The Mountain Goats+Mothers - Brooklyn Steel
November 12, 2017 - New York

John called me about playing with the Mountain Goats in 2001. Not for the first time, mind you. I'd signed on for a couple European tours in 1996, playing bass; the first had gone swimmingly and led to a second, which didn't. Still, a foundation had been laid: John and I, already close friends, had developed over the course of those tours a musical chemistry strong enough that, even five years later, we were still bummed that the only people who got to see it were a handful of indifferent Bavarian villagers. " Do you want to do some recording?" John asked. Yeah, I said. We should totally do some recording. It turned out to be a fateful conversation. Not more than a week or two later, the venerable London indie 4AD got in touch, and we found ourselves suddenly charged with making an album. In a studio. With a producer. We spent an intense week at Dave Fridmann's Tarbox Road, with Glasgow's Tony Doogan at the board. There was some give and take. I loved the Mountain Goats, but I'd heard ten years' worth of boombox Mountain Goats albums and wanted to swing for the fences. John was game while insisting that certain defining orthodoxies be preserved. We met in the middle and were both p... (read more)

Tim Barry - Rough Trade NYC
November 12, 2017 - Brooklyn

Tim Barry has been kicking around the musical underground for nearly 20 years, first as the front man for legendary Virginian punk heroes Avail, and more recently as a singer-songwriter with a penchant for constructing beautiful folk and country tunes. Dude's been particularly busy the past few years, gigging relentlessly, including yearly participation in The Revival Tour with fellow travelers Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Ben Nichols (Lucero), and Tom Gabel (Against Me!), and generating a steady stream of recordings. Late last year, he released a split 7" EP with pal Frank Turner (co-released by Epitaph and Suburban Home), while 2010 will see the arrival of "28th & Stonewall", Barry's third full length recording, a masterful collection of heartsick dirges, wry commentary, and upbeat stomp-alongs. Suburban Home Records.

Slowdive - Terminal 5
November 12, 2017 - New York

After 22 years, Slowdive return with "Star Roving", their first new material since 1995's Pygmalion. Featuring Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals) and Simon Scott (drums, electronics), "Star Roving" embodies the effortlessness for which Slowdive is known -- as the song progresses, it expands and contracts in ways that feel infinite. Slowdive released their debut album, Just For A Day, in 1991 via Creation Records. The highly revered Souvlaki followed in 1993 and Pygmalion in 1995, and then the band disbanded. In the 22 years of their virtual disappearance, compilation albums have been released and the core members of the group have gone on to join other musical endeavors. In 2014, Slowdive announced that they had reunited and more new music would follow. Upon today's release of new single, "Star Roving," the band has also announced signing to Dead Oceans. Halstead says, "When the band decided to get back together in 2014, we really wanted to make new music. It's taken us a whole load of shows and a few false starts to get to that point, but it's with pride and a certain trepidation we unleash 'St... (read more)

Pere Ubu - Music Hall of Williamsburg
November 12, 2017 - Brooklyn

Pere Ubu is a rock band that considers itself to be working within the mainstream of the genre. Pere Ubu make a music that is a disorienting mix of midwestern groove rock, "found" sound, analog synthesizers, falling-apart song structures and careening vocals. It is a mix that has mesmerized critics, musicians and fans for decades. The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby Stills Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in London, Paris, Manchester, New York and Minneapolis. Pere Ubu was changing the face of rock music. Over the next four decades they defined the art of cult; refined the voice of the outsider; and inspired the likes of Joy Division, Pixies, Husker Du, Henry Rollins, REM, Sisters of Mercy, Thomas Dolby, Bauhaus, Julian Cope and countless others.

Metronomy - Brooklyn Steel
November 13, 2017 - New York

The metronome is not a device known for its deviation. It strikes a predictable, functional pattern. Each time Metronomy release an album, on the other hand, there is a scorched earth change of pace and tone. Yet the pulse never disappears, it just reanimates for a brand new dancefloor. Anyone expecting more of the same digital melancholia as heard on the universally-lauded Nights Out is in for a shock – but a pleasant one. The English Riviera, Metronomy's third album – and second, after Nights Out, on Because Music – is a belting, unashamed pop album, a gorgeous record full of languid, sunset funk songs, which looks set to propel Metronomy even further than they have travelled thus far. The gorgeous 'Everything Goes My Way', featuring the voice of Roxanne Clifford of Veronica Falls, is an understated summer classic. The organ hook that defines first single 'The Look' burrows into your head and doesn't leave. Crucially too, it is an album that is even more danceable than its predecessor.

