Summer Thunder - Union Pool
June 23, 2019 - Brooklyn

21 and over Indiana native Haley Fohr began her experimental indie folk project Circuit des Yeux in 2007, writing and self-recording disturbing, nightmare-like atonal pieces caked in distortion and tape hiss. Her debut LP, Symphone, was released in a limited edition by De Stijl in 2008, followed in 2009 by the more widely available Sirenum on the same label, as well as a 7" single on Dull Knife Records. 2010 saw the release of Ode to Fidelity, a three-song 7" EP on De Stijl which signaled Fohr's shift to more song-based material, letting her deep, haunting vocals and unsettling lyrics rise to the forefront. Third album Portrait arrived on De Stijl in 2011, sporting a much clearer recording quality, as well as a dirge-like deconstruction of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" recorded live. Fohr graduated college in 2012, and moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Chicago, where she began collaborating and performing with several artists in the city's vast music communities.

Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled "Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie's New York."

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Nikara Warren describes herself as being 'bathed' in music and the arts since birth. As the product of a mixed culture family, Nikara's aesthetic is a direct reaction to the music she grew up with. Her newest project, 'Black Wall Street' is a set of 'feel-good' tracks designed as an ode to Black Excellence to counteract the emotional trauma caused by news of Black people being slain by police. Nikara draws from from music affected by the Black Experiences and brings awareness to the Black Wall Street massacre of 1921, while remaining hopeful about the future and emphasizing the positive effects of diversity in the arts. Political Gangster Trilogy The creator of musical group Black Wall Street brings musicians together to highlight artists who compose songs that respond to the current state of affairs in the world of the artist. Highlighted topics include race, socio-economic class and gender roles. Black Gotham Experience Tour - Club Free Time
June 25, 2019 - New York

Black Gotham Experience was founded in 2010 by artist/historian Kamau Ware in New York City. This project celebrates the impact of the African Diaspora with historic walks, media and signature events. Sarah's Fire is the second of five core stories that make up the Black Gotham Experience. The tale takes place on day two of British New York in 1664 on the southern tip of the island of Manhattan (a place home to both free and enslaved Black people), in the small town known as Land of the Blacks. This walking tour illustrates the peculiar universe of urban slavery in a port city with deep ties to the sugar plantations of the West Indies. A key persona in this story is an enslaved woman named Sarah who is one of 29 people that participate in the first militarized Black rebellion on the island of Manhattan that took place April 6, 1712.

The Stonewall Vessels, Bighorn Sheep, Idiots Of Idealism, & more - Stamps The Bar
June 26, 2019 - Tonawanda

Wednesday, June 26th $8 Cover 18+ (ID Required) - No ID/No Entry he band's performance was one of the most memorable of not only the festival, but perhaps that I've ever witnessed. No, that's not just because I and a whole bunch of other maniacs got to join the band onstage and jump around. That certainly added to how cool that night was, but what hooked me and so many others in the first place is the band's unique sound, which is notoriously hard to pin into a particular genre." - Gerard Longo, Lehigh Valley Underground "The Stonewall Vessels are impossible categorize into one single genre or, really, even a certain set of genres. As musicians they are influenced by a wide variety of styles and even many things outside of a strictly musical realm. "So who are we to just try to fit into one thing," they ask, "when we like so many different kinds of things?" For each member it has always been about coming together, brining all they can to the table, and "let[ing] it come out the way it's meant to be." This effort without a specific goal leads to universality."

Mdou Moctar - Monty Hall
June 26, 2019 - Jersey City

Mdou Moctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home, he’s celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, he’s earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that utterly sets him apart. Mdou Moctar hails from a small village in central Niger in a remote region steeped in religious tradition. Growing up in an area where secular music was all but prohibited, he taught himself to play on a homemade guitar cobbled together out of wood. It was years before he found a “real” guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth. In 2008, Mdou traveled to Nigeria to record his debut album of spacey autotune, drum machine, and synthesizer. The album became a viral hit on the mp3 networks of West Africa, and was later released on the compilation Music from Saharan... (read more)

For Bright New Day bassist/composer the virtuoso musician spearheads a genre-transcendent program that explores a wide range of sound, style, and emotion from the lyrical "Holy Spirit" and uplifting "O My God Elohim" to the urgent funk-rock of "Free the Slaves," (which features an especially cathartic electric fuzz bass solo by the leader). Included in this potent collection of eight originals are two Ornette Coleman/harmolodic-inspired jams, "Netting" and the exhilarating "Bright New Day," plus two thoughtful odes to the elements in "Precious Air" and "Waterfalls."

