Queens, NY-based electronic producer and performer.

Early Show The Seb Isaac Band, The Nectars - Mercury Lounge
January 07, 2018 - New York

The Seb Isaac Band The Nectars Conceived in the shadow of New York City late 2016, some 20 miles west of its lavish neon clutches, The Nectars climbed out of the tangled New Jersey suburbs and into the local alternative rock consciousness. Still under a year since inception, they've already mercilessly plundered local studios for free recording time, creating over 10 tracks, shooting three videos and turning down early record label interest. They do things their way. The Nectars' punk inflamed guitars, inventive harmonic motion, trashy beats and raw vocals lay a foundation influenced by EDM, funk and scorching live performance. Their approach harks back to the punk / pop scene New York circa 1975 but brings a modernity of sound and approach that only new millennial techno creatives can lay claim to.

Retroglyphs, First Blush, The 65's - Mercury Lounge
January 08, 2018 - New York

Retroglyphs RETROGLYPHS is the 80s-inspired retro-wave project started by Frank Cervantes and Josh Dowiak. Inspired by some of their favorite 80s groups such as Tears for Fears and New Order, the duo is committed to making new original material that honors their own creativity while paying homage to their influences. In concert, the group plays as a full band with the help of multi-instrumentalists Joshua Holland and Matthew Wood. First Blush First Blush makes genre-bending synthpop, combining ethereal electronic elements with strong, catchy melodies and riffs. First Blush's influences include M83, The Who, and The Flaming Lips, among others. The 65's The 65's formed in 2009 in Rutherford NJ when Joe Pugsley and John Steele, both veterans of the NY/NJ music scene who were playing at the time in the since defunct alt-country band The Dark Brothers, recruited some friends to record a collection of songs that Joe had wanted to release for some time, but had never been properly recorded. The songs were a mix of aggressive punk influenced pop songs, acoustic tracks, and mid-tempo straightforward rock n roll. After spending most of 2009 and 2010 recording and performing... (read more)

January 08, 2018 - New York

Tickets go on sale to VinoFiles at 3pm on 11/7 and the general public at 3pm on 11/9. Upon the release of Mad Mad World 25 it looks like Tom Cochrane's life will continue to be a Highway. He says "the road was and is like going to school." An iconic career which started in the pubs, rough neck bars and coffeehouses of the roads and highways of first Ontario and then the rest Canada and then the world has spanned over 4 decades and is characterized by creative, adventurousness and musical and personal integrity. Commenting on some of the jobs he had early on in his life, which include cab driving, working at CIL Paints, on the loading dock at Sears and Canada Packers, crewing out on a sail boat (not a cruise ship). "Those gigs are character builders, you pay some bills along the way with them but it's real life also that you learn from and draw songs from." A few years into his tenure with Red Rider they graduated to larger venues, halls, arenas and festivals stages. "The early days never leave you though, they get etched on your soul like a tattoo." Within and without Red Rider, Tom has released 17 albums. Having helped shape the musical landscape for future generations of Ca... (read more)

Valley Lodge - Mercury Lounge
January 09, 2018 - New York

Valley Lodge is the best rock band basically. You might know them from their wildly popular song "Go," which serves as the theme song to HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." Anyway, the band is comprised of singer and guitar player Dave Hill (the internationally renown comedian and writer who has also been a member of Cobra Verde, Sons of Elvis, Walter Schreifels Band, Diamondsnake, and some others too), drummer Rob Pfeiffer (Sense Field), guitar player and singer Phil Costello (Tragedy, Satanicide, Diamondsnake), and bass player man Eddie Eyeball (2 Skinnee J's, Gordon Gano, and more!) Guitar player and founding member John Kimbrough (Walt Mink, Teen Judge, Tenacious D) provides additional rock heat and spiritual guidance via his Los Angeles bunker. They sound kind of like Cheap Trick, T. Rex, Big Star, Raspberries, Thin Lizzy, Matthew Sweet, Slade, the Kinks, and probably a bunch of other stuff too. It's power pop meets pop rock meets your best friend's parents going out of town when you are sixteen and think that they won't notice if you threw a pool party. Oh, and it's 1978 and you are hooked on glue.

Lee Bones & the Best Half/Brother - Mercury Lounge
January 09, 2018 - New York

Lee Bones and the Best play wild eyed cosmic music--swirling organ and razor melodies with the swing of the country behind it "Lee Bones sings with heart, and the Best play tastefully loud." Half/Brother is the band assembled to perform the music of singer-songwriter Adam Kryzan. After a move to New York in 2015, Kryzan found himself looking back to his childhood, where he spent summers on a family farm in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Influenced by these memories, Half/Brother began writing and recording for what would eventually become their debut release: On A Mountain. Somewhere between country, folk, and Rock'n'Roll, Half/Brother is cosmic music for everyone.

With characteristic care, Yarrow places the success he's had within a greater context, seeing his accomplishments as part of a tradition, to be credited and carried on. "When I was in high school," he recalls, "I heard The Weavers' concert at Carnegie Hall where they sang songs such as 'If I Had a Hammer,' and 'Wasn't That a Time.' It was inspiring, and it showed me the extraordinary effect that music of conscience can have." That lesson launched Peter on a lifelong path that is now, perhaps, in its most vital pha... Ceramic Animal - Mercury Lounge
January 10, 2018 - New York

Four good boys in their fresh-pressed Sunday best. That's how many a wholesome mom have described Ceramic Animal, though if the true story of Ceramic Animal was a tall, safety-first cyclist, that description would only be touching the helmet. You see, suits aren't the only things the CA boys press--their first album, The Cart, was pressed and released on vinyl in early 2017. Ceramic Animal wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced The Cart in-house at Daddy's Basement Studios. The CD release came later in 2017, and both are available at the Ceramic Animal web store.

