This music legend is the originator of the New York Latin Soul style that paralleled Latin Boogaloo and anticipated disco. His musical experience began with street corner Doo Wop in the 1950s and came to include one of the first rap records to hit the charts, 1979's "Rap-O, Clap-O". In between these milestones, he recorded classic albums like St. Latin's Day Massacre, a perennial favorite in the salsa market.

Los Campesinos! - Brooklyn Bowl
July 09, 2019 - Brooklyn

Sometimes it feels like fear of the future will last forever. Managing this feeling is tricky, because we love the immediate novelty of change but despise the nowhere space of its gradual consequences. Ten years ago, we were too young to be adults and now, we are too old to act like teenagers. Time has passed, but still we remain in a middle. Has persisting only brought us more monotony in the end? We were beautiful – are we doomed? In February 2008, Los Campesinos! put out their first album, Hold On Now, Youngster… The record was an efficient creative statement; a debut that quickly brought them critical success, a 'hit' single, and a reputation as the most fiercely enthusiastic band in indie pop. Everyone had them all figured out for a solid eight months, until a second record, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, was released that October. Those ten tracks of energetic desperation were far more bombastic and far less wholesome than anything on Heavenly or K Records, and established the group not as the latest in a lineage, but rather as a catalyst for an entirely new kind of musical exuberance. Going forward from their breakout year, neither the press nor the record store snobs kn... (read more)

Sweet Crude + Shamarr Allen - Brooklyn Bowl
July 10, 2019 - Brooklyn

"Sweet Crude is an extremely exciting new group with haunting and mesmerizing vocals sung in Louisiana French and English." – PopMatters "When most think of New Orleans, what usually comes to mind immediately are wild Mardi Gras celebrations, great jazz, and Cafe Du Monde's famed beignets. Hailing from the Louisiana city, rising indie pop six-piece Sweet Crude know there's so much more to be found and appreciated: a richness in culture and history, which they've deftly woven into the foundation of their work." – Consequence of Sound Over the past few years, Sweet Crude has managed to take the music and language of Louisiana and produce a completely fresh music that thrusts century-old traditions into the present. The six-piece band consistently delivers exciting shows featuring enough drums for a small marching band, exuberantly bellowed harmonies, and lyrics that jump from English to Louisiana French in a single verse. Boasting surnames like Marceaux and Chachere, Sweet Crude seeks to reconnect with their lineage in a way that draws on their own modern influences, while nodding to the music and language of their ancestors. The members of Sweet Crude all hail from South Louis... (read more)

The Messthetics - Union Pool
July 12, 2019 - Brooklyn

21 and over LULU LEWIS The last time drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were in a band together, they were the rhythmic architects for Fugazi, an organization whose decade and a half of disciplined progressivism provided a necessary bridge between the zenith of late-punk expression and everything alternative in rock that followed. In 2016, the two were enlisted by guitarist Anthony Pirog in a conspiracy to subvert and reimagine the power trio, bringing fully into the 21st Century a form that may have reached near perfection with Hendrix's Band of Gypsys on the very first day of the 1970s.

21 and over AL-053 Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt LP "Brace Up!" Brace Up! is the first ever studio release from the duo of Chris Corsano (drums) and Bill Orcutt (guitar). Recorded in Brussels at Les Ateliers Claus by Christophe Albertijn on March 19th and 20th, 2018. Stage dive photograph by Jason Penner "Over the past six years or so, drummer Chris Corsano has proven to be one of Bill Orcutt's most reliably flexible collusionists. Regardless of whether Bill is cluster-busting electric guitar strings, weaseling around with cracked electronics, or playing relatively spacious free-rock, Corsano is able to provide the proper base for his aural sculpting. A lot of Orcutt's instrumental work has traditionally felt hermetic even though he's exploring caverns of explosive ecstasy.
