Opera in New York City This Week
The Metropolitan Opera is world-class and world famous, and it's among the comprehensive opera listings you can find on City Guide's calendar. Figaro X Figaro - Bare Opera

This never-before-seen adaptation by director Cecilia Ligorio and resident conductor Sesto Quatrini cleverly weaves Rossini's The Barber of Seville into Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro as a series of flashbacks. Through the music of Rossini we glimpse the early lives of the characters from Beaumarchais' famous trilogy, which gives greater perspective on the matured characters in Mozart's story. With all the most memorable operatic moments intact, this "marriage" of two of the most famous Italian operas clocks in at a fast two hours, with some of opera's rising stars at the storytelling healm. The Cat in the Hat - Paper Mill Playhouse

The Orchestra Now Leon Botstein, conductor Kirsten Chambers, soprano Schoenberg's Erwartung (Expectation) and the artwork of Edvard Munch. At the climax of Schoenberg's compact operatic monodrama, a woman screams upon finding the dead body of her lover. The close connections between Schoenberg's score and Munch's symbolism extend beyond the composer's expressionist music. The composer was also a painter, heavily influenced by Munch. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Edvard Munch: Between the Clock and the Bed, on view at The Met Breuer, November 14, 2017–February 4, 2018. View the series. Bring the Kids for $1. Evan Rogister conducts Julie Taymor's spellbinding production, with special holiday pricing and a 100-minute running time. Nathan Gunn reprises his much-loved portrayal of the bird-catcher Papageno.

"Ponselle, Milanov, Sutherland, Callas … after last night, Radvanovsky can add her name to the list," declared the Huffington Post when Sondra Radvanovsky made her Met role debut as Norma in 2013. The 2017–18 season opens with a new production of Bellini's masterpiece, starring Radvanovsky as the Druid priestess and Joyce DiDonato as her archrival, Adalgisa—a casting coup for bel canto fans. Tenor Joseph Calleja is Pollione, Norma's unfaithful lover, and Carlo Rizzi conducts. Sir David McVicar's evocative production sets the action deep in a Druid forest where nature and ancient ritual rule. Production a gift of Veronica Atkins

The Sound of M Butterfly - Rubin Museum

What is the most mesmerizing music you've ever heard? The soaring melodies of an opera can leave us spellbound, with carefully sung notes evoking powerful emotions that go against the grain of reason. David Henry Hwang builds upon this seductive nature of music in his Tony-award-winning play, M Butterfly. In this love story born at the opera, a French diplomat falls for a Chinese opera diva, leading to a twenty-year affair. In a relationship wrought with secrets, espionage, and betrayal, the protagonists wrestle with their truths and desires. Hwang takes to the Rubin stage with NYU psychologist Emily Balcetis to explore music's role in the intrigue and mystery of a complex and moving story. M Butterfly, starring Clive Owen and directed by Julie Taymor, runs from October 2017 to February 2018 at the Cort Theater.
