Bill Charlap Trio - Village Vanguard
September 08, 2019 - New York

As a unit, this must be one of the best piano trios ever, and certainly as instantly recognisable as any of its great predecessors. Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (famously unrelated), the total effect is just perfect. As always, Charlap’s playing provides convincing proof that it is still possible to create fresh but pertinent treatments of well-known standard songs.

911 Memorial Concert - The Creative Cultural Center St. Veronica
September 08, 2019 - New York

Schiller Institute NYC Chorus 9-11 Memorial Concert, featuring Johannes Brahms Nänie Op. 82, Franz Schubert Mass in G, J.S. Bach Jesu, Meine Freude, and African-American Spirituals. The Schiller Chorus has performed concerts on 9-11 every year since 2016, when it performed four back-to-back performances of Mozart's Requiem in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and New Jersey. These concerts and the rehearsal process leading into them constitute a living memorial for those who perished on 9-11 and those who have since died as a result of those tragic attacks. It is for us, the living, to commit to creating a world of beauty and peace. The keystone of this year's tribute will be a performance of Johannes Brahm's beautiful choral and orchestral arrangement of the poem by Friedrich Schiller, Nänie. This poem takes up through the lens of ancient Greek mythology the question of the inevitability of death: "Auch das Schöne muß sterben," that even the beautiful must die! This sad occurrence can bring even goddesses to tears. However, their death is not the end when we sing in honor of those dead. Through our songs of lament we give them immortality. They may die, but beauty itself does ... (read more)

"Out of Leftovers" is a new informal performance series at Symphony Space that is prepared to quash several pains at once -- a hunger for live music in the neighborhood, a hunger for a tasty meal, and sheer exhaustion. If you're an Upper West Side family with kids, chances are that your weekends are filled with birthday parties, sports leagues and music recitals. By Sunday afternoon your refrigerator is empty and everyone is wiped. This is our reality, too, and we're going to fix it. On two First Sundays in April and May (April 7 and May 5), we are piloting "Out of Leftovers" at Bar Thalia, the cafe & bar inside Symphony Space, at the corner of 95th and Broadway. The cafe opens at 5pm and we will fill the room with music at 5:30. There is a very tasty menu (go look!) as well as beer, wine and cocktails available. The music is free -- your donations are greatly appreciated -- and seating is available on a first come, first served basis. The series is being curated by Ljova (a.k.a. Lev Zhurbin), the Russian-born composer and performer and long-time Upper West Sider. Ljova has composed music for Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble, the City of London Sinfonia and The Louisville Orche... (read more)

Tootsie - Marquis Theatre
Through September 08, 2019 - New York,

A new musical adaptation of the popular 1982 film arrives on Broadway! It's "far and away the funniest show of the season" (Daily News). It's "the most uproarious new show in years" (The Hollywood Reporter). It's "the best comedy on Broadway" (Forbes). No matter how you say it, Tootsie is unanimously funny! Tony Award® winner Santino Fontana gives "one of the best performances in musical comedy history" (Rolling Stone) in this laugh-out-loud love letter to the theatre, based on the Oscar®-nominated film. Featuring a Tony-winning book by Robert Horn and an outrageously clever score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band's Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), this New York Times Critic's Pick is a "hilarious, thoroughly modern Tootsie" (People Magazine) that's "even funnier than the movie!" (New York Post). "In these turbulent times, when the world seems out of balance, we need a place to let the good times roll," says Rolling Stone, "Tootsie is it." Don't miss the "winner Broadway has been waiting for!" (The Washington Post).

Metaform: The Interactive Photography Exhibit by Paul Richard Thomas - Bryant Park (upper terrace)
September 10, 2019 - New York

Paul Richard Thomas has announced his next exhibition: an innovative virtual gallery display. The interactive exhibit will bring to life a surreal vision of the human body versus the human psyche as visitors enter a human wall comprised of men clad in custom- made outfits created by celebrity designer Francesca Liberatore. Each part of this human wall will feature an oversized photograph harnessed to their back, with the artwork only becoming visible as viewers enter the impromptu gallery. Once visitors step inside, the exhibition reveals itself: a series of images of models and celebrities – Susanne Bartsch, Fatima Siad, Snow Dollkinson – among others, displaying their pure beauty yet exposing chosen parts of their faces or anatomy that Thomas customizes in an unexpected and provocative manner. Thomas takes the viewer on a journey of intense reflection, questioning what we do to ourselves thanks to the highly intrusive transformations to our physical appearance as he incites us to explore the deeper meaning behind them. Thomas's message, illustrated through this exhibition, drives home the point that we all seek to make a statement reflecting the uniqueness of our persona... (read more)

