Tal National - Littlefield
Through February 13, 2018 - Brooklyn

World Music Institute is thrilled to present Tal National at Brooklyn's Littlefield on February 23, two weeks after the release of the band's newest album Tantabara on Fat Cat Records. By the time Tal National reached international acclaim with 2013’s Kaani, the band’s first release outside of Niger, they had spent more than a decade crisscrossing Niger, usually on dirt pathways through the Sahara, playing epic five-hour sets, seven days a week, selling their CDs on street corners. In the process, they became Niger’s most popular band. Audiences in the West and critics quickly embraced the band’s singular and well-honed sound.

Matt York - Rockwood Music Hall
February 18, 2018 - East Village

The Boston Herald says of Matt York's new album Boston, Texas that "the singer-songwriter uses basic building blocks — Holly's chords, Hank Williams' swagger, Steve Earle's boozy wisdom, Paul Westerberg's straight-up-drunk wisdom — to construct an album of beauty, optimism and heartbreak". Matt's new album explores a cross-section of everything from straight-up rock n roll to hints of outlaw country. His album has received radio airplay throughout the world. His album "Boston, Texas" was named Limelight Magazine's Debut Album of the Year". His most recent release, Between the Bars was listed as one of the top albums of 2017 by the Patriot Ledger, Gatehouse Media, Ryan's Smashing Life and radio stations WATD 95.9 FM's Almost Famous Radio and PIXY-103FM. Matt grew up in Foxboro, Massachusetts and began playing the clubs of Boston as a teenager. Since then, he's played on stages through New England, New York, Nashville and Toronto. His latest album "Between the Bars" was released in November, 2017. Gatehouse Media's Peter Chianca wrote of the new album "Put Boston's Matt York in the 'should be rich and famous department' -- his country rock with a jangly edge has instantaneous a... (read more)

Jane Bruce - Rockwood Music Hall
February 18, 2018 - East Village

Jane was born and raised in Ogden, UT by two kick-ass parents, with lots of help from a witty little sister and a menagerie of cats and dogs. Jane caught the performing bug at a young age, telling (bad) jokes at family reunions and putting on uncomfortably detailed skits at recess. Jane wrote her first song at age 6 on a thumb piano about the devastating death of Mittens, the kitten. After taking a star turn as the River Princess in an original "opera" written by her fifth grade class, Jane proclaimed that she was Broadway Bound. She eventually upgraded from the thumb piano and taught herself how to play guitar, as well as the egg shaker. None can deny that she shakes a mean egg. Jane sunk her teeth into every learning experience she could find, attending the Broadway Theater Project in Florida, and joining the Speech and Debate team. Jane competed nationally and took home the top honor in Dramatic Interpretation her senior year for her portrayal of Judy Garland. She continued to hone her songwriting skills as well, turning her journal entries into songs and taking inspiration from artists like Aimee Mann, Elliott Smith, Laura Marling, Iron and Wine, and Fiona Apple. And Jo... (read more)

It's music that never stays put, full of shifting tempos and winding melodies framed by her rich, gossamer voice and insightful lyrics. Emma moved to New York nine months ago from Montreal where she released two critically acclaimed albums, For Being Apart (2014) andThe People We're Becoming (2015). She is now working on a third album of songs with Aaron Parks (piano), Jim Black (drums), Rick Rosato (bass) and Franky Rousseau (guitar).

The Academy Blues Project - Rockwood Music Hall
February 18, 2018 - East Village

The Academy Blues Project is a multi-genre band founded in 2012 and based in New York City. ABP falls in a lineage of brazen New York showbands, and their tunes pack a punch: blending funk grooves, dynamic storytelling, elements of prog & classic soul, and the bluesy wail of frontman Mark Levy into an irresistibly eccentric sound. Their propulsive live shows skew toward the outrageously theatrical, lyrically spinning offbeat narratives about everything from witches' hats to shipwrecks to the mysteries of the Hollywood Hills. ABP released its debut recordings in 2016 in a series of pioneering physical formats. The band's first single, "A Long Walk," was put out as a series of custom-grown succulent plants; its follow-up, "Witch Hat," was shared on Halloween of the same year inside servings of limited-edition ABP branded chocolate candies. The band released its inaugural EP, Upwelling, as both a digital download and a run of homemade model ships in April 2017. ABP performs regularly in all boroughs of New York City, most recently at Brooklyn Academy of Music, C'mon Everybody, The Shrine, and in-residence at LIC Bar and Rockwood Music Hall. ABP celebrated its debut EP rel... (read more)

Arnold/Klampanis/Hiroshi - Rockwood Music Hall
February 18, 2018 - East Village

Andreas Arnold - Guitar As an artist in a globalized world, Andreas Arnold expresses himself through a musical kaleidoscope that reflects the classical traditions of his homeland Germany, jazz from the US where he has been living for the last decade, and music from the Mediterranean, in particular the Spanish art form of flamenco. Through this unique fusion, Arnold proves that purity is not defined by any one culture or style but transpires when one finds his voice to express his personal experience in society, art, and life. While living between New York City and Andalusia, Spain, Arnold has participated in numerous productions as an instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and producer, touring on five continents. On his new album Ojos Cerrados he was accompanied among others by Carles Benavent, legendary and longtime bass player of Paco de Lucia. Arnold grew up in a family of classical musicians in southern Germany. He fell in love with Paco de Lucia as a teenager but went on to study jazz guitar at the conservatory of Amsterdam and later in NYC with Mike Stern, John Abercrombie and Wayne Krantz before entering a period of complete dedication to the art of flamenco guitar... Presidents' Dave Weekend: a 25th Anniversary Screening of Dave - Music Box Theater
February 18, 2018 - New York

This Presidents' Day weekend, the Music Box hails to the chief with a special screening of DAVE! In this classic 90s comedy, Kevin Kline is Dave Kovic, an ordinary man who happens to look exactly like the President of the United States. To avoid a scandal when the President suffers a stroke, the good-natured Dave must secretly assume the role of Leader of the Free World. Surprisingly, he's pretty good at it! Director Ivan Reitman (GHOSTBUSTERS, KINDERGARTEN COP) and Kline craft an intelligent, hopeful political satire from an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Gary Ross (BIG). A box office success on its release in 1993, DAVE proves that when the right people are in charge, a little bit of good can come out of Washington D.C.

