David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band - Birdland
December 06, 2017 - New York

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Legendary record producer George Avakian describes the band in this way: "There has never been a band quite like this one. Most groups, past and present, stick to one style. Some current groups attempt to recreate early recordings in their entirety. These guys do neither. Inspired by divergent bands of the 1920s and 30s, you'll hear them swing a variety of styles in music by a wide range of composers, always true to the joy and heart of the music." Now in its 17th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

Action Bronson - Terminal 5
December 06, 2017 - New York

A raunchy, cylinder-shaped ginger of Eastern European ancestry might not be the first dude you'd peg for rap stardom, but that's exactly the mantle Action Bronson is on the verge of possessing. Over the last few years, the 28-year old Queens native has become one of hip-hop's most charismatic and colorful new characters, thanks to his wicked sense of humor, a buffet of impressive releases and the rare knack for updating cherished East Coast aesthetics into indisputably modern music. In 2011, The New York Times hailed Bronson as "one of the most promising prospects in New York hip-hop." That formidable potential is now being realized. When Bronson gleefully tossed slabs of meat from Peter Luger's famed steakhouse into a wild-ass crowd at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, the mosh pit of skaters, knuckleheads, rap purists and young women was evidence of his ever-widening appeal. Born Ariyan Arslani, Bronson grew up in Flushing, Queens, the son of an Albanian immigrant father and a Jewish mother from Brooklyn. He was an only child, but the population of the two-bedroom apartment swelled to as many as 13 inhabitants due to cousins, aunts, uncles and refuges from ethnic strife in ... (read more)

Bill Frisell / Thomas Morgan Duo - Jazz Standard
December 07, 2017 - New York

n his New York Times review of Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan's Small Town (5.19.2017), Giovanni Russonello called the former "a giant of improvised music, whose smoldering, tube–amplified guitar sound never loses its air of positivist contemplation." As for bassist Morgan, some 30 years Frisell's junior, "his warm and serious bass tone can assimilate itself into almost any band, becoming the music's sturdy architecture without compromising his own blunt power." In 2005, Bill Frisell's Unspeakable won the GRAMMY Award in the category of Best Contemporary Jazz Album; recorded live in New York, Small Town is his first album for ECM Records as a leader/co–leader since Lookout For Hope in 1988. "It's in the more naked, completely vulnerable environs of the duo—where the need for musical trust is, perhaps, at its most crucial—that the profound chemistry shared by these two thoroughly synchronized players becomes even clearer." Taeko - Birdland
December 07, 2017 - New York

apanese native, TAEKO moved to New York City from Shiga, Japan in the late 90's and quickly garnered the nickname "Songbird" from the NYC jazz elite. With a stunning four octave range, she sings with "deep soulfulness reminiscent of Anita Baker with sophisticated scatting a la Ella" as jazz critics describe. With a never ending stream of musical ideas and a fluid delivery that shows years of dedication in studying her craft, little is left to doubt how TAEKO has built a dedicated fan base in both the U.S. and overseas. Growing up in Japan, she was inspired early on by the traditional Japanese music her father and grandfather sang, and has been singing as long as she can remember. TAEKO 's interest in American music was piqued while still a young child. In her formative musical years she counts traditional jazz, modern American music, and Eastern music among her influences in shaping her contemporary vocal style to this day.
