The alt-pop group, who formed in Poughkeepsie in 2011, knew that it was time to evolve the way they wrote songs and allow for the music to surprise them in the studio. They looked to "Wasteland," a track on In Our Bones, as inspiration for how using new instrumentation and sounds could create something both familiar and unexpected. The band's second album, Past Lives, kicks everything up a notch. "We approached writing that song so differently than we'd ever approached writing a song before," Chrissy says. "It was such a different experience for us and we really stepped outside of our comfort zone. And you can really hear that on this record. We changed so much of how we write and how we look at songs because of that experience." The album was written and recorded over the course of a year, with the musicians penning over 40 song ideas in total. The band spent time in the studio in Los Angeles with producer Andrew Goldstein and in Nashville with producer T... (read more)

Through May 23, 2019 - New York

Exciting news. We're inviting you to one big girly sleepover, where you share weird secrets about your body and let out all your feelings. Except, it's an hour, and guys can come. And we think the invitation is long overdue. There are SO many things that women go through with cheesy grins on our faces like nothing's happening! That's what we're expected to do, isn't it? Because if we complain about it, or cry about it, or really say anything about it, we're just being "girls." Welp, F that noise. This storytelling and show is an open conversation about the things we usually hide – FINALLY – cause the painfully real stuff is the funny stuff.

Among Others: Photography and the Group - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among... (read more)