Aztec Two-Step Performs The Simon & Garfunkel Songbook: An Evening Of Songs & Stories - City Winery
February 18, 2018 - New York

When Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, the critically acclaimed duo Aztec Two-Step, burst on the scene in 1972 with their Elektra Records debut, they were often reviewed as having the "intellectual lyricism" and "ethereal harmonies" of their legendary predecessors Simon & Garfunkel. Renowned for helping to usher the folk-rock music of the 1960s into the '70s and beyond, Aztec Two-Step continues to be one of acoustic music's most beloved and enduring acts. While the duo possesses a rich musical legacy of their own, here they masterfully interpret and perform the timeless songs and harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel. The compelling multimedia music event celebrates Simon & Garfunkel's iconic contribution to Pop Culture and beyond. The music speaks for itself. The storyline of the Songbook show was originally created by the late great pioneer of progressive FM radio and author, Pete Fornatale. Now mc'ing the show and featured on narration, along with creating The Songbook's slideshow, is Fornatale's protégé, WCWP DJ and Long Island Hall of Fame co-founder Tony Traguardo. The Rub - Brooklyn Bowl
February 24, 2018 - Brooklyn

The Rub began in the summer of 2002, as a party where Brooklynites with good taste in music could come together, get wasted and dance until the wee hours of the morning. Even in that first year, it was clearly something special, garnering praise from the Village Voice ("best party in Brooklyn to dance sweatily to smart music"), New York Press ("best party in NYC") and many others. Fifteen years later, the original formula still holds true: great dance music mixed well, affordable drinks, and real people; no dress code, no bottle service and no celebrity DJs. Building on the consistently rammed club night, The Rub turned into more than a party, taking the show all around the world, moving hundreds of thousands of records and CDs, recording legendary mixes such as The History of Hip-Hop and racking up hundreds of episodes of Rub Radio. The Rub DJs have played shows with everyone from Gucci Mane to The Chemical Brothers, DJ Premier to Justice, adapting with the times but never forgetting the foundation of hip-hop, classic disco, funk and soul.

The 2016 Grammy-winning contemporary music ensemble Eighth Blackbird collaborates with composer and fiddler Dan Trueman, vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird of the contemporary Irish supergroup The Gloaming, and Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Paul Muldoon for a special performance of new work co-commissioned by Irish Arts Center, the Poetry Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the University of Richmond, and Princeton University. A modern retelling of an ancient Irish epic, Olago?n depicts the legendary Irish tale Táin Bó Cúailnge as a story of hardship in contemporary, post-recession Ireland while honoring traditional music of Ireland, Norway, and America. Muldoon's text—written in both English and Irish—is sung in the sean-nós style by Ó Lionáird.

Valerie June - The Egg Performing Arts Center
February 25, 2018 - Albany

Valerie June has been hailed by the New York Times as one of America's "most intriguing, fully formed new talents." The New Yorker was captivated by her "unique, stunning voice," while Rolling Stone dubbed her "unstoppable," and NPR called her "an elemental talent born with the ability to rearrange the clouds themselves." valeriejunepressSince the release of her 2013 breakout Pushin' Against A Stone, June has been patiently at work in the garden of song, nurturing seedlings with love and care into the lush bloom that is her stunning new album, The Order Of Time. Some songs grew from seeds planted more than a decade ago, others blossomed overnight when she least expected them to, but every track bears the influence of time. See, time has been on June's mind a lot lately. It's the only constant in life, even though it's constantly changing. It's the healer of all wounds, the killer of all men. It's at once infinite and finite, ever flowing with twists and turns and brutal, churning rapids that give way to serene stretches of placid tranquility. Fight against the current and it will knock you flat on your ass. Learn to read it, to speak its language, and it will carry you exactly w... (read more)

Corey Smith - Brooklyn Bowl
February 25, 2018 - Brooklyn

The way Corey Smith sees it, he owes a debt to his fans. And it's one he is determined to repay with his 10th album, While the Gettin' Is Good. The project, released on Sugar Hill Records, marks the first time that the singer-songwriter, a wildly popular touring artist who has produced all of his past efforts, has turned over the reins to a bona fide country music producer in Keith Stegall. The result is Smith's most ambitious record yet, as well as a return on the investment made by the fans who have supported him since his first album in 2003. "A lot of start-up acts are using fan-funded programs to finance their record. That's what my whole career has been: Kickstarter before Kickstarter. When my fans show up and buy a ticket and a t-shirt, they're investing in what I'm doing," says Corey. "It's my responsibility to invest it wisely and give them the best album I can. That's what led me to While the Gettin' Is Good." It's also what led him to Stegall, who has produced such radio heavyweights as Alan Jackson and Zac Brown Band. It was the producer's track record, country-music experience and easy-going nature that convinced Corey that he was the man to refine his signature ... (read more)
