The album themes of despair and isolation are delivered by the unlikely pairing of the Body's signature heaviness and 80s dance tracks. The Body can emote pain like no other band, and their ability to move between the often strict confines of the metal world and the electronic music sphere is on full display throughout No One Deserves Happiness, an album that eludes categorization. The Rethinking Animals Summit 2019 - SVA Theatre
Through September 15, 2019 - New York

The Rethinking Animals Summit brings together thought leaders from around the world around our unsustainable treatment of other species and the consequences to ourselves and the planet. The nature of our relationship with other species has enormous and quantifiable impacts on our health, on the environment, global security, our economies, and the viability of the world that our children will inherit. Furthermore, the nature of our relationships to other species and their environments have qualitative moral, ethical and psychological implications for us as civil society and as individuals. We cannot afford to ignore the need to change our perceptions of the importance of other species in our lives, nor the need to reconsider the nature of our dominion over theirs. The care, protection, and conservation of animals world-wide touches all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals, and if the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to be successful, it is imperative that other species be considered in its implementation.

Reclaiming Patriotism - 92nd Street Y
September 18, 2019 - New York

Join Etzioni for a discussion of his new book in which he calls for nothing less than a social transformation—led by a new social movement—to save our world's democracies, currently under threat in today's volatile and profoundly divided political environments. The United States, along with scores of other nations, has seen disturbing challenges to the norms and institutions of our democratic society, particularly in the rise of exclusive forms of nationalism and populism. Focusing on nations as the core elements of global communities, Etzioni envisions here a patriotic movement that rebuilds rather than splits communities and nations. Beginning with moral dialogues that seek to find common ground in our values and policies, Etzioni sets out a path toward cultivating a "good" form of nationalism based on this shared understanding of the common good. Working to broaden civic awareness and participation, this approach seeks to suppress neither identity politics nor special interests in its efforts to lead us to work productively with others.

Chakra Balancing Meditation - CRS (Center for Remembering No Sharing)
September 18, 2019 - New York

As a group, we tone the sacred sounds of each chakra 7 times, creating an energetic flow that loosens and removes blockages and releases negative energy stored within. The sound of the toning creates a vibrational reaction within the body, which causes stillness and relaxation. We begin with a breathing exercise, followed by toning, and ending with an open circle to share the experience and/or ask questions. This is a meditation, and a self-healing practice. Chakra balancing meditation is excellent for the beginner and the experienced. We all have seven main chakras that sit along the center of the spinal column. The body is a vehicle of consciousness, and the chakras are where consciousness and matter (the physical body) meet. Together the seven chakras form a profound formula for wholeness that integrates mind, body and spirit. Making sure they are balanced is essential to our daily and long term lives. They house the consciousness around our survival and safety, emotions, sexulaity, creativity, self-esteem, imagination, our knowingness, our ability to love and be loved. Emotions such as fear, stress, shame, guilt, grief, lies and the ego all block the chakras creating an imbal... (read more)

Steve Huffman is the co-founder and CEO of Reddit, the "front page of the internet" and fourth most visited site in the U.S. He is also the co-founder and former CEO of Hipmunk, the popular online travel company. Raised in northern Virginia, Huffman pursued his passion for programming from an early age and followed it through a computer science degree at the University of Virginia. In 2005, he and his college roommate Alexis Ohanian pitched their first start-up to then-new incubator Y Combinator. While the pair's initial idea for a food-ordering mobile app called My Mobile Menu was rejected, Y Combinator founder Paul Graham invited them to build a new startup, which soon led to their creation of Reddit. After selling the company in 2006, Huffman launched Hipmunk and was named to Inc. Magazine's "30 Under 30" list in 2011 and the Forbes "30 Under 30" list in 2012. A few years later, Huffman returned as CEO of Reddit, where he has led the company's development of native image and video hosting, a new mobile app, and a full site redesign while growing the Reddit community to over 330 million monthly users. In addition to his work at Reddit, Huffman is a mentor at Hackbright Academy, ... (read more)

After we'll enjoy social time with tea and snacks. The participation fee is $20 with advanced registration and $25 at the door. Direct registration link: https://bit.ly/2Lcbtws Through whirling, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance, to be dizzy, to surrender control as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power, the still center within, around which we turn, that we may share our divine strength and bear witness to the divinity in others. If you are quiet and in a state of prayer when you Turn, offering everything of yourself to God, then when your body is spinning, there is a completely still point in the center… The heavens respond; and all the invisible kingdoms joi... Their ultra-melodic songs aren't afraid to get a little dark. With vocalist Caroline Landahl the band has a singer who can go beyond bittersweet and dive deep into real sadness when the need arises.

Hidden in Plain Sight: Secrets in the Age of Transparency - Books are Magic
September 20, 2019 - Cobble Hill

Secrets have always been crucial to storytelling. But now, in an era of all-revealing autofiction, WikiLeaks, presidential hush money, and #MeToo, there's been a shift in how we perceive hidden information—how it reflects truth and what it shows us about who we are. Drawing from Bookforum's special summer issue, the panelists will consider how authors think about secrets today: Does sharing them bring us closer to truth? Or is oversharing just another means of hiding? Featuring Christian Lorentzen, Minna Zallman Proctor, and Rachel Syme. Moderated by Bookforum editor Michael Miller.

Inequality and Climate Change: The Double Threat to Life on Earth - Brooklyn Bridge Park
Through September 22, 2019 - Brooklyn

Through the work of global photographers, UNDP brings into focus the intertwined threat of rising inequality and climate change. The twin threats of climate change and rising inequality are challenging and unprecedented obstacles for our world. And they are deeply intertwined. While almost no one will be immune to the increasingly savage effects of a heating planet, it's the poor who are going to suffer most. Inequality is a paradox of our times; in recent decades innovation has exploded, poverty has gone down, and emerging markets are booming. Yet we still see widening and unprecedented gaps between haves and have nots. These glaring discrepancies are not only unfair, they are dangerous. They undermine our political systems, human rights, peace and security, and a sustainable future. And inequality has a powerful accomplice in climate change. It is a cruel irony that the poorest who have done the least to heat the planet, suffer first, and the most, from the consequences. Holding a mirror to the two threats tha... (read more)

As our signature gathering, the 2019 Concordia Annual Summit will provide a powerful forum to catalyze action through shared value approaches and social impact objectives.
