Tcf & Inigo Wilkins: Xenopoietic Deviations - ISSUE Project Room
November 17, 2017 - Brooklyn

For his third and final project as 2017 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow, DeForrest Brown Jr. presents "Xenopoietic Deviations," a radical new lecture-as-performance, composed in segments by theorist Inigo Wilkins and Berlin-based digital artist and producer Lars "TCF" Holdhus. Decomposing the multiple time-scales and levels of information processing in auditory cognition, from sub-millisecond unconscious inferences to meso-scale continuities, "Xenopoietic Deviations" is an ecstatic rendering of the subject matter of Irreversible Noise, Wilkins' forthcoming book for Urbanomic into a rapturous performance piece and lecture. Deep in the realm of synthetic abstractions, TCF and Wilkins work in conversation and across disciplines (science, philosophy, and politics as well as visual media and music) to manipulate the hypothesis space of listening. TCF uses a complex custom-built sound and image processing system based on machine learning, with multiple layers of predictive coding, sculpting sound and vision with brute force agitations. Wilkins intervenes with a vertiginous explanation of the predictive processes involved in hearing, at once stringently rational and fantastically deliri... (read more)

November 18, 2017 - New York

Morgan Bassichis adapts the underground classic The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions (1977)—an out-of-print book by Larry Mitchell, with lush illustrations by Ned Asta, that recounts a fable of radical queerness and the challenges and possibilities of communal life—in a series of three "new moon potluck theater" evenings. The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions The Musical will unfold over the course of "Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon" as an incantation grappling with histories of queer and feminist world-making. The luminary cast includes TM Davy, DonChristian Jones, Michi Osato, Una Osato, and special guests, with set design by Anna Betbeze. In Bassichis's own words, "It's like dinner theater but spiritual and can you bring some of the food? Seriously." If you would like to contribute food to the potluck, please arrive by 6:45 p.m. Morgan Bassichis (b. 1983) is a comedic performer whose shows have been described as "out there" (by Morgan's mother) and "super intense" (by Morgan). This event is currently at capacity, but a standby list will begin at 6 p.m. the day of the event. The Episcopal Church is the American member of the Anglican Communion of Churches. Anglicans, perhaps more than any other Christian group, trust the liturgy (rather than, say, theological study or a personal conversion experiences) to form them and, conversely, to express their most deeply held convictions about God, the creation, and the human person. In the coming weeks, we will explore the roots and the theology of the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. This class takes place in the Chapel of St. James after the 11 am Choral Eucharist on Sundays throughout the year, with the exception of the second Sunday of the month.

Through November 19, 2017 - Brooklyn

Meet our family of otters – our very own swimming superstars! Watch the otters playing, foraging, feeding, swimming and grooming. You'll even be able to watch them sleeping in their specially designed holt, although this species of otter is more active during the day than some of the 13 other species found worldwide. Asian short-clawed otters are the smallest otters in the world and live well together in family groups, unlike most other otters which tend to be solitary. They often play games which helps their young to develop hunting skills. Otters are a good indication of clean water and healthy wetland habitats. As they are usually at the top of the food chain, if there are problems with wetlands the otter population declines. The UK's native European otter is a conservation success story. Fifty years ago the rivers of the UK suffered from pollution by organo-chlorine pesticides and as a result otters had disappeared from almost all of the country.

How has the act of remembering—and forgetting—been transformed in the digital age? Photography's relationship with the concept of memory stretches its entire history and includes its every iteration. Only now has the distribution of photography exploded with newfound ubiquity, ushering in a paradigm shift that bears semblance to that of the Gutenberg press. Photography's various forms have converged onto a point of accessibility where what was once a luxury is now a presupposition. As the degrees of separation between people decrease, so do those between past, present, and future. To remember is to engage with all three, and to create is to make them tangible. The collective consciousness of humankind speaks a visual language, and photography is poised, now more than ever, to upend the very notion of what it means to create.

Restoring the George and Beyond: Sgr Meets Public Benefit - AIA New York | Center for Architecture
Through November 21, 2017 - New York

The George Washington Bridge, opened in 1931, has begun a $1.9-billion state-of-good-repair (SGR) program to rehabilitate the facility, scheduled to be completed in 2025. One of the principal components of this rehabilitation includes the replacement of the suspender ropes that support the bridge decks from the main cables. As a result of this program, new access paths to the bridge's main pedestrian walkways will be constructed. The challenge to respond to the SGR requirements created an opportunity to create substantial improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists who use the bridge for both passage and as a destination in its own right, as well as for the neighborhoods that interface with the access points. The presentation will illustrate how the conservation of transportation infrastructure can serve not just to maintain facilities, but to actually improve them. Speakers: Jaqueline Hanley, AIA, Principal Architect, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Signe Nielsen, RLA, FASLA, Principal, Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, P.C. Through December 12, 2017 - Brooklyn

