Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. THE WOLVES is a portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. Originally produced by The Playwrights Realm in association with New York Stage & Film and Vassar's Powerhouse Theatre season, THE WOLVES first burst upon the scene last year winning rave reviews. "A thrilling debut play. First-rate ensemble acting and theater that keeps you on the edge of your seat," exclaimed The New York Times. New York (Vulture) described THE WOLVES as "An astonishing new play. Extraordinary." And Variety called it "Exhilarating," adding "directed with virtuosity by Lila Neugebauer, the ensemble work is astonishing – acting teamwork of the highest order." In addition to being a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the production won an Obie Ensemble Award shared by director Neugebauer and the acting ensemble, a special Drama Desk Award for its acting ensemble, and was nominated fo... Early Show The Seb Isaac Band, The Nectars - Mercury Lounge
January 07, 2018 - New York

The Seb Isaac Band The Nectars Conceived in the shadow of New York City late 2016, some 20 miles west of its lavish neon clutches, The Nectars climbed out of the tangled New Jersey suburbs and into the local alternative rock consciousness. Still under a year since inception, they've already mercilessly plundered local studios for free recording time, creating over 10 tracks, shooting three videos and turning down early record label interest. They do things their way. The Nectars' punk inflamed guitars, inventive harmonic motion, trashy beats and raw vocals lay a foundation influenced by EDM, funk and scorching live performance. Their approach harks back to the punk / pop scene New York circa 1975 but brings a modernity of sound and approach that only new millennial techno creatives can lay claim to.

In the spring of 2017, DEDE announced she had signed as a solo artist to the forward-thinking Fresh Selects label, with the Pitchfork premiere of her first single, "Faultline" – a duet with Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear, produced by Kingdom of Fade To Mind. Stereogum called the track "a dreamy, dreary ballad — bleak but beautiful, pained and pulsing" and Pigeons & Planes named it one of The Best Songs Of The Month. Her second single, "Golden Divine" was featured heavily in James Franco's film "King Cobra" and had its premiere on LA's KCRW. Cao Yu's early 20th-century drama Thunderstorm, regarded as a masterpiece in Chinese theater, is dismantled and reassembled in this new interpretation helmed by internationally acclaimed director Wang Chong. Using real-time video editing and sound mixing from action occurring on stage, a hypnotic, near-silent movie unfolds to tell the explicit story of two female characters discovering that they have been cheated on by the same womanizing playboy. Updating the story to a Beijing official's home in the 1990s, Wang and his company of Beijing performers reinvent the classic play to reflect the complexities of contemporary capitalist-communist society, the ubiquity of technology and the sex-obsessed global landscape. Chong incorporates live pingtan players, a centuries-old form of traditional Chinese musical storytelling, to create the dialogue and soundtrack onstage. Performed in Chinese with English supertitles Co-presented by The Public Theater's Under the Radar Festival and NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts Support for this presentation of THUNDERSTORM 2.0 was provided by the Asian Cultural Council. What was a decent meal to a Roman soldier, farmer, or senator? Did the Romans really eat dormice, and did they really relieve themselves in a "vomitorium" afterwards? Find out at Pass the Flamingo! We'll sample recreated Roman delicacies, play a game of Name That Spice, and examine art, archaeology and literature to uncover the Roman love affair with food. Host Andrew Coletti is an educator who has consumed everything from duck brains to Mesopotamian barley beer. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Classics from Bard College and a Masters in Museum Education from Bank Street College of Education. The Suitcase Junket - Mercury Lounge
January 11, 2018 - New York

The Suitcase Junket is Matt Lorenz: artist, tinkerer, swamp yankee, one-man band. His is the road-worn voice rising over the grind of a tube-amped dumpster guitar, with wild double pitches of throat singing. From The Suitcase Junket's penchant for thrift and ingenuity comes this full-length album -- his debut at Signature Sounds -- of original rock anthems, mountain ballads, blues manifestos and dance-hall festivity, played on instruments built of broken bottles, twisted forks, dried bones, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, a toy keyboard, and an overhead compartment's worth of luggage. Kate Lorenz has been singing ever since she learned to talk. An avid lover of classic rock and motown, she started off by singing what she heard on mix tapes and in her parents' vinyl collection and cut her teeth on the blues while studying abroad playing with a pub band in Ireland.