Julia Jacklin - Rough Trade NYC
November 13, 2017 - Brooklyn

Growing up in the Blue Mountains to a family of teachers, Jacklin discovered an avenue to art at the age of 10, thanks to an unlikely source: Britney Spears. Jacklin chanced upon a documentary about the pop star while on family holiday. "By the time Britney was 12 she'd achieved a lot," says Jacklin."I remember thinking, 'Shit, what have I done with my life? I haven't achieved anything.' So I was like, 'Mum, as soon as we get home from this holiday I need to go to singing lessons.' Classical singing lessons were the only kind in the area, but Jacklin took to it. Voice control was crucial, and Jacklin flourished. But the lack of expression had the teen seeking substance, and she wound up in a high school band, "wearing surf clothing and doing a lot of high jumps" singing Avril Lavigne and Evanescence covers. It wasn't much but she was hooked. Don't mistake this awareness for nostalgia. "It's not that I want to go back to that time at all," says Jacklin. "It's trying to figure out how to be responsible when you don't identify with who you were anymore." "All my friends at this age are freaking out. Everyone's constantly talking about being old. "Don't Let The Kids Win" is... (read more)

The Wild Reeds - Mercury Lounge
November 13, 2017 - New York

The Wild Reeds' sound is highlighted by the interweaving vocal harmonies of three phenomenally talented front-women - Kinsey Lee, Sharon Silva and Mackenzie Howe - who swap lead vocal duties and shuffle between an array of acoustic and electric instruments throughout the set. They are backed by a rhythm section of Nick Jones (drums) and Nick Phakpiseth (bass). Each with their own style, The Wild Reeds' three songwriters make music that is dynamic and unpredictable. They write lyrics and melodies with the thoughtfulness of seasoned folk artists, and perform with the reckless enthusiasm of a young punk band in a garage. Warm acoustic songs and harmonium pump organ seamlessly give way to fuzzed-out shredding and guitar distortion. With the upcoming release of 'The World We Built' on April 7, the Los Angeles-based quintet continues a national breakthrough that has been rapidly growing since the release of their EP 'Best Wishes' this summer. NPR Music critic Bob Boilen championed the band, saying "great singers aren't easy to come by, so finding three in one band is something special." The New York Times praised their live show, saying "the communal experience was amazing," while ... (read more)

In addition to dazzling musicianship and interplay, The California Guitar Trio's (CGT) shows are full of captivating stories and humor that enable concert-goers to feel like they're part of the music, not just spectators. Iron & Wine+Ohmme - Brooklyn Steel
November 14, 2017 - New York

Beast epic. n. A long, usually allegorical verse narrative in which the characters are animals with human feelings and motives. I must confess that I've always shied away from album introductions citing the usual "dancing to architecture" cop out. Speaking to their own work is uncomfortable for many artists, but I've made a new album called Beast Epic which is important to me and I wanted to take a moment to talk about why. I've been releasing music for about fifteen years now and I feel very blessed to have put out five other full lengths, many EPs and singles, a few collaborations with people much more talented than myself, and made contributions to numerous movie scores and soundtracks. This is my sixth collection of new Iron & Wine material and I'm happy to say that it's my fourth for Sub Pop Records. It's a warm and serendipitous time to be reuniting with my Seattle friends because I feel there's a certain kinship between this new collection of songs and my earliest material, which Sub Pop was kind enough to release. In hindsight, both The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002) and Our Endless Numbered Days (2004) epitomize a reflective and confessional songwriting style (a... (read more)

David First: Western Enisphere - Roulette
November 14, 2017 - Brooklyn

David First's Western Enisphere presents new work for ensemble & electronics exploring hyper-minimalist microtonality and sensual phenomena. Western Enisphere was formed by David First and Jeanann Dara in the spring of April 2012 with the intention of developing a body of hyper-minimalist, audio/video just intonation/microtonal works steeped in First's concepts of Gestural Improvisation, which he defines as a set of procedures that isolates those musical elements traditionally considered ornamentation or aspects of expression and elevating them to the level of most significant extrapolative detail. Gathering some of the best, most in-demand musicians in NYC along the way, the ensemble has worked extensively over this time to internalize what First calls "a virtuosity of slowness and safecracker focus, with the goal of both resonating with, and attempting to subvert, the laws of nature."

Alex Clare - Mercury Lounge
November 14, 2017 - New York

London-born singer, songwriter and producer Alex Clare is one of those lucky people who will never be short of something startling to tell when the lights dim and true conversation really begins. "Where do you even start with a story like mine?" he laughs, down the line from his home in Jerusalem - and he makes a good point. Alex signed a major label deal with Island in 2010, released a single and an album then got unceremoniously dropped. When, in 2012, a song called 'Too Close' was pulled from the album and placed on an Internet Explorer 9 advert it prompted millions of sales and, lo and behold, he got re-signed. Eighteen months later he made a new album that the label failed to get behind and, as you might expect, it sold, in his own words, "nothing." He got married, toured the US, Russia and Europe and started a family.