Irish Writers in the American Press, 1882-1964 - Glucksman Ireland House
September 12, 2019 - New York

Irish Writers in the Irish American Press (University of Massachusetts Press, 2018) spans the period from Oscar Wilde’s 1882 American lecture tour to the months following JFK’s assassination and covers the century in which Irish American identity was shaped by immigration, religion, politics, and economic advancement. Through a close engagement with Irish American periodicals, Dr. Stephen Butler offers a more nuanced understanding of the connections between Irish literary studies and Irish American culture during this period. Literary anthologies feature many of Ireland’s most well-known authors, Oscar Wilde, W. B. Yeats, J. M. Synge, George Bernard Shaw, Seán O’Casey, James Joyce, and Brendan Behan among them. Just as Eve Ensler’s play sought to break down the barriers of shame around the word vagina, and the recent Bush Theatre production Hijabi Monologues challenged stereotypes of Muslim women, The Maternity Monologues demystifies the female experience of pregnancy, birth and mothering. Having trained as a journalist, Catherine Higgins-Moore interviewed women about their experiences of pregnancy and childbirth. She built on those transcripts adding fictional scenarios and voices, pairing them with current events to create honest and previously unspoken dialogues. At times darkly funny, sad, angry and isolated the voices in the play are an honest depiction of how these women feel about their changing bodies, finances, relationships and mental and physical health as well as how they are valued from conception onwards. The play offers a uniquely honest look through fresh eyes at a brutal and beautiful timeless theme. ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Catherine... (read more)

September 13, 2019 - New York

There is a symphony of almost undetectable sounds that make up a moment of silence, and Peter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard) is determined to catalog them all. Through his job as a New York City "house tuner," the hyper-methodical Peter works meticulously to diagnose the discordant ambient noises—produced by everything from wind patterns to humming electrical appliances—adversely affecting his clients' moods. When he takes on the particularly difficult case of Ellen (Rashida Jones), a lonely woman plagued by chronic exhaustion, Peter finds that the mysteries of the soul may be even greater than the mysteries of sound. A quietly moving portrait of a harmony-obsessed man learning to embrace the dissonances of human emotion, THE SOUND OF SILENCE invites viewers to hear the world with fresh ears.

Graffiti Warriors: Bama and Pistol, Pioneers of Subway Art - The Village Alliance
Through September 13, 2019 - New York

This is free and open to the public. In the early 1970s, the felt-tipped, penned initials on New York City's subway morphed into multicolored lettering and illustrations sprayed on the trains and tunnels with aerosol paint cans. Inner-city kids from the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn viewed the trains as a rolling canvas showcasing their art for all New Yorkers, rich and poor alike. In so doing, they pioneered an indigenous urban American art form--graffiti, now recognized worldwide as the visual component of hip-hop culture. This exhibition celebrates the past and present art of two graffiti artists--Richard Admiral, Jr. and his buddy Lonnie Heller, aka Bama and Pistol--who helped pioneer subway graffiti before the art form was chronicled by acclaimed photographers Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper in the late '70s.

One of them is a big DFW fan, the other does not know we’re doing this! *Don’t worry, you don’t have to have ever read a book to enjoy this show. Tickets are $12 online or at the door.

