Jane Bunnett and Maqueque (Direct From Cuba) - Birdland
March 13, 2018 - New York

Saxophonist Jane Bunnett's "Spirits of Havana," the landmark 1993 album that brought together North American and Cuban musicians in Havana, preceded Buena Vista Social Club by three years. With her all-female sextet, Maqueque, whose self-titled debut recently won a Juno (the Canadian Grammy) for Best Group Jazz Album of the Year, Jane is breaking new ground yet again. The name of the group means "the energy of a young girl's spirit," and with four of its members still in their early twenties, this is a band with energy to spare. That spirit is manifested through propulsive montuno improvisations, call and response numbers and ivory-tickling piano features, as might be expected, but also on a stirring cover of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone." Maqueque (pronounced Mah-Keh-Keh) includes Canadian Jane Bunnet (saxophone) and Cuban musicians Yissy Garcia (drums) Melvis Santa (percussion and vocals) Dánae Olano (piano) Magdelys Savigne (batá drums and congas) Celia Jiménez (bass)

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band - Birdland
March 14, 2018 - New York

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Legendary record producer George Avakian describes the band in this way: "There has never been a band quite like this one. Most groups, past and present, stick to one style. Some current groups attempt to recreate early recordings in their entirety. These guys do neither. Inspired by divergent bands of the 1920s and 30s, you'll hear them swing a variety of styles in music by a wide range of composers, always true to the joy and heart of the music." Now in its 17th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

Cynthia Sayer - Birdland
March 15, 2018 - New York

Award-winning instrumentalist/vocalist/bandleader Cynthia Sayer is acclaimed by musicians, critics, and fans alike as one of the top 4-string jazz banjoists in the world today. Her eclectic, swing-based shows embody the rarely heard range and versatility of the 4-string banjo in the hands of a master, celebrating historic jazz banjo stars, Vaudeville, American Songbook favorites, virtuoso classics, fun anecdotes, and more. Sayer first rose to international prominence as a founding member of Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band, all the while exploring her wider musical interests and playing with jazz, popular & roots artists such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Wynton Marsalis, Andy Statman, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Robinson, Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, Marvin Hamlisch, John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) ), Charlie Giordano (with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band), and many others.

Time Machine/Mashina Vremeni - Back to the USA! - Terminal 5
March 16, 2018 - New York

After their sold-out North-American tour in 2010, Russia's legendary rock-and-roll band the "Time Machine" is finally back to the USA. This iconic group was founded by the songwriter and guitarist, Andrey Makarevich in the late 1960s and joined later by his colleagues and friends, Alexander Kutikov and Valery Efremov, who are still performing with the band. It is recognized as a "patriarch" of Russian rock music and achieved the cult status among several generations in the former Soviet Union. While originally the band drew their inspiration from The Beatles, Mashina Vremeni has developed a unique voice throughout the years, often changing its style, but most of the charm of their songs is in the melody and meaningful lyrics. The group created numerous classic hit songs that became a pop-culture phenomenon for anyone of the Russian descent. Many of their songs have found their way into Soviet movie hits, as well as popular theatrical plays.
