosion of Conformity - Gramercy Theater
February 13, 2019 - Grammercy Park

Corrosion of Conformity are reuniting with guitarist/vocalist Pepper Keenan for UK/European and North American dates. Other than a few surprise appearances, this will be the first time Keenan has toured with the band since 2006. This will also be the first time the "Deliverance" lineup of the group has played together since 2001. C.O.C. recently emerged from hibernation as a trio and released 2012's eponymous album and 2014's "IX" to wide acclaim, but many have been eagerly awaiting the return of Pepper Keenan. The band were originally an influential hardcore punk/heavy metal crossover act before reaching critical success with a new lineup on 1991's "Blind" album. That trajectory continued with wider appeal as Keenan took over as primary vocalist on "Deliverance" (1994) and "Wiseblood" (1996). These two recordings in particular fused the raw energy of the previous albums with some great strides forward in classic rock inspired songwriting and more spacious production and execution, which were often copied but rarely equalled. This juggernaut gained mass and momentum with relentless touring alongside Metallica, Clutch, Eyehategod and many more.

This winter, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents “If You Want to Know about Andy Warhol,” a four-week course examining the artistic contributions of Andy Warhol. The course introduces participants to Warhol’s work across media, explores connections between Warhol and his peers, and sheds new light on the relevance of his practice for working artists today. Alongside his paintings, the attendees will consider Warhol’s films, photographs, and multimedia performances, while also delving into his use of commercial products and celebrity culture. Finally, the classes explore Warhol’s rich engagement with the social landscape of his friends, fellow artists, and lovers, asking how he transformed the world he lived in into art and what his might reveal about the lesser-known political commitments and critiques put forward by the king of Pop Art. The master class will be led by Josh Lubin-Levy, a fellow at the Whitney and member of the faculty at the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance at Wesleyan University and in the department of Visual Studies at The New School. Participants can attend one of three sessions • Option 1: Wednesdays, January 23 and 30, and Feb... (read more)

ABOUT DANTE: Combining acoustic indie folk and soul, Dante is known for his expressive vocals and multi-instrumental style. Rooted in tradition yet fearlessly creative, Dante’s live performances include his contemporary take on the one man band in which he simultaneously plays a number of instruments. Switching between guitar and mandolin, he accompanies himself by playing bass, harmonica and percussion all at once. Coming from the folk tradition, Dante's award winning compositions have thoughtful lyrics that often tell a story or speak to a person’s life experiences. Described by The Independent as a “multi-talented musician,” Dante was chosen to star in Levi’s "What's True" commercial campaign. Artists such as Ben Folds, Guster, and Am... (read more)

The Unicorn - Anthology Film Archives
February 16, 2019 - New York

This extraordinary, years-in-the-making documentary grabs hold of a truly unique central figure: outsider musician Peter Grudzien, the one-man musical force behind "The Unicorn," which has been described as possibly the first openly gay country album. But country doesn't begin to describe the dizzying range of music included on this 1974 release. Peter composed, performed, and recorded "The Unicorn" entirely in his childhood home in Astoria, Queens, and sold the 500 pressed copies out of a suitcase on the streets of the city. Despite this unpromising genesis, the album was rescued from oblivion and re-released in the 1990s, prompting the music critic and collector Paul Major to declare it the "greatest New York LP since the first Velvet Underground or first New York Dolls."

Phantom Thread - Anthology Film Archives
February 16, 2019 - New York

Paul Thomas Anderson's most recent film distinguished itself, among other ways, by eliciting a dizzying range of responses, many of them virtually diametrically opposed. In portraying the relationship between a figure who embodies the myth of white male genius (Daniel Day Lewis's monstrously perfectionist fashion designer, Reynolds Woodcock) and his seemingly long-suffering, powerless love interest (Vicky Krieps's Alma), is it perpetuating toxic gender relations or subtly deconstructing them? One thing is for sure: aside from its intoxicating set design and mise-en-scène and its typically stylized and finely wrought performances, PHANTOM THREAD is not the film it initially appears to be. Slowly but surely it clears an unexpected path for itself, only gradually revealing its modus operandi and forcing us to recalibrate our attitudes and expectations. Ultimately, it becomes a sly and subtly subversive exploration of gender and power dynamics, and a worthy addition to the Valentine's Day Massacre lineup.

