Queen V's Spring Fling - The Cutting Room
April 20, 2018 - New York

Queen V got her start playing the New York City club scene, with performances at venues such as CBGB and Don Hill's. Following the 2002 release of her EP, Critical, she and her band would embark on two high profile tours in 2003, opening for Twisted Sister and then Billy Idol. In 2005 the band won the WDHA Homegrown Spotlight Battle of the Bands which led to daily play on the station and a spot opening for Twisted Sister and Sebastian Bach at Rock The Park. The band would go on to win a number of other competitions including an XM Radio contest that earned them a spot opening for Bon Jovi at the Meadowlands and a 2013 Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands that awarded the group the opening spot at the Jones Beach stop of the Uproar Festival, playing alongside Jane's Addiction, Alice in Chains and others.

The Darkness - Brooklyn Steel
April 20, 2018 - Brooklyn

"England's the Darkness centered around irrepressible frontman Justin Hawkins (vocals/guitars/keyboards), who, along with his guitar-playing baby brother Dan, bassist Frankie Poullain, and drummer Ed Graham, single-handedly resurrected the rather unfashionable sounds and attitudes of late-'70s hard rock for an unsuspecting generation. Following the demise of an earlier, conspicuously synth pop-based outfit named Empire, the Hawkins brothers sowed the seeds of what would become the Darkness at an impromptu karaoke session on New Year's Eve 1999. Justin's rapturous rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" showed them the way, and the suitably dramatic name of the Darkness was chosen shortly after the arrival of Poullain and Graham. With outrageous stage antics that included gaudy leotards stolen from Steven Tyler's wardrobe, leaps and splits borrowed from David Lee Roth, and an ear-piercing falsetto copped from Freddie Mercury himself, the multi-talented elder Hawkins led the quartet as the group spent the next two years slogging it out in London's pub circuit. Though they were immediately singled out as a joke by the notoriously vicious British press, the Darkness' high-energy sets... (read more)

Here Come The Mummies - Highline Ballroom
April 20, 2018 - New York

Here Come the Mummies is an eight-piece funk-rock band of 5000 year-old Egyptian Mummies with a one-track mind. Their "Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave" is sure to get you into them (and possibly vice versa). Since their discovery, HCTM has opened for P-Funk, Al Green, and Cheap Trick; rocked Super Bowl Village; become a regular on The Bob and Tom Show; played massive festivals like Summer Camp, Common Ground, Voodoo Fest, Musikfest, Summerfest, and Riverbend; and sold tickets by the thousands across large swaths of North America. Maybe that's why the ladies (and some dudes) can't stop losing their minds over these mayhem-inducing mavens of mirth. Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh's daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-Winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM's mysterious personas, cunning song-craft, and unrelenting live show will bend your brain, and melt your face. Get ready, for Here Come The Mummies.

The Martin Sexton Trio - City Winery
Through April 20, 2018 - New York

Remember that mix tape your friend made you way back when - the one that's etched in your soul? Martin Sexton's new album Mixtape of the Open Road is that musical cross-country trip, blazing through all territories of style, as you cruise through time and place. This record is a charm bracelet of twelve gems all strung together with the golden thread of what Rolling Stone calls a "soul marinated voice." A native of Syracuse, N.Y., and the tenth of 12 children, Martin Sexton grew up in the '80s. Uninterested in the music of the day, he fueled his dreams with the timeless sounds of classic rock 'n' roll. As he discovered the dusty old vinyl left in the basement by one his big brothers, his musical fire was lit. Sexton eventually migrated to Boston, where he began to build a following singing on the streets of Harvard Square, gradually working his way through the scene. His 1992 collection of self-produced demo recordings, In the Journey, was recorded on an old 8-track in a friend's attic. He managed to sell 20,000 copies out of his guitar case. From 1996 to 2002 Sexton released Black Sheep, The American, Wonder Bar and Live Wide Open. The activity and worldwide touring behin... (read more)

