Mingus Big Band: Celebrating 10 Years at Jazz Standard - Jazz Standard
July 08, 2019 - New York

"Mingus packed his music so full of life, so full of the noise of the city, that thirty years in the future someone listening to 'Pithecanthropus Erectus' or 'Hog Calling Blues' or any of those other wild steamrolling things wouldn't be sure whether that wail and scream was a horn on the record or the red-and-white siren of a prowl car shrieking past the window. Just listening to the music would be a way of joining in with it, adding to it." (From But Beautiful: A Book About Jazzby Geoff Dyer)

As a composer, he was well–equipped (being the son of a classical singer/conductor father and violinist/pianist mother) to become the creator of The Ari Hoenig Songbook, containing the lead sheets of all of his compositions and "not just the easy ones." As an educator, Hoenig is on faculty at New York University and the New School for Social Research, and also teaches privately. As a bandleader, he formed the first Ari Hoenig Quartet in 2002; finding an hour or two yet to be filled on his weekly schedule, he also convened the Ari Hoenig Nonet to perform his compositions in arrangements by Noam Wiesenberg; and the Ari Hoenig Trio (with Gilad Hekselman and Orlando le Flemming), a group that has toured extensively in Europe, Japan and Latin America. This Jazz Standard one–nighter will spotlight the music of Conner's Days, the artist's latest Fresh Sounds CD, released May 15. July 09, 2019 - New York

With vocalist Allan Harris, drummer/cajon player Shirazette Tinnin, pianist Arcoiris Sandoval, and bassist Nimrod Speaks. "…the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat King Cole." – The Miami Herald "Although he's best known for his buttery tributes to Nat "King" Cole and Billy Eckstine, [Allan] Harris ranks among the most dexterous singers around, and he proves fully up to the challenge" of "navigating the tricky, rapid-fire, street-smart wordplay of vocalese—an art form [Eddie] Jefferson is widely credited with creating." – JazzTimes The award-winning Allan Harris is a Brooklyn-born, Harlem-raised vocalist, guitarist, and composer with a powerful baritone voice and a huge stylistic range. In his return to Dizzy's Club, he will pay tribute to two geniuses of jazz vocals: vocalese pioneer Eddie Jefferson and crooner Nat "King" Cole. By taking on both of these artists' famous songbooks and vocal approaches, Harris will showcase—and perhaps combine—two very different sides of his immense talent in an impressive and entertaining performance.

Billy Childs – Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro - Jazz Standard
July 11, 2019 - New York

All of us at Jazz Standard are delighted to welcome back five–time GRAMMY Award winner Billy Childs, a musician held in the highest esteem for his prodigious skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. Childs began his remarkable career as an apprentice musician with the bands of Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson in the late Seventies and early Eighties. In 1988, he launched his recording career as a leader with Take For Example, This...– the first of his four critically acclaimed albums for Windham Hill Jazz. For this much–anticipated engagement, Billy and band – including the exceptional vocalists Alicia Olatuja and Kate McGarry – will revisit the 2014 Sony Masterworks album Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. In his Rolling Stone review (9.9.2014), Dave DiMartino wrote: "This polished product, the work of jazz pianist Billy Childs, spotlights many of Nyro's best songs via Childs' creative orchestrations and the marvelous guest performers…Highly recommended." Billy Childs' latest album, Rebirth(Mack Avenue), marks "a return to the snaking quickfire hard–bop Childs played in the '70s, albeit infused with all the musics he has visited so intelligently since…It's ultra–s... THE MESSTHETICS - The Royal Arctic Institute - Monty Hall
July 11, 2019 - Jersey City

THE MESSTHETICS The last time drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were in a band together, they were the rhythmic architects for Fugazi, an organization whose decade and a half of disciplined progressivism provided a necessary bridge between the zenith of late-punk expression and everything alternative in rock that followed. In 2016, the two were enlisted by guitarist Anthony Pirog in a conspiracy to subvert and reimagine the power trio, bringing fully into the 21st Century a form that may have reached near perfection with Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys on the very first day of the 1970s. With a self-titled recording scheduled for release in the Spring of 2018 on Dischord, the Messthetics will widen the reach of a decisive instrumental music that so far, they have only shared with a privileged handful of east coast and southern audiences. Across its eight original compositions and one cover, Anthony guides the sound through complex changes and harmonic densities that might compound, but never confound or muddy its connection with the listener’s body. Recorded by Brendan in their practice space, the group’s debut gives Anthony ample opportunities to swap guitar textures and ... (read more)