November 14, 2017 - Manhattan

Dan Zlotnick grew up in Westchester, New York. He first picked up the guitar on his eleventh birthday and taught himself to play by watching concert DVDs of Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Bruce Springsteen. Dan's passion for writing music began in high school when he was the lead guitarist for the alternative rock group, Hot Soup, which drew inspiration from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. Dan developed his upbeat, acoustic rock style while attending college on a baseball scholarship. He found time between practices and games to perform at coffee houses and fundraising events. After college, Dan kept his guitar in hand throughout a three-year professional baseball career, which brought him around the United States and Canada.

Nilüfer Yanya - Mercury Lounge
November 14, 2017 - New York

The 22-year old London-based singer/songwriter has been making music since age six when she first began playing classical piano. Shortly after, she began learning cello and guitar before exploring the world of singing and songwriting. By 16, she was sharing acoustic demos online and at 21 released her debut EP, Small Crimes. She quickly drew attention and acclaim from prominent publications such as Pitchfork, The Fader, NME, Noisey, and The Line of Best Fit. Plant Feed, her follow up to Small Crimes, has continued to showcase the young singer's talent and artistic ability.

Joywave - Bowery Ballroom
November 14, 2017 - New York

Joywave is an eclectic group specializing in alternative pop hailing from Rochester, NY. After the success of 2013's 88888 mixtape, they established their Hollywood Records imprint Cultco Music, through which they released this debut EP How Do You Feel?. With a catalog that deftly jumps between genre, Joywave's How Do You Feel? EP demonstrates the band's pointed talent for blending influences. The Joywave sound is grounded in classic songwriting, often injected with house music's energy, disco's layfulness and an overarching hip-hop spirit. Where any other band might lose its identity in the quest to experiment with so many different sounds, Joywave's all-embracing approach and ineffable knack for making music that feels good puts their distinct personality front and center.

John Moreland - Rough Trade NYC
November 14, 2017 - Brooklyn

The replay of John Moreland's network television debut is…glorious and affirming and a sucker punch. He is announced by Stephen Colbert, lights dissolve, and the camera slowly focuses on the person midway across the unadorned stage, revealing him beneath muted blue lights. He is a big man. Seated, alone, cradling his acoustic guitar. He looks like nobody who is famous. Then he begins to sing, to caress the song "Break My Heart Sweetly," and all that remains is to whisper, "Oh, my god." In Colbert's studio everybody stood, like they were in church. Big Bad Luv is the record John Moreland made after, after everything in his life changed. For the better. He sings in one of those accents from flyover country that's impossible to locate and implausible to mimic. (Texas, by way of Northern Kentucky, but mostly Tulsa, as it happens.) He sings directly from his heart, with none of the restraint and filters and caution the rest of us would apply for public protection. He sings with resolute courage.

Peter Cincotti - The Cutting Room
November 14, 2017 - New York

88 keys, a bench and a mic. Give those things to Peter Cincotti and he can take you anywhere. Like a pilot in a cockpit, when Cincotti sits down at a piano it's as if the world is at his fingertips. And this time, on his highly anticipated new album, he is indeed traveling a Long Way From Home. "Never before have I used the piano in this way. A few years ago, I began having these visions of an album that brings active, rhythmic piano playing back into the landscape of modern music." Peter learned how to play the instrument at the same age he learned how to walk and talk. It's as integral to him as the bare essential elements of life. "It wasn't something that I ever thought about doing, it was just something I did," he recalls. "And as I got older, I consciously walked the line of learning more, and learning too much. The minute it gets too cerebral, it's over." A born and bred New Yorker of Italian descent, Cincotti spent much of his childhood going to school during the day and playing clubs at night. Legendary music producer Phil Ramone was there one of those nights, a discovery that led Ramone to produce Peter's debut album which reached #1 on the Billboard jazz charts... (read more)

Ari Hest at City Vineyard - Hudson River Park - Pier 26
November 14, 2017 - Tribeca

I've been making music and touring the planet for about 15 years. What started out as an occasional creative outlet is now my way of life. Growing up just outside New York City, I began playing guitar in the hallways of my high school, learning the songs of The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Smashing Pumpkins, and Dave Matthews Band. I graduated, went to college for a communications degree, and finished feeling way more inclined to make music than anything else, so I hit the road. In these past 15 years, I've played in every state in the U.S. and toured extensively throughout Europe. I've had the honor of playing with a slew of incredible musicians wherever I've gone.

