Bill Charlap Trio - Village Vanguard
September 08, 2019 - New York

As a unit, this must be one of the best piano trios ever, and certainly as instantly recognisable as any of its great predecessors. Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (famously unrelated), the total effect is just perfect. As always, Charlap’s playing provides convincing proof that it is still possible to create fresh but pertinent treatments of well-known standard songs.

Monty Alexander - Blue Note
September 08, 2019 - New York

Nearly sixty years after he moved to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, his hometown, Grammy-nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic, touring the world relentlessly with various projects, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicings, a romantic spirit, and a consistent predisposition, like Alexander, accurately states, "to build up the heat and kick up a storm." In the course of any given performance, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae. Documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing), the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and in 2018 Th... 911 Memorial Concert - The Creative Cultural Center St. Veronica
September 08, 2019 - New York

Schiller Institute NYC Chorus 9-11 Memorial Concert, featuring Johannes Brahms Nänie Op. 82, Franz Schubert Mass in G, J.S. Bach Jesu, Meine Freude, and African-American Spirituals. The Schiller Chorus has performed concerts on 9-11 every year since 2016, when it performed four back-to-back performances of Mozart's Requiem in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and New Jersey. These concerts and the rehearsal process leading into them constitute a living memorial for those who perished on 9-11 and those who have since died as a result of those tragic attacks. It is for us, the living, to commit to creating a world of beauty and peace. The keystone of this year's tribute will be a performance of Johannes Brahm's beautiful choral and orchestral arrangement of the poem by Friedrich Schiller, Nänie. This poem takes up through the lens of ancient Greek mythology the question of the inevitability of death: "Auch das Schöne muß sterben," that even the beautiful must die! This sad occurrence can bring even goddesses to tears. However, their death is not the end when we sing in honor of those dead. Through our songs of lament we give them immortality. They may die, but beauty itself does ... (read more)

Higher Learning - IFC Center
Through September 08, 2019 - New York

"The college campus in John Singleton's new film is a racial and ideological war zone, where students rarely talk to other students who are not more or less just like themselves. Early in the film, a black freshman is given a tour of the turfs staked out by various racial groups: "There's Chinatown…the Black Hole… Disneyland…South of the Border…" The enforced segregation of the past has been replaced by new, voluntary xenophobia, and a result is a dreary place in which people define themselves by negatives. "HIGHER LEARNING is Singleton's third film, after the great Boyz N the Hood (1991) and the more meandering, romantic Poetic Justice (1993). He may be following, in some way, the threads of his own autobiography, in these three films about teenagers in South Central Los Angeles, young people working for the post office, and now freshmen in college. He sees with a clear eye and a strong will and is not persuaded by fashionable ideologies. His movies are thought-provoking because he uses familiar kinds of characters and then asks hard questions about them." – Roger Ebert (1995)

David Liebman & Richie Beirach - Mezzrow Jazz Club
September 12, 2019 - New York

David Liebman (Tenor Sax), Richie Beirach (Piano) Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach have carved out a place in jazz history through their collaborations in several distinct settings: duo, the iconic fusion group of the '70s, "Lookout Farm" followed in the '80s with the critically acclaimed quartet "Quest." Their musical telepathy is documented on several dozen recordings and years of performing together. Beginning with their mutual apprenticeships (most notably Lieb with Elvin Jones/ Miles Davis; Richie with Stan Getz/Chet Baker) along with their leadership of the musician's collective "Free Life Communication" in the early '70s that grew out of the New York City loft scene, their history is part of jazz folklore. Their influence as teachers, authors, composers and performers is acknowledged worldwide. This is especially heard in the harmonic realm where they developed a way of playing that reflected developments in 20th century classical composition alongside a unique approach towards playing the jazz standard repertoire. Most of all, their music, as sophisticated as it may be, is always heartfelt and passionate.