The Nude Party Insecure Men, Zzzwalk - Mercury Lounge
January 11, 2018 - New York

The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable… until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, fe... (read more)

Lauren Kinhan: A Sleepin' Bee - Sheen Center
January 11, 2018 - New York

Whether on her own highly-acclaimed albums, as a 25-year member of the beloved vocal group New York Voices, or as co-founder of two diverse and inventive supergroups, Moss and JaLaLa, singer/songwriter Lauren Kinhan has always forged her own path as a performer, composer and improviser. With her latest, A Sleepin' Bee, Kinhan once again steers herself in unexpected directions with a new release that is at once the first all-standards collection of her career, a loving tribute to legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, and unmistakably a Lauren Kinhan album – with all the unique perspective and idiosyncratic personality that has come to imply. The concert will be preceded by a 7 pm - Pre Show Talk with iconic recording engineer Elliot Scheiner (25 Grammy nominations), Lauren, and arranger Andy Ezrin, and the screening of footage from the "Making Of A Sleepin' Bee."

January 11, 2018 - Brooklyn

Karl Blau New Album Out Her Space Out 11/17 On Bella Union Ahead of the release of his new forthcoming album Out Her Space, which is due out November, 17th, 2017 through Bella Union, Karl Blau is please to share new track "Beckon". Collaborating alongside a number of musicians from Matthew E. White's Spacebomb label as his backing band, you can listen to the track HERE. Sequestered away in rural bliss, 90 minutes north of Seattle on the Washington state coast, Karl Blau has been making records for 20 years, but never with European distribution. So, when Bella Union released Introducing Karl Blau in 2015, it shone a belated and deserved light on "one of the great hidden treasures of music," claimed album producer Tucker Martine. But given Introducing's specific agenda - a set of gorgeous, lush cover versions drawing mostly on vintage Nashville's country-soul with Blau concentrating on his rich, reverberating voice – his latest album Out Her Space is so different that it could be titled Reintroducing Karl Blau. Out Her Space features Blau's own material, production and multi-instrumental skills, and forges a gorgeous, languid and hook-infested gumbo of soul, funk, some jazzy... (read more)

José James official site | José James on Facebook | José James on Twitter | José James on Instagram | José James on YouTube Celebrating the eightieth birth year of the legendary R&B singer songwriter, Blue Note recording artist José James presents "Lean On Me: José James celebrates Bill Withers." Vetted personally by Mr. Withers himself, the show is an exploration of the deep musical catalogue that touched millions of hearts and united communities worldwide. Featuring Withers' top ten hits as well as his soul ballads and rare grooves, James brings both a deep musical appreciation and a contemporary approach to songs such as "Ain't No Sunshine," "Hope She'll Be Happier," and "Just the Two of Us." Fittingly, James has assembled a truly all star cast of musicians: Nate Smith on drums, Ben Williams on bass, Sullivan Fortner on keys and Brad Allen Williams on guitar. José James on the project: We've lost a lot of phenomenal musicians over the last few years. David Bowie, Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen, Prince. That combined with the insanity of our current world events made me want to focus on our living genius and positive energy as a people. I've been drawn to Bill Withers' music f... (read more)

Anderson East, Js Ondara - The Bowery Ballroom
Through January 12, 2018 - New York