Erin Markey: Boner Killer - Joe's Pub at The Public
Through November 14, 2017 - New York

Comprised of her signature story-driven stand-up and scored by sensual, homemade pop, Erin Markey's Boner Killer is an intimate musical conversation between what Markey thinks she can't have and how she'd have it if she could. Driven by Whitney Houston's lesbian mythologies, Europe™, and a Pretty Woman accident, Markey sacrifices her own life to transform personal humiliations into naked feminist hope. Markey and frequent collaborator Emily Bate make up the two-girl, harmony-driven band performing original and sampled music.

Marc Broussard (Album Release) - Meet & Greet Ticket Only - City Winery
November 15, 2017 - New York

Marc Broussard is an artist with a unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms. This gift has been a matter of common knowledge since 2002, when Broussard released his debut album, Momentary Setback, which he recorded and released independently at age 20. It was no secret before then, going back to those lucky witnesses who heard him belt "Johnny B. Goode" onstage at age 5 while sitting in with his father's band. Throughout his life, Broussard has been tapped as a talent to watch. Marc's song "Home" was successful at radio and catapulted him onto the national touring stage. His music has been placed in many TV shows and movies. The timeless, soulful nature of Marc's vocal lends well to Film and TV, and will continue to do so for years to come.

The Drums+Methyl Ethel - Brooklyn Steel
November 15, 2017 - New York

With The Drums' new 'Abysmal Thoughts,' band founder Jonny Pierce is making the exact album he's always held in his heart. Of course, this is The Drums, so that heart is broken -- but there's beauty and even bliss in this kind of heartbreak, as well as that special kind of glorious delirium that comes from taking everything life can throw at you and still walking away triumphant. If 'Abysmal Thoughts' doesn't sound at all abysmal -- really, Pierce has rarely been this irresistibly pop -- that's because this is a story about how to figure out what happiness means once the worst has already happened. "Happiness can be confusing to me," says Pierce. "It shows up out of nowhere, and before you can even get used to it, it's vanished. But 'Abysmal Thoughts?' I can rely on them -- and with the political chaos that is raining down, who knows when these dark feelings will subside?" As the last album cycle for the Drums finished and his long-term relationship with his former partner dissolved, Pierce took some time away from music altogether in hopes to reconnect with himself and find future inspiration. Determined to make a change, he ended up leaving his longtime home in New York and fo... (read more)

Eric Clapton Acoustic Tribute: Gorgeous Renditions of 'Layla' & Beyond - Club Bonafide
November 15, 2017 - New York

As the driving force behind Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes, Clapton took the classic blues rock sound to new heights. But strip away the distortion, the fuzz pedals and the megawatt amps, and you're left with some of the most gorgeous songwriting and musicianship of the classic rock era. Now you can enjoy unplugged versions of Clapton's unforgettable songs by Spiros Soukis and Hendrik Helmer as they play "Layla" and other Clapton-penned love songs in this special acoustic guitar tribute at Club Bonafide in NYC. Soukis, a native of Greece, is a well-known blues man, performing regularly at B.B. King's and other top clubs. He's joined by Helmer, a guitarist and songwriter who's played with luminaries like Carly Simon and Paul Shaffer, and recently made his Carnegie Hall debut.

The Black Heart Procession, Sam Coomes - Baby's All Right
November 15, 2017 - New York

After Three Mile Pilot began an open-ended hiatus in 1997, singer/guitarist Pall Jenkins and multi-instrumentalist Tobias Nathaniel embarked on a darker, more subdued journey as The Black Heart Procession. In the many years and albums since, the band's line-up has expanded and contracted, but at its heart and soul remains Jenkins and Nathaniel, creating timeless, heart-wrenching classics that are adventurous, eclectic, and consistently brilliant. In 2017, they'll bring you their first record, from start to finish. Here's what they'd like you to know: In a small town, with but a small chance, two lowly miscreants toiled feverishly into the small hours of the night creating ballads of loss and self-deprecation, in hopes of illuming the world with their particularly despondent brand of mischievousness. Nearly twenty years later, these very same scoundrels have arrived upon your doorstep to drown your sorrows, ease your pains and release your hearts.

King Crimson - The Capitol Theatre
November 15, 2017 - Port Chester

"King Crimson is, as always, more a way of doing things. When there is nothing to be done, nothing is done: Crimson disappears. When there is music to be played, Crimson reappears. If all of life were this simple". Robert Fripp. King Crimson was conceived in November 1968 and born on January 13th 1969 in the Fulham Palace Cafe, London (Fripp/Ian McDonald/Greg Lake/Michael Giles/Pete Sinfield), coming to prominence after supporting The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park. Their ground-breaking debut In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969) described by Pete Townshend as "an uncanny masterpiece", began a career that has spanned nearly five decades. Despite the original line-up imploding after an American tour King Crimson continued to produce constantly challenging and intriguing music on albums such as In The Wake of Poseidon (1970), Lizard (1970), Islands (1971), Earthbound (1972), Larks' Tongues in Aspic (1973) and Red (1974). Following Red, an exhausted Fripp declared "King Crimson is completely over for ever and ever." After a period outside the music industry, Robert Fripp returned to work on solo projects (including Frippertronics and his first solo album, Exposure in 1979) an... (read more)

