Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt: A Site-Specific Opera for Families - American Museum of Natural History

Join Rhoda as she hunts for missing fossils throughout the Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs! This opera by composer John Musto is based on the real-life experiences of Rhoda Knight Kalt and her grandfather Charles R. Knight, the famous naturalist illustrator whose paintings and sculptures are still on display at the Museum today. About the Opera Co-commissioned and co-produced with Lyric Opera of Chicago's Lyric Unlimited and Pittsburgh Opera, Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt is based on the real-life experiences of 8-year-old Rhoda Knight Kalt and her trips to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) with her grandfather Charles R. Knight, the famous naturalist artist who was commissioned to create paintings and sculptures of prehistoric creatures – many still on display at the AMNH today. The opera premieres in the AMNH's Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs in the fall 2017 before traveling to Chicago (Lyric Unlimited) and Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Opera).

When Birdsong left for Supremes the other three members changed the group's name to LaBelle, transforming themselves into futuristic disco-funk divas. Nona Hendryx wrote a number of songs for the band before their breakup in 1976 and she went on to pursue a solo career with her self-titled debut album the next year. Masayo Ishigure began playing the koto and jiuta shamisen at the age of five in Gifu, Japan and has built a multifaceted career that continues to stretch the limits of the koto while maintaining a strong grasp on tradition. In 2005, she was a recording artist on the Grammy-winning soundtrack composed by John Williams for the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, alongside Yitzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma. Her solo album, Grace, was released in 2001. He first picked up the guitar on his eleventh birthday and taught himself to play by watching concert DVDs of Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Bruce Springsteen. Dan's passion for writing music began in high school when he was the lead guitarist for the alternative rock group, Hot Soup, which drew inspiration from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. Dan developed his upbeat, acoustic rock style while attending college on a baseball scholarship. He found time between practices and games to perform at coffee houses and fundraising events. After college, Dan kept his guitar in hand throughout a three-year professional baseball career, which brought him around the United States and Canada.