The Suffers - Baby's All Right
April 21, 2018 - Brooklyn

The Suffers are Houston's award-winning 8-piece ensemble that have redefined the sound of Gulf Coast Soul. Established in 2011, The Suffers' lineup was curated by bassist Adam Castaneda and vocalist/keyboardist Pat Kelly, who brought on trumpet player Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, guitarist Kevin Bernier, percussionist Jose "Chapy" Luna, and drummer/vocalist Nick Zamora, while frontwoman Kam Franklin topped off the group with soaring vocals. The last two years have brought the band to new heights, as they played 300+ shows across North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, visited NPR in Washington, DC for a Tiny Desk Concert, made their national television debut on Late Show With David Letterman, and released their highly anticipated self-titled album alongside performances on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel Live! In a short time, the band has progressed from packing Houston venues to accepting invitations for featured performances at Hangout Music Festival, Forecastle Festival, Electric Forest Festival, Afropunk, Pemberton Music Festival, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, High Water Festival, XPoNential Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Lan... Phony Ppl - Blue Note Late Night Residency Vol. 2 - Blue Note Jazz Club
April 21, 2018 - New York

Phony Ppl either crash-landed from the past or the future: critics and fans can't decide. Since throwing warehouse shows around New York in 2011, the five Brooklyn natives have tossed together vintage astral funk, soulful complex R&B, and dusted-out hip-hop which evokes a newfound genre-less form of music originating in the basement of a Bedford-Stuyvesant home studio where the band begin making music together in high school. Co-founded by lead vocalist Elbee Thrie and keyboardist Aja Grant, whose brother Bari is the bassist, the band self-released hits like "Why iii Love the Moon" which is featured in EA Sports' NBA Live 16 and "End of the Night," and was praised by none other than Tyler the Creator as one of his favorite songs of 2016. The dynamic quintet also features Elijah Rawk on guitar and drummer Matthew Byas. Together they have been direct support on tours with like-minded experimental performers Theophilus London, Erykah Badu and The Roots. Their most recent effort, 2015's "Yesterday's Tomorrow" gained rotation on BBC1 and Odd Future Radio, and the L.A. Times applauded it's "meteoric rise" via social media, with the album peaking at #6 on the iTunes R&B chart. The band is... (read more)

Turkuaz Gives You Wings (A Special Tribute to Paul Mccartney and Wings) - Brooklyn Bowl
April 22, 2018 - Brooklyn

They've become one of Brooklyn's freshest exports - nine charismatic men and women brightly outfitted to have their colorful nature match their expressive voice. Turkuaz is a rock band at its core that blends soulful sounds with potent funk grooves. Since hitting the road in 2012, Turkuaz have released a handful of albums, canvassed the US more times over, and continue to gather devoted listeners along the way. A quickly addictive pulse coupled with a reputation for their trademark "Powerfunk" sound has earned steadily growing attention across the nation. Just over the past two years, the band has made impactful appearances at Bonnaroo, Red Rocks, Lock'n, Mountain Jam, and have been filling rooms coast to coast from Terminal 5 in New York to The Fillmore in San Francisco. Drawing from the conventions that have ignited their existence and using that spark to forge its own sword, Turkuaz is a band that will make anyone move to their familiar beat, yet stay intrigued by an ability to explore its own complex character comprised of nine striking personalities.

Why Don't We - PlayStation Theater
Through April 22, 2018 - New York

Kevin Morby - The Bowery Ballroom
Through April 22, 2018 - New York

City Music is an airplane descending over frozen lakes into Chicago. City Music is riding the Q Train out to Coney Island to smell the ocean and a morning in Philadelphia where greats cranes reconfigure the buildings like an endless puzzle. City Music is a quiet afternoon moment on a bench in Baltimore, a highway in Seattle at night where the distant houses look like tiny flames and a bottle of red wine being drained on a bridge in Paris. City Music is a bus pulling into St. Louis at dawn where the arch looks like a metal rainbow reflecting the days early sunlight.... City Music is also the new album by Kevin Morby. Full of listless wanderlust, it's a collection inspired by and devoted to the metropolitan experience across America and beyond by a songwriter cast from his own mould. As he puts it: "It is a mix-tape, a fever dream, a love letter dedicated to those cities that I cannot get rid of, to those cities that are all inside of me." His fourth album, City Music works as a counterpart to Morby's acclaimed 2016 release Singing Saw, an autobiographical set that reflected the solitude and landscape in which it was recorded. It was imagined as "an old bookshelf with a young ... (read more)