The Washington Squares - City Winery
January 10, 2018 - New York

The Washington Squares were a deliberate throwback to the days of earnest, politically oriented folk groups like Peter, Paul & Mary, even though they formed 20 years after the peak of the folk boom. The New York City based trio, comprising Lauren Agnelli, Tom Goodkind, and Bruce Paskow, dressed in matching outfits reminiscent of the days of the beat poets, including striped shirts, black berets, and sunglasses, with Goodkind and Paskow affecting goatees. They resurrected old folk songs and wrote new ones in the same vibrant style, harmonizing on stirring anthems of social consciousness. But because they appeared in the Reagan-dominated early '80s, when there was no contemporary political movement within popular music to speak of, because they adopted a retro style, and because they laced their performances with humor, it was sometimes hard to tell how seriously to take them. The answer was that they were serious, albeit in a post-modern, ironic way. The group was the brainchild of Goodkind, a former New York University student who, in the early '80s, was booking new wave acts in the Peppermint Lounge club in New York City and performing with his own rock group, U.S. Ape. Goodkin... (read more)

The Suitcase Junket - Mercury Lounge
January 11, 2018 - New York

The Suitcase Junket is Matt Lorenz: artist, tinkerer, swamp yankee, one-man band. His is the road-worn voice rising over the grind of a tube-amped dumpster guitar, with wild double pitches of throat singing. From The Suitcase Junket's penchant for thrift and ingenuity comes this full-length album -- his debut at Signature Sounds -- of original rock anthems, mountain ballads, blues manifestos and dance-hall festivity, played on instruments built of broken bottles, twisted forks, dried bones, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, a toy keyboard, and an overhead compartment's worth of luggage. Kate Lorenz has been singing ever since she learned to talk. An avid lover of classic rock and motown, she started off by singing what she heard on mix tapes and in her parents' vinyl collection and cut her teeth on the blues while studying abroad playing with a pub band in Ireland.

The Nude Party Insecure Men, Zzzwalk - Mercury Lounge
January 11, 2018 - New York

The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable… until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, fe... (read more)

NYC WINTER JAZZFEST PRESENTS LEAN ON ME: JOSÉ JAMES CELEBRATES BILL WITHERS WITH MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND, NO BS! BRASS BAND & KNOWER - Le Poisson Rouge

José James official site | José James on Facebook | José James on Twitter | José James on Instagram | José James on YouTube Celebrating the eightieth birth year of the legendary R&B singer songwriter, Blue Note recording artist José James presents "Lean On Me: José James celebrates Bill Withers." Vetted personally by Mr. Withers himself, the show is an exploration of the deep musical catalogue that touched millions of hearts and united communities worldwide. Featuring Withers' top ten hits as well as his soul ballads and rare grooves, James brings both a deep musical appreciation and a contemporary approach to songs such as "Ain't No Sunshine," "Hope She'll Be Happier," and "Just the Two of Us." Fittingly, James has assembled a truly all star cast of musicians: Nate Smith on drums, Ben Williams on bass, Sullivan Fortner on keys and Brad Allen Williams on guitar. José James on the project: We've lost a lot of phenomenal musicians over the last few years. David Bowie, Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen, Prince. That combined with the insanity of our current world events made me want to focus on our living genius and positive energy as a people. I've been drawn to Bill Withers' music f... (read more)

Anderson East - Bowery Ballroom
January 11, 2018 - New York

Anderson East is the humble type -- the sort of man who chalks up his success to loads of good fortune. But the singer-songwriter has earned his accolades: one of music's most compelling young artists, East is an unflinching and inimitable talent. Best exemplified on his breakout 2015 debut album, Delilah, the Alabama-native wields an unwavering and potent, ever-husky voice. And as seen on standout tracks including "Satisfy Me" and "Devil In Me," he's able to effortlessly spin tales of tumult and triumph in equal measure. That's of course to say nothing of the brute force with which the man performs — fiery and forceful, as much a wily preacher as a patient poet, East has become one of music's must-see live act. Having recently completed a forthcoming new album with producer Dave Cobb at Nashville's famed RCA Studio A, and preparing to release its first single later this summer, East is hitting the road this summer with Chris Stapleton on the singer's "All-American Road Show." What NPR Music called a " …eclectic, fully formed debut album," Delilah was East's launching pad. But he's hardly slowed down since: over the previous two years, the gritty-blues and-soul-toasting singer ... (read more)

Joshua Redman Quartet with Goldberg, Grenadier & Hutchinson - Blue Note
Through January 14, 2018 - New York

One of the most esteemed and charismatic artists of his generation, the ceaselessly innovative saxophonist Joshua Redman "is unparalleled among horn players today" (JazzTimes). From McCoy Tyner to Brad Mehldau, The Bad Plus, and Brooklyn Rider, Redman has collaborated with a diverse and prestigious list of musicians in the course of his career, all the while emerging as a modern jazz icon in his own right. Critics and fans alike are blown away by Redman's passionate live performances and acclaimed recordings. Redman's genius truly shines as a composer, performer, and bandleader when joined by his longtime collaborators, Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, and Gregory Hutchinson in The Joshua Redman Quartet. This band's music can be challenging, provocative, and forward-looking, but also hard-swinging, melodic, and soulful, with a strong link to the jazz idioms of the 1950s and 1960s. The musicians demand serious energy and engagement of themselves and their listeners, and create music with a joyous and celebratory spirit.
