How Art Can (and Can't) Save a Place - 92nd Street Y
February 16, 2018 - New York

Art has played a central role in three wildly different communities: Fogo Island, Newfoundland, a remote fishing community in the North Atlantic; Sag Harbor; and Greenwich Village. These areas — one profoundly remote, another more suburban and the other fully urban — are so different yet share one thing. Being home to artists and the art they create has defined these communities culturally, economically and in countless other ways. We will hear from Zita Cobb, who has helped usher in an artistic and economic renaissance in Fogo Island; Eric Fischl, the celebrated painter known for capturing his native Long Island; and Adam Davidson, economics writer for The New Yorker who grew up and is on the board of Westbeth, the artist housing that helped transform the Meatpacking district of Greenwich Village. They will discuss how art can best interact with local communities, how it can be abused and what lessons their very different experiences share in common.

Daniel Salmieri: Bear and Wolf - Books are Magic
February 16, 2018 - Cobble Hill

Daniel Salmieri leads a special presentation of his first book as both author and illustrator, Bear and Wolf. They're young and curious, slipping easily into friendship as they amble along together, seeing new details in the snowy forest. Together they spy an owl overhead, look deep into the frozen face of the lake, and contemplate the fish sleeping below the surface. Then it's time to say goodbye: for Bear to go home and hibernate with the family and for Wolf to run with the pack. Daniel Salmieri's debut as author/illustrator is a beautifully rendered story of friendship and the subtle rhythm of life when we are open to the world and to each other.

Starcrawler - Rough Trade NYC
February 16, 2018 - Brooklyn

Starcrawler Starcrawler are a Los Angeles rock & roll band formed one year ago when Arrow de Wilde first met Henri Cash on the high school yard in Echo Park. The rhythm section of Austin Smith and Tim Franco came soon after, found on the streets of Hollywood. They play rock & roll music heavy and loud and their incendiary performances resemble the children of the Cramps, the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, and Alice Cooper. "Ants," a song they recorded days after first playing together, was quickly discovered by London DJ Matt Wilkinson and debuted on Apple Beats One radio just as the band were playing their first few shows. The DJ loved it so much, he played it twice in a row. Soon after, it found its way to Sir Elton John, who spun it on his "Rocket Hour" radio program, as well as to Zane Lowe, who played it to further accolades. Much media interest both from the music and fashion worlds has quickly followed. "Ants" & the forthcoming "Used to Know" are from an early session recorded by Steven McDonald (Red Kross) and document the unhinged beginnings of the group taking their first steps into the public eye. They have only now found the time to take a breath and are recording their more full... (read more)

John Stoltenberg of DC Metro Theater Arts says: "No-No Boy is an extraordinary and essential play. It's about what happened to innocent people when this country demonized and incarcerated Japanese Americans during World War II. To witness it now—as anti-Muslim rumblings are being trumped up to a roar…I can only urge everyone who cares about how theater connects to this country's past and future to catch Pan Asian Rep's No-No Boy wherever whenever you can."

February 17, 2018 - Brooklyn

Doors 8:00 pm Show 9:00 pm Now, Now With the release of "SGL", Now, Now emerge from a transformative and transitional few years since their last shows played in support of Threads. Much has changed, with the mutual and amicable departure of guitarist Jess Abbott to pursue a different creative direction through her work as Tancred being the most visibly apparent difference. That parting of ways is only a fraction of the story however. Below the surface lay challenges, struggle, and a lot of growth for KC Dalager and Brad Hale as people, musicians, and songwriters. And while as a duo they find themselves back to the same binary dynamic they started with over a decade ago, they couldn't be further from who they were when two friends who met at marching band practice and started making music together in a basement. As they wrapped up nearly three years of writing, recording, and then touring in support of Threads, KC and Brad were mentally and emotionally worn out. Poetry of Witness: 5-week poetry workshop w/ Michael Collins - Bowery Poetry Club
February 18, 2018 - New York

Discussion, Generative Writing, Workshop: 5-week poetry workshop w/ Michael Collins This workshop will meet the following Sundays: February 11, February 18, February 25, March 4, March 18 TIME/LOCATION: 12 PM – 2 PM at Bowery Poetry located at 308 Bowery INSTRUCTOR: Michael Collins The goal of this class will be to explore the craft of poetry, specifically in one of its many essential roles, bearing witness -- either by recording direct experience or through acts of compassionate imagination. I don't think I need to explain to anyone why this particular approach to poetic craft is important in our current social and political situations. In times such as these, we need more empathy for those who are "different" -- apparently, anyway -- in one way or another, from "us." We need more poets for this movement! Therefore, this class will aim to welcome newer poets with accessible lessons, invite those who have gotten out of the practice of writing to return to a writing community, and help all participants who value diverse perspectives to hone their visions into poems. Sessions will include discussion of model poems and related generative writing and guided exercises, and work... (read more)

Julia Weist with Nestor Siré: 17.(SEPT) [By WeistSiréPC]™ - Queens Museum
February 18, 2018 - Queens

For the project 17.(SEPT) [By WeistSiréPC]™, American artist Julia Weist and Cuban artist Nestor Siré explore and intervene in El Paquete Semanal or "the weekly package," a cultural and economic phenomenon that developed in Cuba in place of internet connectivity, in which a 1 terabyte digital media collection is aggregated weekly and circulated across the country via in-person file sharing. These transactions are performed between Cubans and their paqueteros or Paquete agent/guide. The centerpiece of 17.(SEPT) [By WeistSiréPC]™ is a 64 terabyte server containing 52 weeks of El Paquete Semanal, from August 2016 – August 2017. It is the only formalized archive of the Paquete and its construction and deployment was designed around the legal and logistical restrictions of the changing US-Cuba relations over the last year. From this archive, Weist and Sire have produced WeistSire PC [Matriz] (2016-2017), a catalog of Paquete content, free for visitors to the Museum to take. In order to create this "legal paquete" the artists sent thousands of emails to secure permission from copyright holders of content from the week of August 8, 2016 to make this distribution permissible according t... Admissions - Lincoln Center
Through April 29, 2018 - New York

ADMISSIONS is a new play that explodes the ideals and contradictions of liberal white America. Sherri Rosen-Mason (Jessica Hecht) is head of the admissions department at a New England prep school, fighting to diversify the student body. And alongside her husband, the school's Headmaster, they've largely succeeded in bringing a stodgy institution into the twenty-first century. But when their only son sets his sights on an Ivy League university, personal ambition collides with progressive values, with convulsive results.