Experiment with a range of generative writing exercises in this six week poetry workshop. Ekphrasis is the process of responding to works of art, images, media and music through written poetry. We will use this as a jumping off point to play writing games as we collaborate with each other and the space at Pioneer Works. We will also study performance of all sorts (e.g., standup comedy, performance art, virtual performances) for rhetorical insight into generating new texts. We will work by becoming totally obsessed with our chosen/divined subjects. By journaling before/in front of art with an obsessive glee, shock, and ardor, students will gain an audacious authority over their given subjects. This may lead to a high output of writing (poems) and the creation of a toolkit for creative composition. In collaborating with each other, we will dip our toes into a version of a "creative communism" that prompted Robert Rauschenberg to reflect that "ideas are not real estate." Students' poems/hybrid writing will be workshopped in small groups, during a full class workshop, and by Amy Lawless individually via written response. Readings will be drawn from poems, short stories, multimoda... (read more)

Kahlil Joseph: Shadow Play - New Museum
Through January 07, 2018 - Lower East Side

In his absorbing short films, Los Angeles–based artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph (b. 1981, Seattle, WA) conjures the lush and impressionistic quality of dreams with particular reverence for quotidian moments and intimate scenes. Music always figures centrally in Joseph's works, and sounds reverberate as vital and powerful analogues for the play of images through which he chronicles the stories and rhythms of his subjects. As much as they plumb the history of cinema and moving images, Joseph's films also find a parallel in the lyricism, complexity, and affective power of black musical traditions. In "Kahlil Joseph: Shadow Play," his first solo presentation in New York, Joseph debuts Fly Paper (2017), a new film installation that departs from his admiration of the work of Roy DeCarava (1919–2009), a photographer and artist known for his images of celebrated jazz musicians and everyday life in Harlem. With Fly Paper, Joseph extends DeCarava's virtuosity with chiaroscuro effects to the moving image and brings together a range of film and digital footage to contemplate the dimensions of past, present, and future in Harlem and New York City. Joseph's new film also touches on themes of... (read more)

ALEX DA CORTE: HARVEST MOON - New Museum
Through January 07, 2018 - Lower East Side

Drawing from the iconography of his outer-Philadelphia upbringing, Alex Da Corte (b. 1980, Camden, NJ) creates vibrant paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations that infuse everyday artifacts with symbolic power. His theatrical assemblages combine personal narratives and remixed references with the glossy aesthetics of commercial culture. Through subtle manipulation, repurposing, and juxtaposition of objects and icons, he unearths the eerie and absurd qualities that underlie the seemingly familiar. At once dazzling and ominous, his surreal amalgams chart the psychological complexities, desires, and illusions that haunt late-capitalist culture. For the inaugural installation in the window of the New Museum's 231 Bowery building, Da Corte presents "Harvest Moon," a new project that evokes the storefront of a soon-to-open Wawa, an East Coast chain of convenience stores founded outside Philadelphia. The window on the right is covered with a vinyl sign announcing a future development, with the words "coming soon" atop an image of an enlarged hoagie—a sandwich native to the Philadelphia area and a signature of Wawa stores. On the left, an illuminated sign rests on a pallet as if ... (read more)

Paul Kasmin Gallery, in collaboration with the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, is pleased to announce an inaugural solo exhibition of paintings by Lee Krasner, which will focus on her iconic Umber Paintings. The series consists of only twenty-four paintings, eight of which are held in major institutional collections. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated and comprehensive catalogue raisonné on the series with an essay by art historian Dr. David Anfam, Senior Consulting Curator of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver and curator of the recent exhibition Abstract Expressionism at the Royal Academy, London. Painted between 1959 and 1962, Krasner's Umber Paintings were realized during one of her most ambitious periods of creative production following the sudden and tragic loss of her husband, Jackson Pollock. During this time of newfound solitude, Krasner moved into Pollock's studio at their home in the Springs, East Hampton, which enabled her to experiment on large canvases for the first time. In addition to the increase in scale, this period was also characterized by a further commitment to 'allover' compositions, an emphasis on gesturality and an engagement with the ... (read more)

Helen Johnson: Ends - New Visit Hello Museum
Through January 14, 2018 - New York

Johnson's densely layered canvases incorporate historical imagery ranging from political cartoons, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century painting, architectural diagrams and maps, fragments of bodies, and handwritten text rendered with a variety of painterly gestures. Often double-sided and scaled to the human body, Johnson's works are arranged in carefully composed installations, positioning the viewer at the intersection of a broad range of cultural and historical influences. Although driven by a deep and rigorous process of historical research, her paintings adopt a playful and even humorous take on historical memory and ingrained social conventions. "Helen Johnson: Ends" is the artist's first exhibition in an American institution. For her presentation in the museum's lobby gallery, she will produce a new series that extends her broader thematic concerns, while maintaining her experimental approach to the material and the communicative possibilities of painting as a critical medium. "Helen Johnson: Ends" is curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari, Kraus Family Curator. Helen Johnson was born in 1979 in Melbourne, Australia, where she lives and works. She earned a BFA from the R...