Silversun Pickups - Terminal 5
November 15, 2017 - New York

It's no secret that Silversun Pickups score the soundtrack for the cacophony and quiet of the urban environment. Their songs curl like a sleeping dragon around the foothills, soar between the skyscrapers, and slouch in the shadows of forbidden offramps and skid row. Now, three years after their second record, Silversun Pickups are currently in Topanga, CA, working on their highly anticipated new record with producer Jacknife Lee (U2, Weezer, REM, Snow Patrol). The record will be released in the summer of 2012 on the band's longtime home, Dangerbird Records. Silversun Pickups have sold over 1 million records worldwide. Their first EP, Pikul, was released in 2005. While it hinted at great things to come, no one was quite prepared for the explosion of the band's debut LP, Carnavas. Released in 2006, the record peaked at #81 on the Billboard Top 200 and was the #1 Alternative and Independent record for four consecutive weeks. The fantastic single, "Lazy Eye," peaked at #4 at Modern Rock. In 2009, SSPU followed up with the equally powerful Swoon. That record debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 and was in that chart for over 22 weeks on the strength of the #1 Modern Rock smash, ... (read more)

The Wrecks - Mercury Lounge
November 15, 2017 - New York

Los Angeles-based indie rock band The Wrecks root from Thousand Oaks, CA. The group consists of Nick Anderson (vocals/guitar), Nick Schmidt (lead guitar), Westen Weiss (guitar), Aaron Kelley (bass), and Billy Nally (drums). Heavily influenced by groups such as The Pixies, The Strokes, Weezer, and Vampire Weekend, this 5-piece isn't afraid to blend undeniably catchy choruses, with self-deprecative, honest lyrics and vocals that pull you right to the center of each song. The band actually recorded their debut EP on a whim, alongside friend and engineer Andrew D'Angelo, when they were surprised with the news that a friend had been granted access to a studio for just a few days. With a total budget of $0, and only a week as a band under their belts, the group set out to record the best songs that they could in 3 days. After working ridiculous hours through the night, and to the next day whenever they could get in the studio, the 3 days were over and the EP was cut. Little did the band know, they were not even allowed to be in the studio that week. So through feelings of guilt and worry, they cleaned every bit of information of theirs from the studio computer, every crumb of Dominoe... (read more)

Loren Connors & Oren Ambarchi Duo - ISSUE Project Room
November 15, 2017 - Brooklyn

Wednesday, November 15th, ISSUE is pleased to present the first-ever duo performance between singular guitarists Loren Connors and Oren Ambarchi: an occasion intersecting their parallel championing of the instrumental abstraction of the guitar, and their independently meaningful performance histories at ISSUE. Two elemental figures in the progression of guitar music across its various evolutions, Connors and Ambarchi embody and deconstruct the tense dichotomies between their performative leanings: the painterly and technical, the flickering tone and the pure signal, the expressive and minimal. Their differences often stylistically overlap in the subtlety of their techniques and in their expansive improvisational careers -- a constellation of collaborations that include their respective recordings and concerts with Jim O'Rourke, Aki Onda, Alan Licht and Keiji Haino (most recently Ambarchi with Nazoranai, and Connors with a transatlantic improvisation that took place in Shibuya and ISSUE in 2014).

Pnb Rock - Catch These Vibes Album Release Party - Irving Plaza
November 16, 2017 - New york

R&B music isn't all flowers and candy; just ask Rakim "PnB Rock" Allen. The 23-year-old singer's earliest inspiration didn't come from the bedroom, but from the streets. "At first I would look at R&B artists like they're all about love, and soft. Then I saw you could be a street boy and sing and still be hot. I knew I could do that shit," he says. PnB Rock hails from Pastorius and Baynton Streets in the Germantown section of Philadelphia — that's where he found the "P" and "B" in his name. That's also where he found himself in a bit of trouble. When Rock was 13 years old, he got sent away to a youth detention program for fighting in school and committing robberies. When Rock turned 19, he was sent to prison; it was there where he learned to blend calming melodies with hard street stories. "There were people up there singing in the yard. They were doing the same thing that I was doing, but they were serious with it," he remembers. "There would be crowds around them and that was our entertainment, everybody loved it.