Anderson East Anderson East is the humble type -- the sort of man who chalks up his success to loads of good fortune. But the singer-songwriter has earned his accolades: one of music's most compelling young artists, East is an unflinching and inimitable talent. Best exemplified on his breakout 2015 debut album, Delilah, the Alabama-native wields an unwavering and potent, ever-husky voice. And as seen on standout tracks including "Satisfy Me" and "Devil In Me," he's able to effortlessly spin tales of tumult and triumph in equal measure. That's of course to say nothing of the brute force with which the man performs — fiery and forceful, as much a wily preacher as a patient poet, East has become one of music's must-see live act. Having recently completed a forthcoming new album with producer Dave Cobb at Nashville's famed RCA Studio A, and preparing to release its first single later this summer, East is hitting the road this summer with Chris Stapleton on the singer's "All-American Road Show." What NPR Music called a " …eclectic, fully formed debut album," Delilah was East's launching pad. But he's hardly slowed down since: over the previous two years, the gritty-blues and-soul-... B – the Underwater Bubble Show - St George Theatre
Through January 12, 2018 - New York

Inspired by childhood standards like Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan, B – The Underwater Bubble Show is a modern fairy tale with one major twist. "Each classic tale represents a journey of a kid who grows up and learns something," explains co-creator and director Enrico Pezzoli." We wanted a story about an adult character who discovers that he can still go back and enjoy life. We don't always need to grow up. Sometimes we need to step backwards for a bit and restart." The show follows Mr. B, a creature of modern habits who "always feels pressed by a thousand things to do in a world that seems to be moving too fast. "The office worker discovers a little aquarium that appears like magic inside his briefcase and gradually becomes enchanted by the wondrous underwater world of Bubblelandia, which is full of seahorses, dragon fish, starfish, mermaids and other creatures. "Mr. B represents each of us" Pezzoli notes. "His transformation is a journey which each of us could take "only if…" Everyone dreams about the possibilities of taking a break to sit, relax and simply daydream." Taking cues from Cirque du Soleil, the visually spectacular show incorporates the... (read more)

Late Show The Red Party, Winkie, Dj Sean Templar, Dj Jarek Zelazny, Johanna Constantine - Mercury Lounge
January 13, 2018 - New York

The Red Party Winkie What began as a film scoring project and alias, WINKIE (the name lifted straight out of a scene in a David Lynch movie) evolved into an actual 'band' when the two realized that they were still writing songs after the credits rolled. And those songs became the band's first album "One Day We Pretended to Be Ghosts" which was mastered by Oliver Ackermann of A Place To Bury Strangers and released in 2013. The sold out limited release was a best seller at Norman Records and received support from KXLU's Part Time Punks, DKFM, WFKU and WFMU. They've shared stages with Xeno & Oaklander, Vaniish, Pill, LODRO, Vowws (LA), Parlor Walls, Bloodsound, ohnomoon, and DOOMSQUAD. In March 2015, Winkie contributed a track to the well-received "Leave Them All Behind — A Tribute To Ride" which also included covers by Oliver Ackermann and Ceremony. And now this New York based duo are back to follow up their remarkable debut with a new album that assure us the best road traveled is always the bleakest one. For their second ride they've enlisted the help of The Icarus Line's Joe Cardamone who knows a thing or two about driving straight into the eye of a storm. The band's soun... (read more)

Pursuit of Happiness Nature Theater of Oklahoma & Enknapgroup - NYU Skirball
Through January 14, 2018 - New York

OBIE-Award winning, New York-based performance group Nature Theater of Oklahoma takes on the American Dream and the bleak desert of its aspirational aftermath. Created in collaboration with six dancers of the highly acclaimed Slovenian dance company EnKnapGroup, the piece charges through a rough-and-tumble, endlessly morphing myth of the Wild West, where whiskey pours, fists fly, and bullets ultimately settle the score. Through hyper-masculine high jinks and disruptions of submissive stereotypes this fast-paced, entertaining and affecting piece careens towards a shocking and unseemly Hollywood end. With a brief detour to Baghdad, this raucous dance-theater performance hybrid travels from the dark corners into which we collectively chase our wildest dreams to the anarchic frontiers of lust, greed and violent means to examine the "unalienable right" to happiness. The programme of EN-KNAP Productions is financially supported by: City of Ljubljana – Department of Culture and Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. An EN-KNAP Production PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS is co-produced by Théâtre de la Ville and steirischer herbst. The project is supported by U.S. Embassy in Lju... (read more)
