Johnny Mercer Sings Johnny Mercer - 92nd Street Y
Through November 29, 2017 - Upper East Side

Will Friedwald, feature writer for The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair and the author of nine books on popular music, presents curated video clips from his extensive vintage collection to illustrate the great artistry of the performers and composers of the American Songbook. The presentations will be driven both by a profundity of rare and fascinating video footage, nearly all of which hasn't been seen publicly in decades (not available on home video or YouTube) and his own incisive commentary. Everyone knows Johnny Mercer's songs: "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Skylark" and "Moon River," but how many people know that he was also a great singer, especially of his own lyrics. In the 1950s and '60s, Mercer was a frequent presence on live television, and for this retrospective, we're culling his appearances from a wide range of vintage variety shows, featuring duets with such worthy constituents as Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Margaret Whiting and Nat King Cole.