Saint Motel - Brooklyn Steel
November 16, 2017 - New York

A/J Jackson (vocals), Aaron Sharp (guitar), Dak Lerdamornpong (bass), Greg Erwin (drums) The year before making their breakthrough with a mainstage performance at Coachella and the chart topping single "My Type," Saint Motel had planned to host an event of their own called "saintmotelevision"—a multimedia spectacular of music, dance, comedy, art, and more that was shut down by authorities before it even took place. "That crazy mixture of worlds and ideas is something we've always gravitated toward," says front man A/J Jackson in reflecting on the original saintmotelevision. "We've always been fans of strange combinations, and that glorious yet doomed event became a symbol of all that." So when it came time to create their forthcoming full-length debut for Elektra, the band reclaimed the name saintmotelevision and, in the end, dreamed up an album as magnificently kaleidoscopic as that mythic party itself. Featuring production from the likes of Lars Stalfors (Cold War Kids) and Tim Pagnotta (Walk The Moon)—as well as from Jackson, in and around the band's own studio in downtown L.A.—saintmotelevision builds off 2014's My Type EP with a sound even more expansive and artfully ... The Music of Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston - Club Bonafide
November 16, 2017 - New York

The Music of Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston Feat. Emilie Surtees For a singer with such powerful pipes, it's something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a "listener." Then again, maybe it's her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her tribute to Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston its amazing accuracy. Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them — something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors in this concert at Club Bonafide.

Alex Lahey - Mercury Lounge
November 16, 2017 - New York

"I'm just some random from Melbourne." Alex Lahey likes to keep it real. The 24-year-old Australian musician takes her rise up the ranks from music student to 'an artist with one of the most highly anticipated debut albums of 2017' in her stride. Lahey sees her life as ordinary: "I fall in love, I have a family, I go out with my friends, I like to have a drink." However, most people can't distil those universal experiences into wry, punchy indie-rock songs - three minute odes to millennial angst and all the complicated feelings that come with it. Alex Lahey can. 'Love You Like A Brother' is proof.

Palm, Two Nights at Elsewhere Night Two - Elsewhere
November 16, 2017 - Brooklyn

Palm plays rock music backwards. Their songs bear a certain methodology, though there is a tendency towards impulse which seems almost violently opposed to it. The band deals willfully in contradictions like this. The elements of any given song fit together like slightly melted puzzle pieces, serving up rigidity and looseness in equal measure. Palm songs imply architecture, but their compositional structures are somehow bound by different rules of physics than the ones we know. Lattices of guitar language (provided by Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt) intersect the rhythmic organism characterized by the twitchy throb of Gerasimos Livitsanos' bass and the careless tumble of Hugo Stanley's drums, with a layer of disembodied vocals draped atop the whole thing. Emotional yet clinical, wild yet contained, the sounds they offer are equally bizarre as they are pleasantly pretty.

Circa Survive Thrice - Terminal 5
November 17, 2017 - New York

Philadelphia's Circa Survive was formed by former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green with guitarist Colin Frangicetto -- both of them veterans of the local emo and hardcore scenes looking to indulge in the rule-breaking freedom of the neo-progressive movement of the mid-2000s. After Green and Frangicetto discovered likeminded bandmates in second guitarist Brendan Ekstrom, bassist Nick Beard, and drummer Steve Clifford, Circa Survive recorded their debut album, Juturna (named after a Roman goddess), for Equal Vision Records in 2005. Lots of touring followed, including Warped Tour dates, and the album steadily sold close to an impressive 100,000 copies. A spot on the 2007 Coachella festival led into the late May release of Circa Survive's follow-up, On Letting Go. The band's latest effort Blue Sky Noise was release in April of 2010.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - PlayStation Theater
November 17, 2017 - New York

The Stooges, the Ramones, Einstürzende Neubauten, The Shangri-Las: an eclectic range of influences for sure, and one that inspired brothers Jim and William Reid as The Jesus and Mary Chain emerged from Lanarkshire, Scotland, to become one of the most influential bands of their era. What followed was a rush of creativity and controversy in which the power of their music – most strikingly the landmark debut 'Psychocandy' – was matched by the volatility of their relationship. Their journey sparked a wider influence. Not only did their success help Alan McGee's Creation Records to flourish into the home of Britain's most critically acclaimed bands from My Bloody Valentine to Oasis to Super Furry Animals, but early drummer Bobby Gillespie made history of his own with Primal Scream.

