See the Sights: Flowers and Lights

Spring is just around the corner, meaning the weather is starting to improve and outdoor excursions are as fun as indoor activities. Here are some great ideas for activities and sights to check out as we doff our stocking caps to winter.

If you’ve got something of a green thumb, you will definitely want to head up to the Bronx to catch The Orchid Show: Brazilian Modern at the New York Botanical Garden (Bronx River Pkwy. 718-817-8700; www.nybg.org), running February 28th through April 12th. Thousands of brilliantly colored orchids and the lush tropical setting of a contemporary Brazilian garden await you in an exhibition designed by noted Miami-based landscape architect Raymond Jungles. Please note that the garden is closed on Mondays, and accessible by the Metro-North Harlem local line to Botanical Garden Station from Grand Central Terminal.

If you’re looking for a historical neighborhood tour of the city and would like something with a fresh perspective, you might enjoy taking one of Uncle Sam’s New York’s (917-655-0906; unclesamsnewyork.com) daily tours. Their Edgar Allan Poe Greenwich Village Tour strolls through the winding, twisted streets of the Village to discover where American literature, painting, cinema, and modern music got their start. They also have a daily Theater District Tour exploring the history of Broadway and Times Square. Additionally, they offer a slew of nightlife-focused tours, including a West Village Pub Crawl (Thurs., 5:30pm), the Hells Kitchen Pub Crawl (Wed., 5:30pm), the East Village Pub Crawl (Tues., 5:30pm), and the Chelsea Night Club Tour (Fri. & Sat., 9pm).

Another not-to-be-missed tour is OnBoard New York Tours’ comprehensive, 5-1/2-hour NY SEE IT ALL! tour, where tour guides step off the shuttle with you and lead you through each stop. Stops include Times Square, the World Trade Center Site, Wall Street, South Street Seaport, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and much more. Their 3-hour, nighttime NY SEE THE LIGHTS! tour starts in Times Square and shows you the greatest city in the world at night, offering magnificent views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the lights of Manhattan from across the river. For tickets, call 212-277-8018 or visit www.onboardnewyorktours.com.
