As we mark two years since the United Nations announced their Sustainable Development Goals for high-quality, inclusive education for all, join experts to find out how we can achieve this by encouraging local stakeholders to benefit from the knowledge and experience of global stakeholders. Lunchtime Lecture Series 'ABC (Always be Composing)' With Ephraim Rubenstein - The Art Students League
September 20, 2017 - New York

"The four edges of your canvas are the first four lines of your composition"- Hans Hofmann Composition – the organization of shapes and rhythms on a flat surface – is one of the great tools we have in painting. Much touted 'rules' of composition seem so problematic, as they are always riddled with innumerable exceptions. More profitable, perhaps, are 'strategies' for thinking about composition. Ephraim Rubenstein has had eleven one-person exhibitions in New York, at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, Tatistcheff & Co. and most recently at George Billis Gallery in Chelsea. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Rubenstein was Associate Professor of Art at the University of Richmond from 1987-1998, where he received the Distinguished Educator Award and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art and is currently on the faculty at Columbia University and the Art Students League of New York.

EILEEN MARKEY: THE ASSASSINATION OF SR. MAURA - Glucksman Ireland House NYU
September 21, 2017 - New York

Sr. Maura Clarke, MM was one of four American women, three of them nuns, assassinated in El Salvador on December 2, 1980. Their identification with a poor people's movement for land reform and human rights had put them in the cross-hairs of a government intent on eliminating dissent. Across two decades of service in Central America Maura came to support popular movements against dictatorial regimes first in Nicaragua and then in El Salvador. As a child growing up in Rockaway, NY in the 1930s and 40s Maura ingested her father's stories of the IRB, the Irish Revolution and the Civil War and her mother's tales of the discrimination and intimidation she faced growing up Catholic in Antrim. Maura drank in the songs of brave rebels and beloved martyrs. These shaped her ideas about freedom, liberation and rebellion, priming her understanding of the movements of which she was a part in Central America. Eileen Markey, author of A Radical Faith: The Assassination of Sr. Maura (Nation Books 2016) explores Maura's Irish inheritance and its impact on her work a world away.

Caborca: Distant Star [WORLD PREMIERE] - Abron Arts Center
September 23, 2017 - Lower East Side

The year is 1973. In Chile, a group of young poets meet to write, argue, critique and flirt. Days later, the government collapses and the president is shot. Amidst the brutality, one poet rises to fame as a skywriting daredevil—and, possibly, as a killer. An eerily relevant drama unfolds in Brooklyn-based theater company Caborca's adaptation of Roberto Bolaño's novel Distant Star, a harrowing tale of fascism and its aftermath. The work, directed and co-conceived by Shira Milikowsky, weaves the author's memories of life (and death) under Pinochet's American-backed dictatorship into a perverse, seductive noir of urgent political necessity.

Faustin Linyekula: in Search of Dinozord - NYU Skirball
Through September 23, 2017 - New York

Sur les traces de Dinozord (In Search of Dinozord) is an adaptation of a 2006 work that paid homage to the murdered Congolese political prisoner Antoine Vumilia Muhindo. In spoken word and solo dances, they delve into the wrenching history of the Congo, recounting legends from their childhoods and mourning the loss of a friend. Faustin Linyekula is an artist with a "live-wire intensity" (The New York Times). His riveting work often addresses themes of memory, forgetting, and dreams. With his country's history as a catalyst, he considers the impact that decades of war, trauma, and economic uncertainty have on people's lives.

September 24, 2017 - Port Washington

The themes of what Ford called his "romance of the West" are eternal: courage and integrity, compassion and redemption. Our script by Port Washington writer Patrick Lyons is based on the NBC Theater coast-to-coast radio broadcast of Jan. 9, 1949, as well as the 1939 film, which was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two Oscars, for musical score and best supporting actor. This is a volunteer community theater production. The format will be similar to a staged reading of a play; performers will work to microphones with script in hand, accompanied by live music and sound effects. 36 Bars - Museum of the Moving Image
September 24, 2017 - Astoria

2002. John Divola (b. 1949, Los Angeles. Lives and works in Los Angeles). 36 found 8x10-inch photographs, c. 1928–1933. Collection of Stéphane Samuel & Robert Rubin. In the 1980s, Los Angeles photographer John Divola began collecting photographs that were made during Hollywood productions and later discarded. The 36 photographs on exhibit here were found in a small poster shop behind a flower store on Sunset Boulevard. They had been retrieved from a dumpster by a long-time Warner Bros. employee. These incredibly detailed images, dating from circa 1928–1933 and made with 8x10 cameras, were made solely to provide records of movie sets for continuity during production. As found objects, their aesthetic beauty challenges the distinction between fine art photography and the craftsmanship of Hollywood technicians. These photographs also remind us of the power of movies to create ideas of how certain spaces should look and feel. Hollywood production designers and directors take an abstract concept—such as a bar—and realize it with great specificity. Caborca: Distant Star [WORLD PREMIERE] - Abron Arts Center
Through October 01, 2017 - Lower East Side

Meriem Bennani: Siham & Hafida - The Kitchen
Through October 21, 2017 - New York

Historically, chikha performers in Morocco have provided entertainment for important celebrations and, as significant, spread lyrics of resistance during the era of French colonization. Yet tensions have arisen as performers negotiate a globalized society propelled by personal technology. Extending Meriem Bennani's ecstatic depictions of female roles ascribed by culture, her new video offers an intimate view into the lives of Siham and Hafida, two women whose inter-generational conflicts regarding the chikha tradition reflect greater shifts in Moroccan culture of the past 50 years. Moreover, their opposition approaches point to uncanny parallels between the new presence of chikha performance on social media and the oral traditions of Aita, the musical genre of the chikha and its dances. Bennani captures the performance of femininity celebrated by social and religious mores, as well as the less constrained moments in which this performance can recede. Curated by Lumi Tan.

Note:Close on Monday Elevator Repair Service, the Obie-winning company behind Gatz — "the most remarkable achievement in theater of this decade" (The New York Times) — returns to The Public to celebrate their 25th season with a dynamic new production of Shakespeare's MEASURE FOR MEASURE. With athletic theatricality and Marx-Brothers-inspired slapstick, the ERS ensemble brings exciting new life to this story of impossible moral choices in 17th-century Vienna. Radical experiments with speed set the play's combination of the comically absurd and the tragically serious in stark relief, and deliver a remarkable new show that marries the company's unique performance style with the Bard's exquisitely lyrical language. ERS Founder and Artistic Director John Collins directs.

How has the act of remembering—and forgetting—been transformed in the digital age? Photography's relationship with the concept of memory stretches its entire history and includes its every iteration. Only now has the distribution of photography exploded with newfound ubiquity, ushering in a paradigm shift that bears semblance to that of the Gutenberg press. Photography's various forms have converged onto a point of accessibility where what was once a luxury is now a presupposition. As the degrees of separation between people decrease, so do those between past, present, and future. To remember is to engage with all three, and to create is to make them tangible. The collective consciousness of humankind speaks a visual language, and photography is poised, now more than ever, to upend the very notion of what it means to create.