The Sound of Silence - IFC Center
September 13, 2019 - New York

There is a symphony of almost undetectable sounds that make up a moment of silence, and Peter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard) is determined to catalog them all. Through his job as a New York City "house tuner," the hyper-methodical Peter works meticulously to diagnose the discordant ambient noises—produced by everything from wind patterns to humming electrical appliances—adversely affecting his clients' moods. When he takes on the particularly difficult case of Ellen (Rashida Jones), a lonely woman plagued by chronic exhaustion, Peter finds that the mysteries of the soul may be even greater than the mysteries of sound. A quietly moving portrait of a harmony-obsessed man learning to embrace the dissonances of human emotion, THE SOUND OF SILENCE invites viewers to hear the world with fresh ears.

September 14, 2019 - New York

Age: 18+ Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco-based classically trained pianist Holly Bowling, who infuses jam band music with a technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at SF State University, Bowling has turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013's Distillation Of A Dream album and the Grateful Dead focused Better Left Unsung (released December 9, 2016 through The Royal Potato Family). Her instantly compelling playing and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Gov't Mule's Warren Haynes, and other luminaries who've asked Bowling to perform with them. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling plans to continue to expand her solo touring, and recently formed a new band Ghost Light with Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang.

Mean Streets - IFC Center
Through September 14, 2019 - New York

"The definitive New York movie, and one of the few to successfully integrate rock music into the structure of the film: watch Keitel waking to the sound of the Ronettes, or De Niro dancing solo in the street to 'Mickey's Monkey'. MEAN STREETS is also pure Italian-American. Charlie (Keitel), punk on the fringes of 'respectable' organized crime, ponders his adolescent confusions and loyalties. Beneath the swagger, he's embarrassed by his work, his religion, and by women and his friends, particularly Johnny Boy (De Niro), who owes everyone money. Scorsese directs with breathless, head-on energy which infuses the performances, the sharp fast talk, the noise, neon, and violence with a charge of adrenalin. One of the best American films of the decade." –Time Out (London)

Repo Man - IFC Center
Through September 14, 2019 - New York

35mm Print! Staff Pick! Chosen by Jeff who says: "This movie kept me out late a lot of my high-school weekends – in true Midnight Movie mode it didn't get a regular release in my neck of the woods when it came out – relegated instead to showing strictly midnights at the mall. I could just stand up and act out the entire movie on my own from beginning to end – but that wouldn't do the justice to cinematographer Robby Muller's beautifully evocative lensing of LA that this 35mm print showing will do!" "Cox's style is a step beyond camp into a comedy of pure disgust; much of the film is churlishly unpleasant, but there's a core of genuine anger that gives the project an emotional validation lacking in the flabby American comedies of the early 80s." – Chicago Reader

"The writer hails from Monty Python, the director invented the Muppets, the executive producer spawned a little thing called Star Wars. Its leading lady was a future Oscar winner. And the villain was played by a British rock god, who also contributed a couple of none-too-shabby songs to the soundtrack. "Jennifer Connelly, 16 at the time, plays the heroine, Sarah; David Bowie is Jareth, the glam rock Goblin King; Pythonite Terry Jones scripted, and George Lucas oversaw the project. "An innovative mix of sophisticated puppetry and special effects, LABYRINTH has all the components of classic myth: monsters and mazes, a hero (or heroine) who must overcome fear and self-doubt, and a journey that leads to discovery, and self-discovery." – Philadelphia Inquirer

Living in a yurt in frozen, end-of-the-earth Siberia, an Arctic indigenous couple, Nanook and Sedna, are self-sufficient, aided by their sled-dog and an occasional visitor. But their lives are changing: ice-fishing is not as productive, the ice is melting earlier each year, and wildlife is struggling to survive. They differ on whether or not to make amends with their estranged daughter, Ága, who left this remote tundra years ago to work in a diamond mine. When Sedna falls ill, Nanook embarks on an arduous journey to find her. Staggeringly photographed in widescreen ("Director Milko Lazarov and his cinematographer Kaloyan Bozhilov never cease to amaze." – Screen Daily) and suffused with ethnographic detail and empathy for the traditions of its isolated characters, ÁGA is an immersive, one-of-a-kind visual experience.
