Can't Swim, Homesafe, Save Face, Small Talks - Knitting Factory
February 15, 2019 - Brooklyn

Based out of Keansburg New Jersey, Can't Swim was founded by singer Chris LoPorto in the spring of 2015. After spending most of his life playing drums in various bands, Chris decided to step in to song writing. The songs were contagious from the start and grabbed the attention of his good friends Mike Sanchez, Danny Rico, and Greg McDevitt. Rock band from Chicago. New EP 'EVERMORE' out NOW! Small Talks was started by Myrtle Beach-native, Cayley Spivey, with a few acoustic songs she wrote in her bedroom and an idea. One of these songs became the band's first single, "New Dork Pity," written by Spivey at age 16. Those songs and ideas eventually grew into a full-fledged band with the addition of Justin Charette on drums and Kenny Kelly on bass. Justin became a friend of Cayley's in middle school after they met at a concert and reconnected years later when Justin first heard a recording of Cayley's songs.

Royal Trux Wolf Eyes - Terminal 5
February 15, 2019 - New York

In the 1990's Royal Trux established themselves as one of the greatest rock groups of that hallowed era. With albums of extrasensory scope ranging from 1990s Twin Infinitives (which belongs to the special category of albums whose impact may take decades to be measured), to 1993's Cats and Dogs (with its seamless blend of classic roots, grunge, and punk) to 2000's Pound for Pound (inhabiting a well-worn coat of southern hard-rock boogie), they reinvented the group concept born with the Rolling Stones (whose music inspired the duo with a definitive template with which to fuck), accepting nothing less than "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll band" as an opening proposition! Jennifer Herrema (vocals, moog, guitar, melodica, sticks and stones, pots and pans) and Neil Hagerty (vocals and guitarist) were both in the Washington, D.C. area where they met and, as teenagers, formed Royal Trux while living in an abandoned warehouse space near the New York Avenue bridge a few miles from Union Station. The name was an evocation of their omnidirectional headspace and abilities — plus, Jennifer grew up skateboarding, moving to roller skating after removing the trux and wheels off her board graft... Clyde Lawrence, 24, and Gracie Lawrence, 21, have been writing songs and listening to countless Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, and Aretha Franklin records together in the living room of their family's New York City apartment since they were little kids. After years of playing together, they officially created Lawrence, an eight-pi... (read more)

Railroad Earth - The Capitol Theatre
February 16, 2019 - Port Chester

There's a great scene in The Last Waltz – the documentary about The Band's final concert – where director Martin Scorsese is discussing music with drummer/singer/mandolin player Levon Helm. Helm says, "If it mixes with rhythm, and if it dances, then you've got a great combination of all those different kinds of music: country, bluegrass, blues music, show music…" To which Scorsese, the inquisitive interviewer, asks, "What's it called, then?" "Rock & roll!" Clearly looking for a more specific answer, but realizing that he isn't going to get one, Marty laughs. "Rock & roll…" Well, that's the way it is sometimes: musicians play music, and don't necessarily worry about where it gets filed. It's the writers, record labels, managers, etc., who tend to fret about what "kind" of music it is. And like The Band, the members of Railroad Earth aren't losing sleep about what "kind" of music they play – they just play it. When they started out in 2001, they were a bunch of guys interested in playing acoustic instruments together. As Railroad Earth violin/vocalist Tim Carbone recalls, "All of us had been playing in various projects for years, and many of us had played together in different p... (read more)

Magic Sword - Saint Vitus
February 16, 2019 - Brooklyn

Ages ago, the immortal Dark One was freed from his prison. Since that time, the forces of good have been searching for the Light, the Chosen One to force him back into his cell. The key to this prison is the Magic Sword. Wielded by the proper soul, it will put the universe back in proper balance. The Keeper of the Magic Sword is an old soul who searches endlessly for the Chosen One. With the help of other immortals, The Seer and The Weaver, they are ever trying to stem the tide of the Great Shadow from engulfing all life. When the need is great, they appear with the Magic Sword and a high stakes proposition for those who are pure of heart, perpetually hoping that their search is finally over. The hope is that one day soon one of those who wield the Magic Sword will in fact be the Chosen One, and the enormous power they wield from the Sword will be immeasurably amplified and drive the Shadowbringer back into his cage. Until that fateful day, The Dreadlords of the Nameless One continue to call forth the power of evil and destroy all that is pure and decent in the world with the malevolent forces of Darkness.

Cherry Glazerr - The Bowery Ballroom
February 16, 2019 - New York

Cherry Glazerr released their explosive full-length album Apocalipstick on Inauguration Day in 2017. You might think the two tumultuous years since would have driven the band toward even more explicitly topical commentary. But as singer/guitarist/founder Clementine Creevy began writing the first of some thirty songs that would make up the new Stuffed & Ready, she found unexpected inspiration by turning inward. That meant leading her band somewhere new and writing songs that would reveal aspects of herself she realized she'd once concealed. Apocalipstick sizzled with Creevy's confidence, vision and fiercely idiosyncratic personality. Stuffed & Ready announces Creevy as a songwriter newly tempered and strengthened by coming to terms with her own uncertainty confusion and anger. It's her go-for-broke honesty that gives Stuffed & Ready its power and gravity. "I am telling my story of how I feel and where I am in life," she says. "I'm exploring my own self-doubt. I'm confused about what happiness is and I'm searching for my place in the world. With Apocalipstick, I was an over-confident teenager trying to solve the world's problems. With Stuffed & Ready, I'm a much more weary and perhap... (read more)

St. Paul & The Broken Bones - The Capitol Theatre
February 17, 2019 - Port Chester

Blood is thicker than water, and it can leave scars. But like it or not, those in our bloodlines are stuck with us—and us with them—for better or for worse. Paul Janeway understands this conundrum of heritage well. The singer of the Birmingham, Alabama–based rock and roll soul band St. Paul & The Broken Bones was born and raised in America's Deep South, a place where social consciousness can still take a backseat to unsavory traditions and where a family's expectations sometimes supersede all else. Despite the fierce familial love, he enjoyed and constantly gave back while growing up—especially to his father and grandfather—from an early age Janeway realized that the way he thought about the world was a little different from those around him, and he began to seek an outlet from which to share what was in his heart and on his mind. Blessed with a powerful voice, a magnetism for connecting with people, and a gift for making music, he traded in a career in ministry to start his own band. "I've always been the artsy weirdo in the family," Janeway says. "I'm liberal, a blue dot in a very red part of the world. When you're from Alabama you have to go out of your way to make people under... (read more)
