Billy Childs – Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro - Jazz Standard
July 14, 2019 - New York

All of us at Jazz Standard are delighted to welcome back five–time GRAMMY Award winner Billy Childs, a musician held in the highest esteem for his prodigious skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. Childs began his remarkable career as an apprentice musician with the bands of Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson in the late Seventies and early Eighties. In 1988, he launched his recording career as a leader with Take For Example, This...– the first of his four critically acclaimed albums for Windham Hill Jazz. For this much–anticipated engagement, Billy and band – including the exceptional vocalists Alicia Olatuja and Kate McGarry – will revisit the 2014 Sony Masterworks album Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. In his Rolling Stone review (9.9.2014), Dave DiMartino wrote: "This polished product, the work of jazz pianist Billy Childs, spotlights many of Nyro's best songs via Childs' creative orchestrations and the marvelous guest performers…Highly recommended." Billy Childs' latest album, Rebirth(Mack Avenue), marks "a return to the snaking quickfire hard–bop Childs played in the '70s, albeit infused with all the musics he has visited so intelligently since…It's ultra–s... Mingus Big Band: Celebrating 10 Years at Jazz Standard - Jazz Standard
July 15, 2019 - New York

"His music aimed always at the further extension of the horizons of jazz and sometimes experimented with atonality and with a wide range of dissonant effects. Some elements offer a sharp and piquant contrast, with clearly defined folk music roots and a savage, shouting, blues–derived intensity. Not for complacent ears, Mingus' music is the prototype of a new and vital generation of the 1960s just as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie were of the 1940s." Ryan Keberle & Catharsis - Jazz Standard
July 17, 2019 - New York

Hailed in the Downbeat International Critics Poll as #1 Rising Star trombonist, a player "of vision and composure" (the NY Times), Ryan Keberle has developed a one-of-a-kind voice both on his instrument and as a composer. As one of 21stcentury jazz's most adventurous new voices, Keberle's music integrates his wide–ranging experiences into a highly personal vernacular — immersed in jazz tradition, drawing on world music, rock and other influences, always seeking fresh and original pathways. As a featured soloist with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Keberle collaborated with David Bowie on the latter's 2015 single "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)"; he's performed extensively with the lauded songwriter Sufjan Stevens, with Brazilian superstar Ivan Lins, and with the "Saturday Night Live" house band. Ryan Keberle's flagship ensemble, Catharsis, has released five albums; the politically engaged Find The Common, Shine A Light, was praised by The Nation as "unpretentiously intelligent and profoundly moving."