Arkells - Bowery Ballroom

ARKELLS: MORNING REPORT NEW ALBUM AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE AUGUST 5THPRODUCED BY: JOE CHICCARELLI (THE STROKES, MY MORNING JACKET), TONY HOFFER (BECK, M83), BRIAN WEST (SIA, AWOLNATION), GUS VAN GO (THE STILLS, WINTERSLEEP) "It's a weird time to be a rock band right now," observes Max Kerman, the singer, guitarist, and chief songwriter for the Arkells. "I just feel like rock has gotten so conservative and doesn't know where to go. To be honest, I don't really listen to a lot of rock music right now."That's not a radical statement for your average twenty-something in this EDM-dominated era, but it's a bit surprising coming from a guitar-slinging guy whose band seemingly personifies a certain old-school, ethic. Hailing from the gritty industrial outpost of Hamilton, Ontario, the Arkells have notched four Juno Awards and a gold record on their sweat-rusted belts, proving there's still a place for passionate, no-bullshit rock 'n' soul in the mainstream. (In 2015, they were the most-played band on Canadian alt-rock radio.) But the group's new album, Morning Report, betrays a more irreverent, adventurous ethos that more readily recalls the cut-and-paste approach of hip-hop beatmakers than the... (read more)

The Cowsills - The Cutting Room
November 17, 2017 - New York

The real-life inspiration behind the hit television series The Partridge Family, The Cowsills -- were one of the biggest pop acts of the late '60s. Distinguished by their angelic harmonies and sun-kissed melodies. The group's origins lie with brothers Bill and Bob, who as children began their singing careers covering Everly Brothers hits. Given guitars by their father, Navy man William "Bud" Cowsill, the siblings soon recruited younger brothers Barry and John to play bass and drums, respectively, and as Beatlemania dawned, the teen foursome began performing live at school dances and church socials throughout their native Newport, RI. Eventually they landed a regular weekend gig at the local club, Dorians, on Bannisters Wharf, and in 1965, recorded the single "All I Really Wanta Be Is Me" on the Joda label; the record generated little response until an appearance on NBC's The Today Show. The group then signed with Mercury Records, releasing three more singles. Upon signing with MGM in 1967, The Cowsills with their lineup now numbering seven (brother Paul, sister Susan and mother Barbara joining the original four) had their first million-selling single, "The Rain, the Park an... Jenny O - Mercury Lounge
November 18, 2017 - New York

"These aren't necessarily the songs I wanted to write, but they were the ones I had to write," Jenny O. says of the material that became Peace & Information, her sophomore record and the second she's collaborated on with producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Conor Oberst, Dawes). "I had a difficult year or two, so I wrote my way out of it." This difficult chapter included challenging romantic relationships, a move from L.A. to Nashville, depression, trauma, a resulting case of PTSD, and a lot of inward work, not necessarily in that order. These experiences resulted in a group of songs that take the listener on a journey that culminates in insights about increased intuition, the pursuit of self-actualization, and taking back one's personal power. Jenny began making simple recordings on her father's reel-to-reel tape machine as a teenager and kick started her career with the self-produced and heartily licensed Home EP. In 2015, Jenny O. was awarded The Holly Prize by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as "an exceptionally talented and inspired young musician whose work exhibits the qualities of Holly's music: true, great, and original." After O.'s first full length Autome... (read more)

Denizen Blonde Otter - Mercury Lounge
November 18, 2017 - New York

Cousins Dave Schafer and Pete Vale bore the idea of forming a rock band late in 2011 as a therapeutic release from the pressurized day to day of New York City living. Adding on bass guitarist Andrew Wilkes, drummer Ben Selznick, and keyboard player James Gettinger, the band was complete in early 2012. For about a year, they would get together informally, sing, talk, and enjoy the company of each others' talents, focused initially only on their favorite rock covers and whatever other melodies happened to pass before their minds. But the energy in the room soon developed into something more, and they began to write songs together: ones they liked so much that they felt compelled to share. In January of 2013 they played their first live show in the basement of a small club in Manhattan. From there, things took off quickly as crowds progressively got bigger and bigger. Denizen soon became a staple on the Lower East Side music scene, quickly moving from mid-sized venues like Arlene's Grocery and Pianos to professional concert halls like Webster Hall. But the rise was not without setbacks. The lineup had to be changed with the departure of Ben and James, and for a good while, it wasn'... (read more)

American Football+Pure Bathing Culture - Brooklyn Steel
November 19, 2017 - New York

A record comes to represent and trigger a specific era in the listener, an unchanging document against which people can measure their own evolution and feel returned to not only their own season with this record, but also the imagined landscape and lives of the artists. That American Football's first record continued to resonate with an ever-expanding coalition of new listeners long after their brief existence is proof of the skillfulness and subtlety with which they could express themselves as undergrads. And that mysterious aura is a lot to live up to. People have had almost twenty years to live alongside that album. And now, in a flash, their body of work doubles. That first record was made in complete innocence and obscurity, and even naivety. But now, could anyone even count how many different instruments in how many different bands Mike and Nate Kinsella have played? The simple addition of bass goes a long way in rounding out and deepening the overall sound. Tightened and confident, they hit every pickup and hiccup, ably executing what they always intended to, but on a bigger scale. With an easy-breezy shuffle, they balance Jackson Brown and Steely Dan with rushing, ... (read more)

