Based on an actual event, Sembène's first feature combines the semi-doc technique of neo-realism with the simple, freewheeling style of the early New Wave in an unsparing attack on neo-colonial exploitation that put African cinema on the map. With Sembène himself as a schoolteacher. In French and Wolof, with English subtitles. Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl - Lt. Petrosino Square
May 31, 2019 - New York

In 1920, the United States enforced the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned liquor production, public consumption and the selling of anything alcoholic. This catapulted the criminal world and helped the mob monopolize and grow their illegal business of alcohol. It made some of the most vicious gangsters gain fame and fortune. Illegal bars known as speakeasies opened by the thousands and served bootleg liquor to a thirsty public. On this tour, you will walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. There you can sip a craft cocktail served by some of the top bartenders in New York City. While sipping on your now "legal" alcoholic beverage you will hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated into society. At the end of the tour you will be a "wiseguy" about Prohibition and the Italian mob. Further, you will stop in for some of the best pizza in all of New York City. The tour kicks off at Lt. Petrosino Square.

A.J. Croce at The Loft - The Loft at City Winery
June 02, 2019 - New York

According to Willie Nelson, "A.J. Croce has wisdom beyond his years. With his music, he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics and quality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands!" Some artists are afforded the chance to tell their personal stories as they see fit, at a particular moment when they know the time has come. But for many, there is no choice — the story emerges hardwired to the music and they become forever identified with it no matter how their story may evolve or change.

The Urgent Cinema of Santiago Alvarez - Film Forum
June 02, 2019 - New York

"My style is the style of hatred for Imperialism." One of the founders of Cuba's ICAIC, Santiago Álvarez (1919-1998) developed his distinctive "nervous montage" style – collages of found material assembled with fierce irony– out of necessity. "The Americans blockade us, forcing us to improvise." – Álvarez This program includes: Now! (1965), a denunciation of U.S. racism, set to the powerful song sung by Lena Horn. "Álvarez's bombshell, a work of great and forceful originality." – Michael Chanan LBJ (1968) "Álvarez's most biting piece of anti-imperialist satire… has deservedly become one of his best-known shorts."– Michael Chanan "A deadly and accurately aimed attack on a political system in which assassination had become an accustomed weapon." – Stuart Hood

LucíA - Film Forum
June 02, 2019 - New York

(1968, Humberto Solás) Epic narrative of the 100 year struggle, told in three parts, and through three distinct genres – tragedy, melodrama, and comedy – with each episode following a different woman named Lucía, all of different classes, each one's story an illustration of the stages of colonialism, neocolonialism, or socialist revolution. In 1895, the first Lucía is a member of the landed aristocracy, the second, in 1933, during the abortive revolution which led to the overthrow of Machado, is middle class, and the third, in the 1960s, is a rural peasant and member of an agricultural collective. At the time, the most ambitious (and expensive) movie produced by ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Cinematic Arts and Industry), with dazzling cinematography from Jorge Herrera, and a score by Leo Brouwer. In Spanish, with English subtitles. 4K DCP restoration funded by Turner Classic Movies and The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project. Approx. 160 min.

Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl - Lt. Petrosino Square
June 02, 2019 - New York
