Bill Charlap Trio - Village Vanguard
September 08, 2019 - New York

As a unit, this must be one of the best piano trios ever, and certainly as instantly recognisable as any of its great predecessors. Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (famously unrelated), the total effect is just perfect. As always, Charlap’s playing provides convincing proof that it is still possible to create fresh but pertinent treatments of well-known standard songs.

911 Memorial Concert - The Creative Cultural Center St. Veronica
September 08, 2019 - New York

Schiller Institute NYC Chorus 9-11 Memorial Concert, featuring Johannes Brahms Nänie Op. 82, Franz Schubert Mass in G, J.S. Bach Jesu, Meine Freude, and African-American Spirituals. The Schiller Chorus has performed concerts on 9-11 every year since 2016, when it performed four back-to-back performances of Mozart's Requiem in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and New Jersey. These concerts and the rehearsal process leading into them constitute a living memorial for those who perished on 9-11 and those who have since died as a result of those tragic attacks. It is for us, the living, to commit to creating a world of beauty and peace. The keystone of this year's tribute will be a performance of Johannes Brahm's beautiful choral and orchestral arrangement of the poem by Friedrich Schiller, Nänie. This poem takes up through the lens of ancient Greek mythology the question of the inevitability of death: "Auch das Schöne muß sterben," that even the beautiful must die! This sad occurrence can bring even goddesses to tears. However, their death is not the end when we sing in honor of those dead. Through our songs of lament we give them immortality. They may die, but beauty itself does ... (read more)

Eivind Opsvik Overseas - LunÀtico
September 09, 2019 - Brooklyn

Tony Malaby - tenor saxophone Jacob Sacks - piano Brandon Seabrook - guitar Eivind Opsvik - bass Kenny Wollesen - drums The Overseas band — each member of which is very well-known in NYC jazz circles — has been around for over fifteen years, a long time in an environment where projects come and go. The band has managed to stay fresh and reshape their sound for every new record. Overseas III was ambient and almost minimalist. Overseas IV featured the harpsichord. Overseas V focused on great sounding beats and a love for New Wave. Norwegian ex-pat bassist Eivind Opsvik writes the compositions but they all share a common vision of always playing for the music. It's about collectively creating something larger than the individuals and they've developed a second nature connection and an elastic approach to time, pitch, and harmony.

Alwyn Robinson - LunÀtico
September 10, 2019 - Brooklyn

East Texas born singer, song-writer and percussionist, Alwyn Robinson , took off on his solo career after the debut release of his first record Bluebonnet EP. He's has played shows with the likes of artists ranging from Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive, to Colorado jam band, Leftover Salmon, to jazz trumpeter and cornetist, Ron Miles. A Brooklyn resident, Alwyn's project has landed in a groove of psychedelic soul, woven with intricate textures of percussion, instrumentation, and warm, gritty, honey-like vocals. Alwyn's debut record, Bluebonnet, ties past journeys together. While coping with the suicide of a close personal friend, Barney, Bluebonnet Ep encompasses his emotional and physical journey. Bluebonnet is an explorative diary of Alwyn's struggles of hopelessness and the drive to find comfort in who he is as a human being; it is a realization of the importance of bringing the music back home, to his Texas roots.