Ron Gallo - Rough Trade NYC
November 19, 2017 - Brooklyn

I have probably spent too much time being pissed off and upset with humanity; how far we've let ourselves go. Just another millennial guy with large hair trying in earnest to take on the weight of the world; taking passionate and hypercritical walks down city blocks, somehow totally aware and above the illusion, overflowing with informed negativity to destroy the illusion and only feeding it. Besides a couple of years of emotional and mental turmoil, loss, confusion, breakdown and internal growth what did all of that ever get me? Well, it gave me this record called "HEAVY META" and it is the first few findings from my guerilla treasure hunt for bullshit, both outside and within. Ethos meets pathos. The only thing I do know is that I want to use music to reflect the times and as a primary outlet for me to become a total psychopath on stage, challenge myself and talk about potentially heavy real world things, call you out, then maybe we can even hug after the show. I am forever grateful for this life and anyone that ever comes to a show, buys a record and wants to have a real conversation. I have no idea where things are going, but I know it's best to grow with them and be oka... (read more)

Matt Wertz w/ opener Dustin Ransom - Joe's Pub at the Public Theater
November 19, 2017 - New York

A self-made singer/songwriter, Matt Wertz spent years creating soulful, feel-good pop music on his own terms. Nashville — a city that doubled as his muse and adopted hometown — always played a big role in that creation process. It was the place where Wertz wrote his songs, the place he recorded his albums, the place he'd return after touring the country with songwriters like Jason Mraz, Maroon 5, Parachute and Gavin DeGraw. Filled with left-field love songs about guarding yourself, opening your heart to new possibilities, and wrestling with the sacrifice and vulnerability that love requires of everyone, Gun Shy finds Wertz urging his listeners — and, perhaps, himself — to continue taking leaps. It's an album about stepping into unfamiliar situations, armed with the courage to fail and the drive to succeed. On "Committed," the album's kickoff track, Wertz rededicates himself to the artistic struggle, and with "Slow Motion," he focuses his attention on a loved one by clearing away the clutter and distractions of everyday life. Later, during "Hold On To Me," he channels his inner Michael Jackson on a song that poses some of the biggest questions of his career: why we're here, who p... (read more)

The Band CAMINO - Mercury Lounge
November 19, 2017 - New York

Afternoon Men is a five-piece, New York-based rock/roll band. Their songs cycle through a range of styles you might find on a jukebox—Sinatra to Springsteen, bar rock to electro-pop—but these influences are as much a narrative force as a part of their sound. An overarching story links one song to the next, and it features a reappearing cast of characters whose taste in music plays the starring role in how they kill their time.

Jordan Klassen - Mercury Lounge
November 19, 2017 - New York

Big Intruder is an album about growing up and making adult decisions. The eleven tracks, which Jordan Klassen wrote and recorded in his own studio in Vancouver, venture away from the whimsical soundscapes of his past work and exude themes of growth and maturity, both in lyrics and sound. The record was written as a deliberate reaction to Klassen's own inclinations in songwriting. The singer-songwriter moniker has long caused him discomfort, as he felt that it connoted a very specific sound, namely "acoustic guitars and shitty coffee shops." In past records such as Javelin (2016) and Repentance (2013), Klassen strived for a cinematic sound, avoiding drum kits and anything that sounded like a band. In Big Intruder, Klassen confronts those prejudices. He spent a lot of time listening to the greats—Harry Nilsson, Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell—and broadened his own understanding of the singer-songwriter concept. Now, he sees it less as a specific sound, and more as the act of one person telling a story. The resulting songs are intimate and personal, guided by a sense of honesty and vulnerability. The story Klassen tells is of his journey toward growi... (read more)

Abjeez - The Cutting Room
November 19, 2017 - New York

Abjeez is a Swedish-Iranian rock / ska band based in Sweden. Abjee is Persian slang for sister and that's just what they are "The Abjeez", the sisters Melody & Safoura Safavi. Although they started writing songs in the late 90s they didn't form their band until 2005. The intention of their work has always been to be an inspiring alternative force in the Persian pop music/culture. When the sisters started their band for more than 10 years ago, Iran had been "closed" to western culture for almost 30 years and the Persian pop music had become somehow stagnant. Melody & Safoura who were raised in Sweden and had got the chance to nourish their creativity in freedom wanted to make a change in this matter and they did! Abjeez recorded the first album "Hame" (Everyone) and released it in 2006. The idea with the album was to try to compose songs in different genres, with Persian lyrics, to inspire Iranian youth and artists to try out different music styles when composing new music. The styles that immediately got best response were their reggae and SKA songs. Abjeez became the first band who had written Persian reggae and SKA music! Abjeez also got internationally recognised fo... (read more)
