Cracker & Camper Van Beethoven - Sony Hall
January 20, 2019 - New York

Cracker has been described as a lot of things over the years: alt-rock, Americana, insurgent-country, and have even had the terms punk and classic-rock thrown at them. But more than anything Cracker are survivors. Cofounders Lowery and Hickman have been at it for a quarter of a century -- amassing ten studio albums, multiple gold records, thousands of live performances, hit songs that are still in current radio rotation around the globe ("Low," "Euro-Trash Girl," "Get Off This" and "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out With Me" to name just a few), and a worldwide fan base -- that despite the major sea-changes within the music industry -- continues to grow each year.

"It was a transitional time where I just let myself have some space from my career and get some perspective on life, something I really hadn't had the freedom to do since I was 10. Then, a friend invited me to come to Nashville to do a songwriting camp for other artists," McCartney recollects. "It triggered a huge surge in creative energy that led me to put this project and team together." Now that he's moving, McCartney has no intention of slowing down. He plans to release more music throughout 2018 and bring his dedicated fans along for the ride.

Brothers Osborne - Terminal 5
January 23, 2019 - New York

Growing up the sons of a working-class mother and father, T.J. and John Osborne learned at an early age how to make do with what they had. Their blue-collar rural Maryland upbringing was far from the one other kids were experiencing in the nearby affluent suburbs of the nation's capital. Whether they were lighting their house with candles when the electricity was turned off or using a garden hose for summertime fun, T.J. and John were frequently making something from nothing. That same sensibility informs the music they make as Brothers Osborne, a twang-and-crunch duo that blends equal parts country and rock into one of the freshest, most identifiable sounds to come out of Nashville in recent years. "A lot of the coolest music comes when you don't have anything else to do and you have random objects lying around," says John, at 31 the older of the two. "You pick them up and just bang on them to make a noise that makes sense. Writing a song is similar. You're plucking something out of thin air. All music is literally making something out of nothing."

In their review of the band's last album, Slink, WBGO writes, the album "stakes out uncommon musical territory, a place where Celtic reels merge with gospel and funk, as if it were the most natural thing on earth." In addition to O'Farrill and Bixler, The Auction Project features Grammy Award-winning percussionist Vince Cherico, Grammy-nominated accordionist Victor Prieto, violinist/fiddler Heather Bixler and bassist Carlo De Rosa.

Life of a Legend: Carmen de Lavallade - Dizzy's Club Coca Cola

Dancer, actor, and choreographer Carmen de Lavallade has a unique gift for movement, and her groundbreaking dance concepts have inspired artists and audiences for generations. Tonight we celebrate de Lavallade's love of both dance and jazz, revisiting some of the iconic dance works she performed with jazz musicians. Though she has long been a star on Broadway and in Hollywood, Shakespearean theater, and many genres of dance—including ballets choreographed for her by the likes of Lester Horton, Agnes de Mille, and Geoffrey Holder—her roots in jazz run especially deep. She improvised dances with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Bill Evans, and Jane Ira Boom. She brought Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to tears in 1960 with her embodiment of Billie Holiday in "Portrait of Billie"—a piece that de Lavallade performed with a friend whom she brought to the dance world: Alvin Ailey. De Lavallade's artistry goes so much deeper than technical mastery; she approaches dance as an act of storytelling, a transfixing form of communication that she still achieves with grace at age 87. De Lavallade was named ... (read more)

The Art of Travel Photography - WFM Studios
January 27, 2019 - New York

Travel photography, at its core, is about capturing a sense of place. This sense of place, the essence of a location, is the thread, the unifying theme, that ties a collection of architectural, portrait, landscape, wildlife, street, food, family, lifestyle and every other type of image together. This is easier said than done. When you travel, you have little at your disposal. You have limited time, gear, modes of travel, contacts, local information and so on. As a travel photographer, your job is to utilize every type of photography, every technique and any and everything made available to you to provide a sense of place. To provide for a collection of images when taken in part or as a whole, takes the viewer on a journey, that allows them to understand and truly what it feels like to be there. Not what it looks like but what it feels like to be there. In this Workshop, we will go over how to capture the soul of a city, its people and its culture. This is what we really want to capture after all... Sure, we may want to capture the postcard perfect pictures too - but a series of images that capture the essence of a place is what makes for an extraordinary travel collection.

Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done - The Museum of Modern Art
Through February 03, 2019 - Manhattan

For a brief period in the early 1960s, a group of choreographers, visual artists, composers, and filmmakers made use of a local church to present performances that Village Voice critic Jill Johnston declared the most exciting new developments in dance in a generation. Redefining the kinds of movement that could count as dance, the Judson participants—Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Philip Corner, Bill Dixon, Judith Dunn, David Gordon, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Fred Herko, Robert Morris, Steve Paxton, Rudy Perez, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, Carolee Schneemann, and Elaine Summers, among others—would go on to profoundly shape all fields of art in the second half of the 20th century. Taking its name from the Judson Memorial Church, a socially engaged Protestant congregation in New York's Greenwich Village, Judson Dance Theater was organized as a series of open workshops from which its participants developed performances. Together, the artists challenged traditional understandings of choreography, expanding dance in ways that reconsidered its place in the world. They employed new compositional methods to strip dance of its theatrical conventions, incorporating "ordinary" movements—ge... (read more)

Constantin Brancusi Sculpture - The Museum of Modern Art
Through February 24, 2019 - Manhattan

Poet Erza Pound spoke of artist Constantin Brancusi's work as providing "the master keys to the world of form." Over a career that spanned half a century, Brancusi's innovations transformed sculpture as it had been known, and influenced generations of artists to come. After moving to Paris in 1904 from his native Romania, Brancusi affected the appearance of a Romanian peasant—a long beard, work shirt, and sandals—while embedding himself in avant-garde art circles. He soon began pushing modernist sculpture to the threshold of abstraction, developing a new, simplified vocabulary of graceful crescents, gleaming ovoids, and rough-hewn blocks that often evoked rather than resembled the things named in their titles, such as Bird in Space or Fish. He put the natural properties of his materials on display, carving directly into wood and stone and polishing metal to high reflectivity. The bases for his sculptures were often built of stacked elements—wood cubes, cylindrical slices, pyramidal blocks, or cruciform stones—becoming an integral component of the work itself and hinting at the possibility of infinite rearrangement, an idea that would prove fertile in future decades.

Mean Girl Broadway Musical If you didn’t see Mean Girl back in the 2000s, then you probably didn’t have that great of a childhood. Most people might call it a chick flick, but in our opinion, it is one of the greatest teen movies of our generation. The people were in awe over our little mathematician. She has far greater and extravagant plans for the Mean Girls Franchise. You'd like to know if Tina Fey can write a musical. The spectacular Disney film that captivated audiences around the world has finally made it to Broadway! Following the success of the 2013 animated movie, Frozen the Musical expands on the story of two sisters, giving more time to the characters we’ve come to love. With a book by Jennifer Lee, and music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the show has kept many members of the creative team from the film, ensuring everything on stage is faithful to the original story. Instead of being a direct copy of the film, what Frozen the Musical does is transform these animated characters into something real and tangible. It really takes the time to dig deep into the characters’ motivations, allowing their relationships to develop further. Delving deeper into Elsa and Anna’s past, the extra time given to the young sisters makes their love for each other clear from the start. Young Elsa, portrayed by Brooklyn Nelson and Ayla Schwartz, is the perfect tragic heroine. Her reaction to hurting her sister, and her fear of hurting anyone else, tugs at the heartstrings of every audience member. Both actors convey the role of big sister brilliantly, tapping into the respons... (read more)