Ten concepts are shared which all illuminate personal attributes often forgotten as students grow and study. All of the ten were realized through Mr. Wittmann's own mistakes and shortcomings. His wish is to transparently share these with people who have doubt as to how they should proceed in this wonderful, daunting life as a productive, responsible citizen. The artists, by following their intuition, their passions, their interests, their morals, and their views, create pieces that are intriguing, meaningful, and relatable. Through the dense organic textures, bold colors, sharp marks, dramatic contrasts with light and darkness, all done with various mediums, the artists remind the viewer of the miracle and mystery of life. Although the artists come from all types of backgrounds, they all include an aspect of their respective culture to their pieces, allowing A Splendid Summer Showcase to be a worldly exhibition that unites us all through the power of art. Mean Streets - IFC Center
Through September 14, 2019 - New York

"The definitive New York movie, and one of the few to successfully integrate rock music into the structure of the film: watch Keitel waking to the sound of the Ronettes, or De Niro dancing solo in the street to 'Mickey's Monkey'. MEAN STREETS is also pure Italian-American. Charlie (Keitel), punk on the fringes of 'respectable' organized crime, ponders his adolescent confusions and loyalties. Beneath the swagger, he's embarrassed by his work, his religion, and by women and his friends, particularly Johnny Boy (De Niro), who owes everyone money. Scorsese directs with breathless, head-on energy which infuses the performances, the sharp fast talk, the noise, neon, and violence with a charge of adrenalin. One of the best American films of the decade." –Time Out (London)

Repo Man - IFC Center
Through September 14, 2019 - New York

35mm Print! Staff Pick! Chosen by Jeff who says: "This movie kept me out late a lot of my high-school weekends – in true Midnight Movie mode it didn't get a regular release in my neck of the woods when it came out – relegated instead to showing strictly midnights at the mall. I could just stand up and act out the entire movie on my own from beginning to end – but that wouldn't do the justice to cinematographer Robby Muller's beautifully evocative lensing of LA that this 35mm print showing will do!" "Cox's style is a step beyond camp into a comedy of pure disgust; much of the film is churlishly unpleasant, but there's a core of genuine anger that gives the project an emotional validation lacking in the flabby American comedies of the early 80s." – Chicago Reader

From humble origins in Long Island and Brooklyn, he earned a global audience that never stops growing. On the two hundredth anniversary of his birth he continues to speak to new generations. The exhibition explores Whitman's process of self-invention, from his early years as a journalist, through the early 1850s when Whitman began to write more privately and poetically, to his final years. Whitman not only sounded a "barbaric yawp" over the rooftops of the world, but he also helped his country to reconcile its famous contradictions through his inclusivity and his extraordinary body of work. Several of Whitman's notebooks will be on display, as well as his portraitist's copy of Leaves of Grass (1855) and the famous letter written to Whitman by Ralph Waldo Emerson commending that book. The exhibition will establish Whitman's unblinking witness to the Civil War and display the great poems that he wrote in honor of the martyred president including "O Captain! My Captain!" Also on view are documents from Oscar Wilde, Hart Crane, Fe... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity. The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 29, 6 to 8 pm, and will be on view through to November 1, 2019. Gathering eight video installations and projections, Disidencia (Dissent) brings together a range of visual strategies that Cuevas has deployed to engage with such topics as the decay of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, corporate America’s insatiable brand of globalization, and a video cartography of protests and resistance throughout her home city. At a time when divisive politics are on the rise and deregulation and privatization seem almost unavoidable, Cuevas shows us an alternative to such dangers and empowers our own social relations. “Titled after one of Cuevas’s emblematic works, Disidencia serves to establish opposition and active contestation,” explains Gabriel Bogossian, who has co-curated the exhibition alongside Solange Farkas, dire... Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia. Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

THE EMPTY BOX (Gospel Musical Stage Play) - Oberia D. Dempsey Theater
Through December 14, 2019 - New York

The gospel musical stage play THE EMPTY BOX sheds light on the merging of two families with different perceptions, belief systems and levels of faith. Paris was taught to see only what is directly in front of her. Because she comes from a privileged family that gives her everything that she wants, she has not learned the power in prayer or faith. She was comfortable with her life until she met the smart, kind and handsome Bryson Robbins. Bryson’s story is different from Paris’ in that his family could not offer him financial wealth but rather taught him the importance of having a relationship with God. Bryson’s struggles has made him a prayer warrior, a dreamer and allows him to see what others do not. Watch as this couple along with their families try to bridge their different beliefs. It is possible, that the powerful experience of faith which normally binds people together, may actually tear these two families apart.

This, however, did not prevent constant pleas from his publisher, Giulio Ricordi (1840–1912), and his future librettist, Arrigo Boito (1842–1918), for the maestro to return to the operatic stage. Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