Deeds Not Words - The Tank
Through February 16, 2019 - New York

Eccentric Theater Company is proud to present the world premiere of Deeds Not Words, a radically inclusive and intersectional retelling of two Women's Suffrage Era satires: How the Vote Was Won & The Spirit of '76. Deeds Not Words is directed by Chelsea Anderson-Long. As voting rights are being gutted and a women's right to choose is on its most unsteady footing in a generation, ETC. presents this evening of shockingly relevant Women's Suffrage Era satires. In the Pro-Suffrage How the Vote Was Won, working class Horace's world is turned upside-down when a household of lady-relatives arrive, demanding to be “supported”. Only when he is confronted with the idea of a future without women in the workforce does this anti-suffrage stalwart realizes the error of his ways. The Spirit of Seventy-Six; or, The Coming Woman, was written as anti-suffrage propaganda in the years after the Civil War, as the women's suffrage movement was gaining speed. It tells the “horrifying” prophecy of a future of female dominance, played for delicious irony. These plays are two hilarious examples of how theater can be used as effective tools to fight against encroaching civil rights violations. Deeds No... (read more)

The Unicorn - Anthology Film Archives
February 17, 2019 - New York

This extraordinary, years-in-the-making documentary grabs hold of a truly unique central figure: outsider musician Peter Grudzien, the one-man musical force behind "The Unicorn," which has been described as possibly the first openly gay country album. But country doesn't begin to describe the dizzying range of music included on this 1974 release. Peter composed, performed, and recorded "The Unicorn" entirely in his childhood home in Astoria, Queens, and sold the 500 pressed copies out of a suitcase on the streets of the city. Despite this unpromising genesis, the album was rescued from oblivion and re-released in the 1990s, prompting the music critic and collector Paul Major to declare it the "greatest New York LP since the first Velvet Underground or first New York Dolls." By the time filmmakers Isabelle Dupuis and Tim Geraghty encountered Grudzien, though, mainstream recognition remained elusive, with Peter himself living a marginalized and paranoia-fueled life in Queens with his forbidding, nonagenarian father, Joseph, and his schizophrenic twin sister, Terry. THE UNICORN immerses us in Peter's life, a hermetic world transfigured by his musical talent and stubborn resilience, b... (read more)

Phantom Thread - Anthology Film Archives
February 17, 2019 - New York

Punch-drunk Love - Anthology Film Archives
February 17, 2019 - New York

As a quasi-romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE may have seemed at the time to represent a sidestep from the increasingly ambitious and weighty trajectory of Paul Thomas Anderson's career, but in retrospect it remains one of his greatest and most unusual achievements. What distinguishes PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE above all is the extent to which the film's own rhythms and textures mirror the fractured, anxious psyche of its profoundly strange and sometimes alarmingly dysfunctional protagonist. Sandler is Barry Egan – shy, recessive, yet prone to volcanic outbursts of anger – and the film charts the unlikely romance that develops when Emily Watson's Leda appears in his life. Flirting with romantic comedy and the musical, but with a hard edge and unsettling vision that's entirely unique, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is, like its protagonist, equal parts sentimental and unhinged.

"Betty and the Belrays" - Theater for the New City
Through February 17, 2019 - NEW YORK CITY

Girl groups are now an iconic part of the history of the recording industry in America. In a brief, shining period between the payola scandal and the British invasion, American girl groups swamped the charts with songs that are now classic: mostly sweet harmonies on sentimental themes, with classic melody constructions and simplistic love lyrics. Partially because of the concern that America's teens would like the songs better if they didn't know the singers' color, many girl groups were anonymous except for their recordings. Almost all of them were black, but that was not known to many fans at the time. "Betty & The Belrays" asks, "what would have happened if a white girl group had actually tried to recapitulate the careers of these black groups?" If you love the songs of The Chiffons, The Crystals, The Shirelles and The Ronettes, you'll find heaven in this production, whose music recaptures the innovation and fresh, optimistic buoyancy that ruled the AM airwaves in the Kennedy era. The playwright calls attention to the importance of black music in our culture by honoring the imitation that was its sincerest form of flattery. He also shows off the risks that white perform... Constantin Brancusi Sculpture - The Museum of Modern Art
Through February 24, 2019 - Manhattan

Poet Erza Pound spoke of artist Constantin Brancusi's work as providing "the master keys to the world of form." Over a career that spanned half a century, Brancusi's innovations transformed sculpture as it had been known, and influenced generations of artists to come. After moving to Paris in 1904 from his native Romania, Brancusi affected the appearance of a Romanian peasant—a long beard, work shirt, and sandals—while embedding himself in avant-garde art circles. He soon began pushing modernist sculpture to the threshold of abstraction, developing a new, simplified vocabulary of graceful crescents, gleaming ovoids, and rough-hewn blocks that often evoked rather than resembled the things named in their titles, such as Bird in Space or Fish. He put the natural properties of his materials on display, carving directly into wood and stone and polishing metal to high reflectivity. The bases for his sculptures were often built of stacked elements—wood cubes, cylindrical slices, pyramidal blocks, or cruciform stones—becoming an integral component of the work itself and hinting at the possibility of infinite rearrangement, an idea that would prove fertile in future decades.

Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow - New-York Historical Society Museum
Through March 03, 2019 - New York

Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow explores the struggle for full citizenship and racial quality that unfolded in the 50 years after the Civil War. When slavery ended in 1865, a period of Reconstruction began, leading to such achievements as the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution. By 1868, all persons born in the United States were citizens and equal under the law. But efforts to create an interracial democracy were contested from the start. A harsh backlash ensued, ushering in a half century of the "separate but equal" age of Jim Crow. Opening to mark the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment, the exhibition is organized chronologically from the end of the Civil War to the end of World War I and highlights the central role played by African Americans in advocating for their rights. It also examines the depth and breadth of opposition to black advancement. Art, artifacts, photographs, and media will help visitors explore these transformative decades in American history, and understand their continuing relevance today. Curated by Marci Reaven, vice president of history exhibitions, and Lily Wong, assistant curator.

Releasing Words: The Cut Paper Art of Deborah Ugoretz Opening Reception - Museum at Eldridge Street
Through March 31, 2019 - New York

Celebrate the opening of the Museum's newest exhibition, featuring intricate cut-paper art by Deborah Ugoretz. This exhibition will present a retrospective of the artist's work in cut paper, ranging from traditional ketubot (elaborately decorated marriage contracts), pieces inspired by Biblical texts and prayer to more recent work that considers the traditional as a starting point to explores themes and concepts in exciting and very contemporary ways. For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here? - International Center of Photography (Museum)
Through April 28, 2019 - New York

In the wake of the 2018 midterm elections, ICP’s new exhibition "For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here?" explores the role of art and visual representation in American civic life through the work of the For Freedoms collective. The exhibition features work from their 50 State Initiative—composed of a network of over 300 artists and 200 institutional partners—which featured concurrent exhibitions, art installations, and public programs as well as a nationwide artist-designed billboard campaign in all 50 states including DC and Puerto Rico, in the lead up to the midterm elections. Also central to the 50 State Initiative is the collective’s series of photographs that re-envision American artist Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms paintings—depicting freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear, as articulated by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union address—which will be on the view for the first time. For Freedoms’ stylized scenes of the everyday reference Rockwell’s iconic style while bringing new, more inclusive representations of the country to the discussion of our core values. Members of For Freedoms will be in residence at the ICP Museu... (read more)

Mean Girl Broadway Musical If you didn’t see Mean Girl back in the 2000s, then you probably didn’t have that great of a childhood. Most people might call it a chick flick, but in our opinion, it is one of the greatest teen movies of our generation. The people were in awe over our little mathematician. Oh, and it’s not just our opinion, the movie was showered with more awards then we can count. But, the story just keeps getting better. After her incredible movie, Tina Fey didn’t just stop there. She has far greater and extravagant plans for the Mean Girls Franchise. You'd like to know if Tina Fey can write a musical. The oh-so-not-surprising answer is... yes! – Peter Marks, The Washington Post We sometimes feel that our childhood is coming to life with musicals. First, it was Bring it On, then Heathers with several others in development. But, the musical for Mean Girls is already here. The Mean Girls Musical is a masterpiece from the great Fey. Frozen - Broadway Musical - St. James Theatre
Through June 05, 2019 - New York

The spectacular Disney film that captivated audiences around the world has finally made it to Broadway! Following the success of the 2013 animated movie, Frozen the Musical expands on the story of two sisters, giving more time to the characters we’ve come to love. With a book by Jennifer Lee, and music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the show has kept many members of the creative team from the film, ensuring everything on stage is faithful to the original story. Instead of being a direct copy of the film, what Frozen the Musical does is transform these animated characters into something real and tangible. It really takes the time to dig deep into the characters’ motivations, allowing their relationships to develop further. Delving deeper into Elsa and Anna’s past, the extra time given to the young sisters makes their love for each other clear from the start. Young Elsa, portrayed by Brooklyn Nelson and Ayla Schwartz, is the perfect tragic heroine. Her reaction to hurting her sister, and her fear of hurting anyone else, tugs at the heartstrings of every audience member. Both actors convey the role of big sister brilliantly, tapping into the respons... (read more)

“Move Your Curves” Workshop at Ailey Extension - The Joan Weill Center for Dance
Through June 15, 2019 - New York

Ailey Extension is teaming up with Pretty BIG Movement to bring you a “Move Your Curves" workshop. Pretty BIG Movement, based in New York City, is a full-figured dance company specializing in various dance genres such as hip-hop, jazz, ethnic, and more. Founder and CEO Akira Armstrong realized there wasn't a platform for women with voluptuous curves in mainstream media, and so she created one. While auditioning for Full Figured Fashion Week, Akira found that she was surrounded by confident, plus-size women who were beautiful, curvaceous, and shared the same passion in dance. She seized that moment and started Pretty BIG Movement. By 2015, the voluptuous dance troupe performed in Ladies Of Hip-Hop, Carnival (choreographers' ball), Ms. Full Figured USA pageant, Female Hip-Hop Honors award show, Salt N Pepa, Lane Bryant campaigns ("I'm No Angel" and "Plus Is Equal"), Full Beauty commercial, Mz. 007 concert and NBC's America's Got Talent (season 10). Currently, Pretty BIG offers dance workshops in the tri-state area to the plus-size community, creating a No Judgment environment where individuals can feel comfortable dancing.
