Adam Ezra Group at The Loft - City Winery
July 14, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $20 Day of Show It's difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin' essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community. Community is epitomized by a belief that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world. For their most recent release, Hurricane Wind (2017), the AEG fanbase turned the full power of its collective hurricane wind outward, and shared the music for free with over 5000 people over the course of two weeks. Such a groundswell of activity wouldn't have been possible even a few years ago; "Hurricane Wind," to AEG, represents both a celebration and reaffirmation of how remarkably that community has grown. A tireless touring outfit, the Adam Ezra Group (AEG) is constantly on the road, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. They are creating a powerful, inclusive community around AEG shows that is beginning to be compared to a social-movement as much as a traditional ... (read more)

July 14, 2019 - New York

18+ Heart Bones is a collaboration between Sean Tillmann (aka Har Mar Superstar) and Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog/ Sweet Spirit). The two became friends while touring together in 2016. They recognized a kindred quality of over-the-top showmanship, and their new project became inevitable. Throughout 2018 the duo have been alternating visits to each other's hometowns of Minneapolis and Austin to co-write original material. Inspired by their favorite classic duos such as Nancy Sinatra/ Lee Hazelwood, Serge Gainsbourg/ Jane Birkin, Sonny & Cher, and Sam & Dave, their influences have spanned everything from doo wop, classic duets, musical theater, electro dance, and melancholy pop.

Juwan Crawley at The Loft - City Winery
July 15, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $25 Day of Show Juwan Crawley is a singer, actor and writer who hails from Connecticut. In 2016, he moved to New York City to pursue his career as an artist. Born in 1994, this double Scorpio with a Gemini Moon grew up in a religious family; and the Gospel Churches he attended had a huge influence on his life. It also had a great impact on his music. His cool Aunts and Godmother introduced him to Old School R&B and Jazz as well as poetry. At the age of 9, Juwan sang on his grandmother's gospel album which prompted his mother to provide him with voice lessons; exposing him to the world of classical music and musical theater. Realizing at an early age that he was gay, growing up in a religious environment was never easy; but it proved to be the soil in which his soul would blossom. As a black man living in pre-Obama and post-Obama America, Juwan has been presented with a host of realities, both amazing and horrifying. It is here, in the joy and the pain of self-discovery, where his music began. Now finding his muses, they bring him inspiration. Still in his early twenties, Juwan has already appeared on Broadway and Off in starring roles and he has co-starred on the N... (read more)

James Carter - Blue Note
July 16, 2019 - New York

"You have to be totally comfortable wherever," Carter says. "I feel that music equals life, that's the way my teacher always taught me. You just can't go through life and experience it fully with a set of blinders on. I think there's tremendous beauty in a cross-pollination of music and influences." In many ways, weaving together divergent impulses is at the heart of Carter's music. Like the late tenor sax titan Ben Webster, he's given to furious, high-velocity solos, but is just as likely to wax sentimental, using his big, bruising tone to tenderly caress a comely melody. In 2000, he released two albums simultaneously that amounted to an anti-manifesto, a proclamation that everything is fair game.

July 18, 2019 - New York

We couldn't agree more, and now the Jazz Standard is proud to present this gifted drummer's latest project, Life Cycles. Along with such longtime members of the Brian Blade Fellowship as pianist Jon Cowherd and saxophonist Myron Walden, the new aggregation includes vocalist/vibraphonist Monte Croft; he first recorded as a leader circa 1989 (two albums on Columbia) and went on to work with the groups of Branford Marsalis and James Spaulding, in addition to his own outfits. As for Shreveport, Louisiana native Brian Blade, from 1988 through 1993 he studied and played with many of the New Orleans masters, including Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Germaine Bazzle, and Alvin "Red" Tyler. A member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet since 2000, Brian Blade also has worked with Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, and Bob Dylan. "[His] rich tapestry of cymbal variations, swelling snare–rolls and asymmetrical accents, coupled with an unfaltering heartbeat of a pulse, marks out an unusually emotional drummer."

As the band knocked off milestone after milestone on the road, their sound, their lineup, and even their name all underwent dramatic metamorphoses. Challenging and thrilling all at once, those changes have finally culminated in the band's dazzling new album, a collection that showcases both their remarkable growth and their adventurous blend of folk, R&B, jazz, gospel, and rock and roll. Recorded primarily over six days at the Clubhouse studio in Rhinebeck, NY, 'Healing' is Upstate's first release with new member Allison Olender, their first with four contributing songwriters, and their first since shortening their name from Upstate Rubdown. It's also their first project to be produced by Wood Brothers percussionist Jano Rix, who helped the group embrace their transformation and lean in to their unique lineup without sacrificing any of the gorgeous harmonies, eclectic arrangements, and unforgettable performances that have defined the band since their earliest days. Y La Bamba - Le Poisson Rouge
July 18, 2019 - New York

18+ Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza's inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band's affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR's Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza's artistic voice like never before. "Soy como soy," Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba's most unbridled offering yet.

Myron Walden is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, lauded for the rich earnestness of his sound and clarity of tone and his distinctly impassioned stage presence. Myron, who first specialized on the alto saxophone and the rarely heard bass clarinet, has added the tenor saxophone to his musical arsenal. He is a leader of an expanding number of musical projects, reflecting the varied aspects of a growing musical identity. He is an in-demand sideman, a founding member of Brian Blade's Fellowship Band and a regular band member of the ensembles of such jazz legends as the late Ray Barretto and Freddie Hubbard. He is a prodigious composer working in a wide variety of styles and moods (his oft-recorded "Like a Flower Seeking the Sun" is but one example of an inventive spirit whose melodies have been recorded by the likes of Ravi Coltrane, Antoine Roney, Winard Harper, Vincent Herring, Carl Allen and Ray Barretto.) Yet if one aspect of Walden's kaleidoscopic musical identity could define him, it would be a driving, restless spirit – one that drives him to widen his experience, to dig deeper into himself, to challenge himself to find that certain truth that lies at the heart of any musical e... A Christian Mcbride Situation - Blue Note
Through July 22, 2019 - New York

Six-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride's path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade's worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians. He was finding his voice, and others were learning to listen for it.
