Carla Bley - TRIOS with Andy Sheppard / Steve Swallow - Jazz Standard
March 20, 2019 - New York

Here is simply one of the most anticipated club engagements of this New York jazz season. Any public performance by pianist/composer Carla Bley is today a rare and precious occurrence, even more so in an atmosphere as intimate as that of Jazz Standard. She is joined by veteran bassist and longtime collaborator Steve Swallow; and by British saxophonist and composer Andy Sheppard, whose Surrounded by Sea is his third and latest CD for the ECM label. "Even the jazz hardcore sometimes concede that unfettered improvisation can deliver a torrent of notes that could have used the odd edit. The distilled, yet playful, music of Carla Bley's trio is the perfect antidote…With Steve Swallow on bass guitar and Andy Sheppard on saxes, they seemed to be playing the absolute essence of a busier and more convoluted jazz, which they had decided to keep to themselves." (John Fordham, The Guardian, 7.19.2016)

In collaboration with Galerie Nathalie Obadia, FIAF presents Momentum, Bresson's first solo show in the US. The show will feature recent paintings that address current divisions in a globalized world—class struggles, migrations, and gender inequalities—echoing the writings of socially conscious French novelist Édouard Louis. Exciting news. We're inviting you to one big girly sleepover, where you share weird secrets about your body and let out all your feelings. Except, it's an hour, and guys can come. And we think the invitation is long overdue. There are SO many things that women go through with cheesy grins on our faces like nothing's happening! That's what we're expected to do, isn't it? Because if we complain about it, or cry about it, or really say anything about it, we're just being "girls." Welp, F that noise. This storytelling and show is an open conversation about the things we usually hide – FINALLY – cause the painfully real stuff is the funny stuff.