Kiesza - Rockwood Music Hall 2
June 26, 2019 - New York

This event is 21 and over I decided to strip it all back and revisit my early roots for just five stripped-back shows. My journey in music started on a sailboat, singing people to sleep, before I began passing the hat in a coffee shop, trying to scrape by. This is a side of me that rarely finds its way out anymore, and before I go crazy dropping all this new music (that is finally ready), I first wanted to let a handful of you experience where I came from. And remind myself of where my journey began - what stone I was cut from. I want to feel a small intimate room again, and lock eyes with every single person in the room. And I'm looking forward to seeing both new and familiar faces. I'm going to play a bunch of your favourite songs and preview a bunch of new ones! The shows are small, and seats will be limited.

KIKAGAKU MOYO - Sarah Louise - Monty Hall
June 27, 2019 - Jersey City

“Masana” is a fictional word created by Kikagaku Moyo to express a Utopian feeling; an existence where everything can interact harmoniously and offer inspiration and understanding. Their fourth album Masana Temples radiates this vision, architecting a vibrating world that isn’t confined to the known limits of what came before it. Kikagaku Moyo progressed from early days in Tokyo’s experimental scene to traveling the world with their mind-bending sounds, exploring different facets of psychedelia on each new release and blowing minds with a live show that was just as searching as their records. The shifting dimensions of Masana Temples are informed by various experiences the band had with traveling through life together, ranging from the months spent on tour to making a pilgrimage to Lisbon to record the album with jazz musician Bruno Pernadas. The songs came together in the wake of the band breaking up the communal house most of them had shared in Tokyo, with some members relocating to Amsterdam, and others moving to different parts of Japan. Transitioning from being based in the scene they had roots in to scattering around various locales made for an even more enhanced understan... (read more)

Teatro Nuovo presents Donizetti: Symphony in E Minor & Rossini: Stabat Mater - Church of the Heavenly Rest
June 27, 2019 - New York

ABOUT DONIZETTI’S SYMPHONY IN E MINOR Gaetano Donizetti reached the height of his ambition when he was appointed Kapellmeister to the imperial court of Vienna in 1842. He was ready to meet the German-speaking world on its own terms: his only teacher was a Bavarian (Johann Simon Mayr, whose Medea in Corinto was revived last year by Teatro Nuovo), and he had been composing string quartets all his life. He picked the last of these to expand into a full-scale Romantic symphony for the Viennese public. If he had finished, it would be the only example of such a thing by a leading Italian composer - but fate intervened. Linda di Chamounix needed an overture in a hurry, so Donizetti borrowed the symphony’s first movement, and though he had already orchestrated the second and third, he never returned to complete the finale before his fatal illness struck just a few years later. For Teatro Nuovo, Gabriele Dotto (editorial director for the Complete Works of Puccini and co-director of the corresponding Donizetti series) is preparing a critical edition of the first three movements, while Crutchfield is orchestrating the final movement of the original Quartet. Dotto will be on hand ... (read more)

Juliana Hatfield - Monty Hall
June 28, 2019 - Jersey City

Fast on the heels of April 2018’s acclaimed “Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John” comes Juliana Hatfield’s new self-produced all-originals album “Weird”. Freda Love Smith (Blake Babies, Sunshine Boys) and Todd Philips (Lemonheads, The Juliana Hatfield Three) each played drums on multiple songs while Hatfield played all of the other instruments (and some additional drums). “Weird” is an album about disconnection and discomfort. “I often feel cut-off from other people, from my feelings, from technology, from popular culture,” says Hatfield. “I feel weird, I feel like I’m dreaming my life and that I am going to wake up some day.” While Hatfield’s songs—melodies and lyrics and structures– are meticulously crafted, her guitar parts are loose and sometimes a little unhinged, first-take expressions of this temperamental uneasiness. “Personally, I feel like a malfunctioning machine. There’s a screw or two loose. I want my guitar playing to reflect that.”

Ellen West - World Premiere Music by Ricky Ian Gordon Libretto & Poem by Frank Bidart Commissioned by Opera Saratoga and Beth Morrison Projects. Sung in English with English Supertitles Through the evocative poetry of Pulitzer Prize winner Frank Bidart and the beautiful music of Ricky Ian Gordon, explore the emotional, psychological and physical challenges of a woman struggling with perceptions of her body, her relationship with food, and the world closing in around her. We will discuss the role of fungi in the forest and draw parallels to their support ... (read more)
