Brilliant Corners: Danilo Perez Trio: Panamonk - Jazz Standard
December 02, 2017 - New York

The Panamanian GRAMMY Award–winning pianist and composer Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time, widely acclaimed both for his work with the Wayne Shorter band and his superb recordings as a leader. Released on Impulse! in 1996, Panamonk is an outstanding entry in the Pérez discography and (according to Scott Yanow at AllMusic) "one of the more interesting Thelonious Monk tribute albums of the 1990s. Pianist Danilo Pérez…has clearly learned from Monk's music, particularly in his use of space and quirky dissonances. The trio performances range from respectful ballads and Latinized treatments of Monk tunes to originals that somehow fit logically into the mood of the set…The music overall is adventurous, rhythmic, and quite joyful." Accompanied by the exceptional rhythm team of bassist Ben Street and drummer Terri Lynne Carrington, this special engagement by Danilo Pérez closes our "Brilliant Corners" series – Jazz Standard's tribute to "the loneliest" Thelonious Monk in his centennial year. December 02, 2017 - New York

DION FLYNN is best known as Barack Obama on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and has over 60 appearances as 14 different characters on both The Tonight Show & Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon. Cited by Oprah aMagazine as "one of our favorite creative thinkers..." Dion's solo improv has been described as: "Alternately maniacal and tender, vulnerable and ballsy, Dion Flynn looses his brand of liquid, synapse-rich comedy in an evening of interactive improv which takes the audience on a loopy, looping comic odyssey from which the ghosts of Orson Welles and Spalding Grey are never far. Flynn's mind is both shock and absorber, as spongy and receptive as the suspension in a New York taxicab: pretty soon, you're flying." — Tom Shone, Film Critic, Intelligent Life "Dion Flynn's solo theatrical improvisations are what it would be if Jackson Pollack and James Joyce did comedy." -An audience member named Nick, pressed for comment during a show by Dion. "Dion's solo performance at The PIT is an experience. He takes the audience on the same journey he is going through as he figures out his show/performance art piece/happening. And it's all in an empty space, armed with only a microphone, a... (read more)

While Dream saw moderate success in the early 2000's it was the one record given to the Barbadian princess in 2007 that to this day has been the pivotal record that changed sound and song for his generation. The song was "Umbrella," a record written along side music legend Tricky Stewart. "Umbrella" would go on to break domestic and international records while on its way to winning the first Grammy for Rihanna and also adding another Gold statue to Shawn "Jay Z" Carter's discography.

Samantha Fish - Cutting Room
December 16, 2017 - New York

Whether one leans towards the blues, opts for Americana or ignites some special fervour by playing with a garage band, there's a common bond that suggests a reverence for the roots. Looking back towards an earlier template — no matter what the genre — proves the point that appreciating what came before can be a stepping stone for what comes next. Samantha Fish knows that all too well, and it's been evidenced in the music she's made her entire career. While she's well known as a purveyor of blues, having been lauded by such legends as Buddy Guy, the Royal Southern Brotherhood and Luther Dickinson, her real love is simply raw, scrappy rock and roll. "I grew up on it," she insists. "Working with Luther on my last album further instilled that spirit in me. It made me realize just how much that basic, unfettered sound means to me, and how well it ties into soul music, R&B, country and so many other forms of music that are essential even today." It's little wonder that when it came time to record her new album, Chills & Fever (released March 17, 2017), Fish set her sights on Detroit, the home of soul, Motown, legendary R&B as well as the much edgier rock-n-roll of Iggy Pop, Jack Whit... (read more)

With the founding of the Trisha Brown Dance Company in 1970, Brown set off on her own distinctive path of artistic investigation and ceaseless experimentation, which extended for forty years. December 19, 2017 - New York

