Americana Monday - Knitting Factory
January 08, 2018 - Brooklyn

Emily Frembgen

Verdigrls, Den-Mate, Sur Back, Rich Girls - Knitting Factory
January 09, 2018 - Brooklyn

Sur Back is the experimental pop brainchild of former Florida ballerina, Caroline Sans. A producer at heart, Caroline marries layered combinations of guitars, vocals, and beats with string and brass instruments—producing a sound that's equal parts whimsical and arresting. In live performance, she rounds out this synthesis with choreographed and improvised movements. Caroline draws the name of her moniker from a natural phenomenon described as "the green ray," first observed by Arctic explorer Sir George Back. The green ray is also said to be a philosophical phenomenon—a moment of epiphany where your thoughts, and the thoughts of those around you are perfectly understood—a struggle that plays a clear role throughout Caroline's tracks. "Sir" was changed to "Sur" to imply the Turkish translation of "sur"—"steer"— in hopes the music will "steer back" its listeners to epiphanies of their ow??n. Her debut EP, Kitsch, was released in July 2016, and her second is slated for this winter.

The Last Revel, The Slocan Ramblers, Matthew Livigni - Knitting Factory
January 10, 2018 - Brooklyn

From the budding music scene of the Upper Midwest comes the cutting edge Front Porch Americana soundscapes of The Last Revel. This powerfully talented trio of multi-instrumentalists from Minneapolis, Minnesota so naturally blends the genres of Folk, Rockabilly, Old Time String-Band and Rock to create a sound that is as equally original as it is timeless. The Last Revel trio utilizes their multi-instrumental abilities to bring the acoustic guitar, upright bass, fiddle, 5-string banjo, harmonica, kick drum and three-part vocal harmonies together to consistently deliver "Bombastic live performances," as well as delicate and haunting folk ballads. With their second, self titled, album released in May of 2015, The Last Revel further demonstrates their ability to create rich and delicately textured recorded material with a modern "tip of the hat" to the storied history of American folk music.

San Fermin - Brooklyn Bowl
Through January 12, 2018 - Brooklyn

San Fermin's third studio album, 'Belong,' marks a shift in songwriting perspective for bandleader Ellis Ludwig-Leone. "In the past I'd usually write through characters from books or movies, as a way to try to distance myself from what I was writing about," says the Brooklyn-based artist. "As I've become more confident as a songwriter, I decided that I could drop some of the artifice and write something more direct." In bringing a more personal slant to his music, Ludwig-Leone found himself confronting such matters as disconnection, displacement, and -- perhaps most significantly -- everyday anxiety. "Anxiety is something I've dealt with since I was a kid, but on this album I talked about it more explicitly than I ever had before," he points out. Produced by Ludwig-Leone and brought to life by his fellow performers -- lead vocalists Charlene Kaye and Allen Tate, trumpet player John Brandon, saxophonist Stephen Chen, violinist Rebekah Durham, drummer Michael Hanf, and guitarists Tyler McDiarmid and Aki Ishiguro -- 'Belong' unfolds in warm, intoxicating textures that both contrast and intensify that sense of unrest. The album's hypnotic sound is embodied in "No Promises," a shimme... (read more)

Prototype: Secrets Us Premiere - National Sawdust
Through January 14, 2018 - Brooklyn

In Secrets, the soprano Claron McFadden and the Massot-Florizoone-Horbaczewski jazz trio source hundreds of anonymous testimonies from the general public and audience members to craft a personal and intense experience. A musical and visual mosaic in which Claron McFadden, singing, whispering and laughing, merges sorrowful, mischievous and cynical passages into one another. Secrets poetically reveals how hidden thoughts link us all together. Claron McFadden and the trio give each secret its own rhythm and musicality: melancholy, restrained, heart-rending or playful. Each individual secret has a universal dimension. The trio has for years been exploring the boundaries between chamber music, jazz and melancholically tinged tapestries of sound, eschewing neither experiment nor improvisation. In their collaboration with Claron McFadden, their delight in playing creates sparks on stage.
