Adrienne Unae - Broadway Comedy Club
April 21, 2019 - New York

Just as things start getting a little weird, become the eaves dropping visitors of a pinned-up Nun, Oscar winner, tailor, magician, club owner, and only God knows who else. In this interactive and immersive show, folks come up missing and it is up to everyone to defend themselves by setting up alibis in order to cover their tracks. How'd this malarky of a motley crew come about anyway? Who cares. All you want is to be told you are free to go so you can leave the guilty party behind. But wait! Just because you MIGHT get out doesn't necessarily mean you're innocent. Hmmm. Could you be the saboteur? Could you help solve the heinous crime(s)? Will the entire evening be a mystery? With this fast-paced hilarious one woman show, mayhem is the appetizer, madness the main course and critical thinking is served up a la carte! Ticket sales support Adrienne Unae's mission work in NYC, Ft. Lauderdale, and Kenya. BTW, the ticket price is too low to be refundable. LOL

Through April 28, 2019 - New York

In the wake of the 2018 midterm elections, ICP’s new exhibition "For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here?" explores the role of art and visual representation in American civic life through the work of the For Freedoms collective. The exhibition features work from their 50 State Initiative—composed of a network of over 300 artists and 200 institutional partners—which featured concurrent exhibitions, art installations, and public programs as well as a nationwide artist-designed billboard campaign in all 50 states including DC and Puerto Rico, in the lead up to the midterm elections. Also central to the 50 State Initiative is the collective’s series of photographs that re-envision American artist Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms paintings—depicting freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear, as articulated by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union address—which will be on the view for the first time. For Freedoms’ stylized scenes of the everyday reference Rockwell’s iconic style while bringing new, more inclusive representations of the country to the discussion of our core values. Members of For Freedoms will be in residence at the ICP Museu... (read more)

Agora and Gallery - Agora Gallery
Through May 08, 2019 - NYC

Agora Gallery presents A Rich Profusion of Spring, an exhibition of paintings and sculptures, on view April 18 through May 8, 2019, with an opening reception Thursday, April 18, from 6-8 PM. Spring invigorates. April is conventionally associated birth and new life; and yet, at T.S. Eliot once remarked, “April is the cruelest month.” The 13 artists included in this exhibition all explore the fecundity of their medium (be it a watercolor work, a sculpture, or a painting in oils); but they everywhere encounter limits. These limits call into question the value their chosen craft. In the face of restlessness and doubt, however, these 13 artists dauntlessly capture the energy artists use to realize an artwork into life. The works on view show the human figure as something effaced, concealed, even denatured. In the teeth of this, the elegance of human ingenuity becomes all the more apparent. Glimpses become certitudes; conviction becomes truth. Featuring domestic interiors, craggy landscapes, and urban vistas, the attitude each artist takes in relation to his or her theme is one of disinterested contemplation. Oftentimes, there is no observer suggested by the work—apart from the vie... (read more)

NEW YORK -- New Stage Theatre Company (www.newstagetheatre.org) will bring its signature blend of inventive choreography and striking visual design to a modernist masterpiece of German theater with its production of "Electronic City" (2003) by Falk Richter, translated by Marlene J. Norst, adapted and directed by Ildiko Nemeth. Performances are April 12 to May 10 at The New Stage Performance Space, 36 West 106th Street (basement level). "Electronic City" is the story of Tom and Joy, who seek belonging, connection, and meaning amid lives in which living is squeezed between long-distance travel, the buffeting of instant communication and the commercial pressures of their jobs. Tom, lost and confused, and Joy, paralyzed by the constant demands of her barcode scanning job, collide at an airport gate. The two are so fully, hypnotically, and unhappily controlled by devices, mass media, and the general speed of modern life that, though they seek each other throughout the play, their finding each other on the same small stage is far from guaranteed. The production paints the isolation and alienation of our technology-driven, image-saturated culture with a dynamic mix of projections, ... (read more)

"Ever since I was a child, I can remember sitting in the theater, waiting as the lights went down for the magic to start. From the age of two, my mother would schlep us to see new worlds and experience foreign types of movement, sounds and music. She believed in exposing us to all parts of our imagination, building paths towards new unknowns. Here at the 14the Street Y Theater, we also believe that all children should experience that magic, sit excitedly for unknowns, and meet new characters for their imagination to take into new worlds. We want to create a platform that will enable artists to weave their magic for our kids. That is why we have started incubating and supporting a Theater for Young Audiences series. This year we are launching this series with 5 new plays and events that will shar... (read more)

Mean Girl Broadway Musical If you didn’t see Mean Girl back in the 2000s, then you probably didn’t have that great of a childhood. She has far greater and extravagant plans for the Mean Girls Franchise. You'd like to know if Tina Fey can write a musical. The oh-so-not-surprising answer is... yes! – Peter Marks, The Washington Post We sometimes feel that our childhood is coming to life with musicals. First, it was Bring it On, then Heathers with several others in development. But, the musical for Mean Girls is already here. The Mean Girls Musical is a masterpiece from the great Fey. It’s based on her book and the movie of the same name. The musical was under construction since 2013. Among Others: Photography and the Group - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

Picasso's Le Tricorne - New-York Historical Society
Through December 31, 2020 - Upper West Side

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