Mick Hayes! at The Chadakoin Club - The Chadakoin Club
July 12, 2019 - Jamestown

MUSIC BORN FROM GREAT INFLUENCE! International Recording Artist, Mick Hayes is the combination of "artist and entertainer" that we don't hear much about these days. In the past he's been recognized as a network reality TV star, a successful bandleader and frontman who spent years earning his stripes as the opening act for iconic rock bands such as the Doobie Brothers, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick and Peter Frampton. Mick is a fellow musician and accompanist who has graced the stage with a wide variety of artists from Billy Sheehan to Stevie Wonder. A songwriter who was recognized by the Grammy Nomination Committee in two different categories in 2017. A guitarist who received one-on-one guitar instructions from Steve Vai, who is back to being a student of the game while writing and recording a new album at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. While all of this sounds extravagant or designed to impress you, it's one mans dedication to his artistry that you should really be hearing and take some time to experience it for yourself. This self-proclaimed, full-time musician performs regionally, nationally, internationally and also in his hometown music scene for well over... (read more)

Opera Saratoga - Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Ellen West - World Premiere Music by Ricky Ian Gordon Libretto & Poem by Frank Bidart Commissioned by Opera Saratoga and Beth Morrison Projects. Sung in English with English Supertitles Through the evocative poetry of Pulitzer Prize winner Frank Bidart and the beautiful music of Ricky Ian Gordon, explore the emotional, psychological and physical challenges of a woman struggling with perceptions of her body, her relationship with food, and the world closing in around her. Inspired by one of the earliest cases of existential analysis, Ellen West is a remarkable new opera that brings the audience into the lives of psychiatrist Ludwig Binswanger and his patient, "Ellen West." Throughout her life, Ellen filled journals and wrote poetry. Frank Bidart's poem, which serves as the primary source for the opera's libretto, juxtaposes the clinical observations of Binswanger with fictitious entries of Ellen's writing, which shine light on her deeply personal struggles. This tour-de-force chamber opera stars soprano Jennifer Zetlan in her Opera Saratoga debut as Ellen, alongside baritone Keith Phares as her doctor. The world premiere production is directed by Emma Griffin, also in her Op... (read more)

"Elisabeth Lohninger is a powerful performer and a highly-skilled improviser and composer." - New York Times "Lohninger's ear for melody and intellect for smart lyrics have few peers. Add to this a warmly centered alto voice, well captured here, and a complete package of delight emerges. Soul Garden is less a jazz recording than a vocal music recording. Lohninger uses jazz techniques in music of a much wider appeal. This is music for grown-ups dealing with grown-up things: love, the environment, the Beatles." - C. Michael Bailey,All About Jazz "Lohninger shapes an adventurous but accessible session that ideally showcases her voice. Dark and dense as blackberries yet lustrous as pearls, it is a stunning instrument that deserves smart, sympathetic support." - Christopher Loudon, Jazz Times

July 14, 2019 - Long Island City

Bang on a Can and The Noguchi Museum present the New York-based guitar and percussion duo 75 Dollar Bill, performing their unique blend of sound from Northwest Africa by way of Mississippi and New York No Wave. As 75 Dollar Bill, plywood crate percussionist Rick Brown and guitarist Che Chen make electric, richly patterned music that can shape shift from joyful dance tunes to slowly changing trance minimalism – an uncategorizable hybrid which draws on early electric blues, the modal traditions of West Africa, India, and the Middle East, Sun Ra’s space chords and the minimalist and No Wave histories of their hometown. For this event, the group will present a special set of material conceived with the unique environs of The Noguchi Museum in mind. The performance will take place in The Noguchi Museum’s outdoor sculpture garden. In case of rain, the concert will move to the Museum’s galleries.

Recorded in Brussels at Les Ateliers Claus by Christophe Albertijn on March 19th and 20th, 2018. Stage dive photograph by Jason Penner "Over the past six years or so, drummer Chris Corsano has proven to be one of Bill Orcutt's most reliably flexible collusionists. Regardless of whether Bill is cluster-busting electric guitar strings, weaseling around with cracked electronics, or playing relatively spacious free-rock, Corsano is able to provide the proper base for his aural sculpting. A lot of Orcutt's instrumental work has traditionally felt hermetic even though he's exploring caverns of explosive ecstasy.