Universally recognized for his melodic percussive style and his gifts as a composer and bandleader, drummer Matt Wilson is one of today's most celebrated jazz artists. Perhaps the most surprising and purely entertaining of his many projects (as both leader and sideman) is Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree–O, with bassist Paul Sikivie and multi–reeds whiz Jeff Lederer. Now in its fifth year, Wilson's annual humorous and swinging Christmas celebration at Jazz Standard is always something to behold. As Nate Chinen noted in The New York Times, Wilson's Christmas Tree-O "represents something more than a side project or a symptom of seasonal opportunism. It has its own gait and style." A medium–tempo shuffle on "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing?" Check. A klezmerized version of the Hanukkah song "Eight Candles?" Check. A mash–up of "Angels We Have Heard on High" with Albert Ayler's anthemic "Angels?" Check. The Tree–O's very special guest this week is Nels Cline, named by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." Cited by Oprah aMagazine as "one of our favorite creative thinkers..." Dion's solo improv has been described as: "Alternately maniacal and tender, vulnerable and ballsy, Dion Flynn looses his brand of liquid, synapse-rich comedy in an evening of interactive improv which takes the audience on a loopy, looping comic odyssey from which the ghosts of Orson Welles and Spalding Grey are never far. (read more)

René Marie: Bringing in the Swing - Jazz Standard
December 28, 2017 - New York

In a span of two decades, eleven recordings, and countless stage performances, René Marie has cemented her reputation as not only a singer but also a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in the jazz vocal tradition forged by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of the past, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. (read more)

Magnificent Gems: Medieval Treasures - Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 07, 2018 - New York

Treasure bindings—book covers encrusted with gold, silver, and gemstones—were a luxury in the Middle Ages. Few survive, and some of the finest examples are in the Morgan's distinguished collection. Magnificent Gems: Medieval Treasure Bindings presents these masterpieces in context for the first time. The treasure bindings on view include star sapphires, diamonds, emeralds, pearls, and garnets, alongside illuminated manuscripts and printed books that depict two-dimensional representations of these precious materials. Among the exhibition highlights will be the ninth-century Lindau Gospels, one of the two finest Carolingian jeweled bindings in the world, and the thirteenth-century Berthold Sacramentary, the most luxurious German manuscript of its time. In these and other examples, we learn that the application of gemstones and precious metals served to venerate the texts inside and embellish church services, as well as reflect the status and wealth of the patrons who commissioned them. Images of "imagined" gems are also featured on the pages of manuscripts and printed books presented, including three examples of Venetian books, hand-painted by Girolamo da Cremona. The artis... Charles Dickens and the Spirit of Christmas - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 14, 2018 - New York

During his life, Charles Dickens (1812–1870) acquired the kind of celebrity accorded only to international film stars today. That status was secured with the publication of A Christmas Carol, one of the most beloved holiday stories of all time—and one of the Morgan's greatest literary manuscripts. Its immediate success in 1843 led to four equally popular Christmas novellas in as many years. Catapulting the author out of his study and onto the reading circuit in 1853, its universal popularity also had major consequences for Dickens. Charles Dickens and the Spirit of Christmas assembles, for the first time, all five manuscripts of Dickens's Christmas books—A Christmas Carol (1843), The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth (1845), The Battle of Life (1846), and The Haunted Man (1848)—to explore the genesis, composition, publication, and reception of A Christmas Carol, and its impact on Dickens's life. This exhibition explores the personal and socio-political sources of inspiration for A Christmas Carol, Dickens's method of composition, and the motivations behind writing one of the most famous, enduring, and widely adapted stories in all of literature. This exhibition marks ... (read more)

Views of Rome and Naples: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through March 18, 2018 - New York

During the second half of the eighteenth-century, a journey to Italy was considered an essential component in the education of young artists and noblemen from Northern Europe. Although Venice and Florence were requisite stops on the journey, artists tended to make their longest stay in Rome, and they generally also spent time in Naples. Both cities offered celebrated archeological sites and a taste of the unspoiled rural life of the campagna. Working outdoors, artists recorded their observations of these natural and man-made wonders in small-scale studies, mostly executed with oil paint on paper. In these oils, painters captured the grandiosity of Rome's classical ruins and the sublime natural beauty of Naples, with its famous view of Mount Vesuvius. Artists from France, Belgium, Germany, Norway, and Sweden are featured in this selection. Views of Rome and Naples is the fifth exhibition in a series drawn from the collection of oil sketches acquired by Morgan Trustee Eugene V. Thaw and his wife, Clare. Mr. Thaw is also an honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
