David Ramirez Plays His Entire Catalog - 3 Nights! - Night 3: FABLES + We're Not Going Anywhere at The Loft - 6/9 - City Winery
June 09, 2019 - 2nd floor New York

We're Not Going Anywhere: At a historical moment of immense political, social, and ecological uncertainty, those four simple words comprise both a promise and a protest, a comforting reassurance of inclusion as well as a hearty cry of defiance. It's a statement that offers no small sense of hope, in that sense matching the music contained on the album. On these vividly imagined and passionately performed songs David Ramirez takes in the world from his unique perspective: "Being half white and half Mexican has made this current political climate especially interesting. So many cultures in this country are being viewed as un-American and it breaks my heart. My family have raised children here, created successful businesses here, and are proud to be a part of this country. Most of what I've seen as of late is misplaced fear. I wanted to write about that fear and how, instead of benefiting us, it sends us spiraling out control." The album that bears that title marks a departure for Ramirez, who builds on the rootsy sound of his early albums to create something new, something bold, something anchored in the here and now. Scouting out unexplored music territory, these songs bounce arou... (read more)

City Winery 10th Anniversary Commerative Merch On Sale: SHOP NOW The best singer-songwriters serve the song. The songwriter's songwriter, James Maddock, who has earned the respect of masterful writers such as Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nile, has built his acclaimed legacy on humbly honoring purity of expression. Many albums in his beloved catalog are elegantly spare, conveying his songs and sentiments in the most direct possible way. But for his latest album, The Green, the songs guided him into recording the most eclectic, exhilaratingly soulful, and imaginatively produced album in his career. "This is my best album. It's an upbeat record with really strong songs and a lot of surprises," the British transplant reveals. "It all happened really naturally. I just listened to where the songs where going and allowed myself the time to give each one a proper sonic home." Since 1999, James Maddock's boldly vulnerable songwriting, honeyed rasp, and distinct folk and Americana aesthetic have garnered acclaim from icons, peers, and tastemaking outlets like NPR, American Songwriter, Relix Magazine, and CMT Edge. Relix notes: "James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in, craggy voice th... (read more)

Matt Andersen w/ Erin Costelo at The Loft - 6/12 - City Winery
June 12, 2019 - 2nd floor New York

Matt Andersen Unbridled joy springs eternal from Halfway Home by Morning. Recorded live off the floor in Nashville, Tennessee, celebrated songwriter Matt Andersen's tenth album collects all the essential elements for a down-home ramble and shoots them through with enough electrifying energy to drive the rock 'n' roll faithful to simmer, shimmy, and shake. Over its lucky 13 tracks, he explores every facet of his sound—sweat-soaked soul, incendiary rhythm and blues, heartbroken folk, and gritty Americana—and binds them together with palpable heart, as the band leaves everything they've got on the sweet old hardwood of the Southern Ground studio, in the same spot that legends like Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, and Jerry Lee Lewis turned up the volume 'til it couldn't go up anymore. Along with the infiltrating buzz of Music City putting its stamp on the record, the studio itself became like a second home for Matt and the band. He and bassist Mike Farrington would routinely kick back with a drink and just listen to the horn section reminisce about the players they'd shared the stage with, and the kitchen took on its typical all-important role as war room, the spot where meals brought th... Lucette w/ Jean Rohe at The Loft - City Winery
June 14, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $18 Day of Show On her sophomore album Deluxe Hotel Room, indie-pop artist Lucette turns her title phrase into a metaphor for experiences both highly specific and widely familiar: fleeting romance, emotional displacement, isolation, the gulf between the presumed glamour of the artist's life and the reality of getting by. Produced by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Sturgill Simpson at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville, Deluxe Hotel Room unfolds in endlessly contrasting layers of feeling. "A lot of joy and a lot of pain has happened for me in hotel rooms," says the Canadian artist otherwise known as Lauren Gillis. "I've stayed in hotel rooms I'd never be able to afford myself and, unfortunately, I've been put in extremely uncomfortable situations in hotel rooms. Also, hearing about a lot of the pain women in the entertainment industry have been through in hotel rooms urged me to write the title track to this album." In keeping with a refusal to self-restrain, Lucette assembled a purposely iconoclastic sonic palette for the album. "A lot of the songs are very traditional in their roots, but Sturgill and I had this idea of producing them in a more pop-leaning wa... (read more)

Live at the Fillmore, the Definitive Tribute to the Allman Brothers Band Recreates 'the Show'. the Closing of Fillmore East! at the Loft - City Winery
June 15, 2019 - New York

A FEW WORDS FROM LOU MARESCA, LIVE AT THE FILLMORE'S FOUNDER: The original Allman Brothers Band performed regularly at New York's Fillmore East Auditorium run by legendary promoter Bill Graham and often referred to as the 'church of rock and roll.' The Allman Brothers Band played often enough at Fillmore East to be called 'Bill Graham's house band.' It was here and at other New York metropolitan area venues like Passaic New Jersey's Central and Capital Theaters, New York's Central Park's Schaefer Summer Concert Series where I and other members of LIVE AT THE FILLMORE first heard the Allman Brothers Band perform beginning in 1970. On June 26, 1971 I was at Fillmore East for the Saturday night late show, the last public concert at Fillmore East, the one the ABB band calls 'THE SHOW,' the one they feel is the greatest performance they ever gave. I've never heard them or any other band give a better performance before or since. Sadly, the next time I heard the band was a few months later at New York's Academy of Music. It was without its leader, Duane Allman, who had died only weeks before in a motorcycle accident near his home in Macon, Georgia. His guitar was onstage on a stand and ... (read more)
