Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom: My Story of the 1965 Selma March - The Riverside Theatre
Through January 20, 2019 - New York

A powerful story of the ordinary people who made the Civil Rights Movement succeed--proof that anyone can make history and no one is too young." -Theater Development Fund, New York City Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom tells the moving, true story of Lynda Blackmon, the youngest person to walk all the way from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on the Voting Rights March in 1965. Jailed nine times before her 15th birthday, Lowery fought alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to secure the right to vote for African Americans. Exactly one year before his April 4, 1968 assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood in The Riverside Church before a crowd of over three thousand to deliver his "Beyond Vietnam" address against the sins of poverty, racism, and militarism. In 1985, the Riverside Church congregation voted to rename the southern wing of the building The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Wing—The Riverside Theatre is housed in this wing. The church and the theatre in turn are dedicated beacons of activism and social justice and have been so since their founding.

Trevor Paglen in Conversation with Matthew Israel - 92Y
January 22, 2019 - Upper East Side

Trevor Paglen, the recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant and the subject of two mid-career surveys at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, is one of the most highly acclaimed and provocative artists working today. While completing a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California, Berkeley, Paglen saw redacted portions of a Mojave Desert map and was motivated to start photographing classified military installations with cameras outfitted for capturing space. Since then, Paglen has been focused on "showing what invisibility looks like" and documenting how humans have transformed the world, and how these changes have transformed humanity. His current work explores the new realm of "invisible pictures" that have resulted from facial recognition software, self-driving cars, and social media. Paglen's footage of NSA bases was included in Citizenfour, Laura Poitras's 2014 Academy Award-winning documentary about Edward Snowden, and Paglen frequently travels to speak about his work and to discuss how secrecy 'nourishes the worst excesses of power." Join him in conversation with art historian Matthew

Stephanie Land: Maid - Books are Magic
January 23, 2019 - Brooklynl

While the gap between upper middle-class Americans and the working poor widens, grueling low-wage domestic and service work--primarily done by women--fuels the economic success of the wealthy. Stephanie Land worked for years as a maid, pulling long hours while struggling as a single mom to keep a roof over her daughter's head. In Maid, she reveals the dark truth of what it takes to survive and thrive in today's inequitable society. While she worked hard to scratch her way out of poverty as a single parent, scrubbing the toilets of the wealthy, navigating domestic labor jobs, higher education, assisted housing, and a tangled web of government assistance, Stephanie wrote. She wrote the true stories that weren't being told. The stories of overworked and underpaid Americans. Written in honest, heart-rending prose and with great insight, Maid explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them. "I'd become a nameless ghost," Stephanie writes. With this book, she gives voice to the "servant" worker, those who fight daily to scramble and scrape by for their own lives and the lives of their children.

To celebrate this new offering we're having a party on Wednesday, January 23 and are inviting you to get into the pintxo spirt! Your $30 ticket will include two hours of endless tastings of Chef's pintxos (think traditional Spanish ham and cheeses, octopus, cuttlefish with sofrito, and braised short rib and mashed potatoes) and Happy Hour pricing on all of our traditional Basque beverages (two beers, wine, and cider). The End of the World with Josh Clark, or How I Learned to Start Worrying and Love Humanity - The Bell House
January 24, 2019 - Brooklyn

This event is 21 and over Have you wondered how humanity might go extinct? Nuclear war? Climate change? Both would be really bad for us, sure. You can even imagine that they might kill off 99% of everyone alive. Again, bad. But there's a big difference between 99% extinct and fully, totally 100% extinct - so much of a difference that when you lay it out, losing that last 1% of humanity is much, much worse than the first 99% dying. Why? Because humanity has a bright, long future ahead and if we accidentally wipe ourselves out then we lose that future too. It just so happens that we are entering a time when the chances of accidentally wiping ourselves out are greater than ever. The technology we're beginning to dabble in but don't fully understand - AI, biotech, nanotech, high-energy physics experiments - these will be the very things that advance our civilization headlong into that bright future. If we can survive figuring out how they work. Join Stuff You Should Know podcaster Josh Clark for an eye-opening (eye-popping, really) exploration of existential risks, those reasons why we humans might not be around anymore a hundred or so years from now.

Tampons, Tears and Triumphs (Ttt) - The Peoples Improv Theater
January 24, 2019 - New York

Exciting news. We're inviting you to one big girly sleepover, where you share weird secrets about your body and let out all your feelings. Except, it's from 9:30-10:30, and guys can come. And we think the invitation is long overdue. There are SO many things that women go through with cheesy grins on our faces like nothing's happening! That's what we're expected to do, isn't it? Because if we complain about it, or cry about it, or really say anything about it, we're just being "girls." Welp, F that noise. This storytelling and show is an open conversation about the things we usually hide – FINALLY – cause the painfully real stuff is the funny stuff. Come share your stories, and we'll improvise off of them and share ours. Together, we'll triumph.

Juliet Lapidos: Talent - Books are Magic
January 24, 2019 - Brooklynl

In this wickedly funny debut, a young graduate student writing about-and desperately searching for-inspiration stumbles upon it in the unlikeliest of places. Anna Brisker is a twenty-nine-year-old graduate student in English at Collegiate University who can't seem to finish her dissertation. Her project: an intellectual history of inspiration. As Anna's adviser is quick to remind her, time is running out. She needs the perfect case study to anchor her thesis-and she needs it now. Amid this mounting pressure, Anna strikes up a tenuous friendship with the niece of the famous author Frederick Langley. Freddy wrote three successful books as a young man, then published exactly nothing for the rest of his wayward, hermetic life. Critics believe Freddy suffered from an acute case of writer's block, but his niece tells Anna that there's more to the story: When he died, he was at work on something new.

Aunty - United Photo Industries
Through January 31, 2019 - Brooklyn

African Women in the Frame, 1870 to the Present Selections from The McKinley Collection Curated by Catherine E. McKinley & Laylah Amatullah Barrayn Aunty!, opening on November 15 at the United Photo Industries Gallery in Brooklyn, features a trove of original archival, vintage, and contemporary images from the The McKinley Collection, a repository of rare, original images ranging from portraiture to cartes de visite, spanning the African continent from Morocco to South Africa, Guinea to Kenya, Madagascar to Benin, from the 1870s to now. The artist's magnum opus was last shown in the city at Dia Center for the Arts, 548 West 22nd Street, in 1987. To the People of New York City is a multipartite group of paintings whose palette is derived from the colors of the German flag and titled, posthumously, from a dedication that Palermo inscribed on the backs of the metal panels. The work is part of the artist's Metal Pictures series (or Metallbilder, in German), which he started while in New York City from 1973 to 1976.
