Through September 15, 2019 - Manhattan

"Comrades! I am the bard of Democracy," Walt Whitman announced in a notebook in 1859. Over his 73 years (1819–1892), he essentially made good on that claim. From humble origins in Long Island and Brooklyn, he earned a global audience that never stops growing. On the two hundredth anniversary of his birth he continues to speak to new generations. The exhibition explores Whitman's process of self-invention, from his early years as a journalist, through the early 1850s when Whitman began to write more privately and poetically, to his final years. Whitman not only sounded a "barbaric yawp" over the rooftops of the world, but he also helped his country to reconcile its famous contradictions through his inclusivity and his extraordinary body of work. Several of Whitman's notebooks will be on display, as well as his portraitist's copy of Leaves of Grass (1855) and the famous letter written to Whitman by Ralph Waldo Emerson commending that book. The exhibition will establish Whitman's unblinking witness to the Civil War and display the great poems that he wrote in honor of the martyred president including "O Captain! My Captain!" Also on view are documents from Oscar Wilde, Hart Crane, Fe... (read more)

The Chaos Theory of Now - Theater for the New City
Through September 15, 2019 - New York

In this intelligent and entertaining solo performance, lesbian comedian and science maven Jennifer Joy Pawlitschek uses science’s chaos theory to illuminate our uncertain times. Inspired in part by her own far-right Republican farm family, Jennifer portrays a diversity of wild characters, including a Trump-voting farm wife, a lesbian liberal rural politician, an Evangelical homeschooling mom, and a teen punk Antifa activist. She reveals how America got to this point - and what’s next in our unsettled country. At the edge of chaos lies either total ruin or creative new beginnings. Which side will we end up on? Kids Eat History: The Story of School Lunch - Henry Street Settlement
September 22, 2019 - New York

Calling all foodie families! Don’t miss this super-fun and delicious chance to learn history by eating. At this interactive program, we’ll be exploring the origin of the school lunch program in New York City schools and how it transformed the lives of turn-of-the-20th century Lower East Side kids – at the very place where it all began, the Henry Street Settlement. Today, the idea of feeding kids lunch at school sounds elementary, but in the early 1900s, it was pretty radical. And what seems radical today? Some of the foods on those early school lunch menus – like mashed sweet potatoes in a cone! Picky eaters, prepare, because we’ll be serving up some of those original school lunch meals to give you a true taste of how the era’s ideas about nutrition, poverty, and immigrant culture came together to launch lunch. Recommended for children ages five and up and their adult companions.Presented by the Museum at Eldridge Street and the Henry Street Settlement

Kochin Dessert - PhoBar Chinatown
Through September 22, 2019 -

Kochin is hosting a pop-up at PhoBar Chinatown on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22nd from 11am - 7pm. You may have seen (or tasted) Kochin's "Coffee Bomb" at Smorgasburg (Williamsburg & Park Slope) this season, but the Vietnamese street-food inspired dessert company will be debuting their newly developed coffee & black tea noodles at this 2-day pop-up. The coffee & black tea noodles will be served over shaved ice with ice cream (coffee noodles with chocolate ice cream and black tea noodles with green tea ice cream) and a "dessert egg"' made from coconut milk pudding and white chocolate ganache and coconut sauce on the side to pour over. The founders of Kochin, a fashion entrepreneur and food scientist, develop their desserts through inspiration from traditional Vietnamese flavors, but put a unique spin on the presentation of them. Similar to the "Coffee Bomb", the flavors of the coffee & black tea noodles evoke memories from their childhood spending time eating at Vietnamese street markets after school. A playful dessert that mimics something savory, but is actually a sweet dish, is the way they put their own twist on it.

After a sold-out 2018 run, Freemove Dance returns to 14th Street Y with …it’s time…, a piece in which five dancers are literally racing against the clock, constrained and propelled by the presence of a large digital timer, inexorably counting down towards zero. The work, choreographed by Jenn Freeman – one long, cinematic take in which performers transition through changing ambiances, styles, and energies – is a meditation on the complex human relationship to time and a metaphor for a lifetime. The evocative live drum score composed by Dani Markham (Childish Gambino) serves as the soundtrack.

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 29, 6 to 8 pm, and will be on view through to November 1, 2019. For her first solo exhibition in New York, artist Minerva Cuevas presents a body of video work that makes concise connections between the consequences of dominant economic ideologies and urgent, global ecological and social issues. Gathering eight video installations and projections, Disidencia (Dissent) brings together a range of visual strategies that Cuevas has deployed to engage with such topics as the decay of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, corporate America’s insatiable brand of globalization, and a video cartography of protests and resistance throughout her home city. At a time when divisive politics are on the rise and deregulation and privatization seem almost unavoidable, Cuevas shows us an alternative to such dangers and empowers our own social relations. “Titled after one of Cuevas’s emblematic works, Disidencia serves to establish opposition and active contestation,” explains Gabriel Bogossian, who has co-curated the exhibition alongside Solange Farkas, dire... Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia. Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

THE EMPTY BOX (Gospel Musical Stage Play) - Oberia D. Dempsey Theater
Through December 14, 2019 - New York

The gospel musical stage play THE EMPTY BOX sheds light on the merging of two families with different perceptions, belief systems and levels of faith. Paris was taught to see only what is directly in front of her. Because she comes from a privileged family that gives her everything that she wants, she has not learned the power in prayer or faith. She was comfortable with her life until she met the smart, kind and handsome Bryson Robbins. Bryson’s story is different from Paris’ in that his family could not offer him financial wealth but rather taught him the importance of having a relationship with God. Bryson’s struggles has made him a prayer warrior, a dreamer and allows him to see what others do not. Watch as this couple along with their families try to bridge their different beliefs. It is possible, that the powerful experience of faith which normally binds people together, may actually tear these two families apart.

Verdi: Creating Otello and Falstaff - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 05, 2020 - Manhattan

After Aida in 1871, except for occasional projects, Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), Italy's pre-eminent composer, retired from opera at the age of 58. This, however, did not prevent constant pleas from his publisher, Giulio Ricordi (1840–1912), and his future librettist, Arrigo Boito (1842–1918), for the maestro to return to the operatic stage. Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

Picasso's Le Tricorne - New-York Historical Society
Through December 31, 2020 - Upper West Side

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
