NEW YORK, January 27 -- To update one of its perennially popular productions and share it with a wider audience, Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre (CAMT) will re-imagine its "Johannes Dokchtor Faust, a Petrifying Puppet Comedye," translated and directed by Vit Horejs, March 21 to April 7 at Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., Manhattan. This classic of the Czech marionette repertoire is traditionally used to make fun of a king or a local mayor. The company's adaptation was initially developed in 1990 and its topical references will be updated to current times. The staging incorporates age-old technical tricks of Czech puppetry, including fire and thunder, hellish gargoyles and underwater creatures. The script is the first definitive American translation of the classic Czech text by the author known today only as "A.B." The production was developed by Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theater between 1991 and 1994 and it became a favorite and definitive part of its repertoire.

Punch Kamikaze: Inferno - Dixon Place
April 09, 2019 - New York

Drama of Works 'PUNCH Kamikaze' is the term we coined for a crazy experiment we did during our Alice in Wonderland puppet festival in the fall of 2007. Artists of various styles and puppet experience are assigned chapters or sections of a book, film, or historical event and then we present the pieces in order. No limitation is given on interpretation or puppet style used. It makes for the weirdest interpretations of things… Now we are tackling Dante Alighieri's 'INFERNO.' Aren't we all currently living in our own personal circle of hell? Why not make a fun puppet slam about it?!? Which one is your favorite? Limbo, lust, gluttony, or greed? Or maybe you prefer wrath, heresy, or violence. Might you prefer fraud or treachery? Come find out where these puppet Virgils might take you

St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble + Adam Rosenblatt - Baryshnikov Arts Center
April 12, 2019 - New York

A diverse program of old and new music juxtaposes contrasting works, including Thierry de Mey's theatrical Light Music, performed by percussionist Adam Rosenblatt. Through the use of motion sensors and interactive technology, choreographed hand gestures produce light, an electronic sound score, and vivid large-scale projections. This interdisciplinary solo is bookended by the renowned St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble performing Viennese classics. J. Haydn's lively Divertimento for Strings from 1754 and J. Lanner's charming 19th century waltzes were likely scored for festive occasions. None of the works include a cello in the instrumentation -- presumably because the musicians were all meant to stand at the parties for which these works were originally composed. Program: J. Haydn: Divertimento for 2 violins, 2 violas, and bass, Hob. II:2 (1754) Thierry de Mey: Light Music for soloist, projections, and interactive systems (2004) J. Lanner: Marie's Waltz for 2 violins, viola, and bass, op. 143 (1839) J. Lanner: The Romantics for 2 violins, viola, and bass, op. 167 (1841) Leadership support for music programming provided by the Thompson Family Foundation.

MAGNUM OPUS: A Retrospective, - Brooklyn Studios for Dance
Through April 13, 2019 - Brooklyn

In 2018, The People Movers’ choreographer and artistic director Kate Ladenheim and performer–designer Cecilia Lynn-Jacobs devised a collaborative project titled OH, CELINE and its heroine, Celine (née De La Croix). This fictional Brooklyn-based avant-garde dancer was conceived as a hilarious yet sincere caricature of a downtown artist. Through a sequence of events – sometimes harrowing, sometimes funny – the clueless New Age-y diva evolved into a provocative, Borat-like figure through whom her creators set to unmask the power structures in the contemporary art scene and our society at large. Over the last few months, Celine’s experiences unveiled through a long series of disarmingly pretentious social media posts, a mystifying art film, and surprising live appearances — all of which inspired unexpected reactions from the audiences. Now, Landenheim and Lynn-Jacobs present a look at their heroine’s journey in MAGNUM OPUS: A Retrospective, a multidisciplinary evening of solo performance combining theater, dance, and scenic installation, presented by Brooklyn Studios for Dance.

I'm not sure it's a network thing.” But the real improvisation starts when Katzberg’s emotionally-distant father dies, paralyzing her psyche and forcing her to confront her California-cool brother and erratic, prodigal sister. Dad in a Box, a darkly comedic, multi-character, semi-autobiographical, multimedia solo play, follows queer theater artist Kim Katzberg as she struggles to gain access to her emotional core, while processing the impending death of her abusive father. The story traces Katzberg’s efforts, through wildly inventive pieces in improv class, to prod and shock herself into facing and confronting her father’s emotional hold on her. Mean Girl Broadway Musical If you didn’t see Mean Girl back in the 2000s, then you probably didn’t have that great of a childhood. Most people might call it a chick flick, but in our opinion, it is one of the greatest teen movies of our generation. The people were in awe over our little mathematician. The spectacular Disney film that captivated audiences around the world has finally made it to Broadway! Following the success of the 2013 animated movie, Frozen the Musical expands on the story of two sisters, giving more time to the characters we’ve come to love. With a book by Jennifer Lee, and music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the show has kept many members of the creative team from the film, ensuring everything on stage is faithful to the original story. Instead of being a direct copy of the film, what Frozen the Musical does is transform these animated characters into something real and tangible. It really takes the time to dig deep into the characters’ motivations, allowing their relationships to develop further. Delving deeper into Elsa and Anna’s past, the extra time given to the young sisters makes their love for each other clear from the start. Young Elsa, portrayed by Brooklyn Nelson and Ayla Schwartz, is the perfect tragic heroine. Her reaction to hurting her sister, and her fear of hurting anyone else, tugs at the heartstrings of every audience member. Both actors convey the role of big sister brilliantly, tapping into the respons... (read more)
