Peter Valera & The Jump Blues Band - BB King Blues Club & Grill
January 07, 2018 - New York

"Don't worry if you can't get a seat close to saxophonist Peter Valera. When he is busy blowing the blues, Valera is liable to leap off the stage and wade into the crowd, moving as fast as the music pouring out of his horn. But that's not surprising: This is not Muzak or easy-listening. This is get-up-and-move music, blues played in a white-hot fury, volume and energy cranked up all the way to 11. Backed by the soulful Jump Blues Band, Valera doesn't so much play the saxophone as let it sing, unleashing a range of emotions and experiences too rich and wonderful for mere words to convey. Experience it yourself when this remarkable musician -- who just released his first record Jump Blues heats things up at Lucille's Grill at B.B. King Blues Club."

Whitney Houston & Stevie Wonder Trib. w/ Emilie Surtees & Gabe Morris - BB King Blues Club & Grill
January 08, 2018 - New York

The Music of Whitney Houston For a singer with such powerful pipes, it's something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a "listener." Then again, maybe it's her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her tribute to Whitney Houston " Greatest Love of All" its almost surreal accuracy. For Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them -- something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. The Music of Stevie Wonder From Stevie Wonder's early days as a child prodigy signed by Berry Gordy through classic albums of the '70s and '80s, Papa J. & Mo' Soul pay tribute to this one-of-a-kind artist. You'll hear the unforgettable ballads like "Isn't She Lovely" and soul classics such as "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" that earned Wonder dozens of Grammys.

Eli Cook's music expresses that same raw honesty in a unique blend of contemporary and old-school styles, creating an original sound at the fore-front of modern Blues and Rock. Eli took up the guitar as a teenager in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia. Following the tradition of the great blues men, he performed in churches and late-night gospel revivals with only his acoustic and deep baritone voice, while playing every hole-in-the-wall bar that could handle his electric power trio. Blending the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Fred MacDowell, Bukka White and Lightning Hopkins with the likes of Clutch, Soundgarden, C.O.C, and Rage against the Machine, he forged a fresh sound, alive with the southern blues tradition.

A William Castle Double Feature - MoMA : Museum of Modern Art
January 13, 2018 - New York

This thriller double feature from exploitation auteur William Castle has two key ingredients that appealed to Club 57 moviegoers: deviance and impersonation. The gender-bending American gothic Homicidal is a memorably unsettling and amusing riff on Alfred Hitchcock (to whom Strait-Jacket also owes a debt). With a screenplay by Psycho novelist Robert Bloch, Strait-Jacket makes the most ambitious use of Joan Crawford's late-career screen persona (with the possible exception of Robert Aldrich's Whatever Happened to Baby Jane), casting her as an ex-ax murderer, crime victim, and drag monster. Homicidal. 1961. USA. Directed by William Castle. With Glenn Corbett, Jean Arless, Patricia Breslin, Eugenie Leontovich. 87 min. Strait-Jacket. 1964. USA. Directed by William Castle. Vijay Iyer - Birdland
Through January 13, 2018 - New York

Keyboardist-composer Vijay Iyer's energized sequence of ECM releases has garnered copious international praise. Yet his fifth for the label since 2014 – Far From Over, featuring his dynamically commanding sextet – finds Iyer reaching a new peak, furthering an artistry that led The Guardian to call him "one of the world's most inventive new-generation jazz pianists" and The New Yorker to describe him as "extravagantly gifted… brilliantly eclectic." Far From Over features this sextet of virtuoso improvisers – with horn players Graham Haynes, Steve Lehman and Mark Shim alongside rhythm partners Stephan Crump and Tyshawn Sorey – leveraging a wealth of jazz history even as it pushes boldly forward. The music ranges from the thrillingly explosive ("Down to the Wire," "Good on the Ground") to the cathartically elegiac ("For Amiri Baraka," "Threnody"), with melodic hooks, entrancing atmosphere, rhythmic muscle and an elemental spirit all part of the allure.

Louise Bourgeois: An Unfolding Portrait - MoMA : Museum of Modern Art
Through January 28, 2018 - New York

Louise Bourgeois: An Unfolding Portrait explores the prints, books, and creative process of the celebrated sculptor Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010). Bourgeois's printed oeuvre, a little-known aspect of her work, is vast in scope and comprises some 1,200 printed compositions, created primarily in the last two decades of her life but also at the beginning of her career, in the 1940s. The Museum of Modern Art has a prized archive of this material, and the exhibition will highlight works from the collection along with rarely seen loans. A special installation will fill the Museum's Marron Atrium. The artist's creative process is the organizing principle behind the exhibition. Over the course of her career, Bourgeois constantly revisited the themes of her art, all of which emerged from emotions she struggled with for a lifetime. Also, she said there was no "rivalry" between the mediums in which she worked, noting that "they say the same thing in different ways." Here, her prints and illustrated books will be seen in the context of related sculptures, drawings, and paintings, and within thematic groupings that explore motifs of architecture, the body, and nature, as well as investigation... Items: Is Fashion Modern? - MoMA : Museum of Modern Art
Through January 28, 2018 - New York

Items: Is Fashion Modern? explores the present, past—and sometimes the future—of 111 items of clothing and accessories that have had a strong impact on the world in the 20th and 21st centuries—and continue to hold currency today. Among them are pieces as well-known and transformative as the Levi's 501s, the Breton shirt, and the Little Black Dress, and as ancient and culturally charged as the sari, the pearl necklace, the kippah, and the keffiyeh. Items will also invite some designers, engineers, and manufacturers to respond to some of these indispensable items with pioneering materials, approaches, and techniques—extending this conversation into the near and distant futures, and connecting the history of these garments with their present recombination and use. Driven first and foremost by objects, not designers, the exhibition considers the many relationships between fashion and functionality, culture, aesthetics, politics, labor, identity, economy, and technology. The Items: Is Fashion Modern? exhibition catalogue, by Paola Antonelli and Michelle Millar Fisher, is available now.

Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983 - MoMA : Museum of Modern Art
Through April 01, 2018 - New York

The East Village of the 1970s and 1980s continues to thrive in the global public's imagination. Located in the basement of a Polish Church at 57 St. Marks Place, Club 57 (1978–83) began as a no-budget venue for music and film exhibitions, and quickly took pride of place in a constellation of countercultural venues in downtown New York fueled by low rents, the Reagan presidency, and the desire to experiment with new modes of art, performance, fashion, music, and exhibition. A center of creative activity in the East Village, Club 57 is said to have influenced virtually every club that came in its wake. Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983 is the first major exhibition to fully examine the scene-changing, interdisciplinary life of this seminal downtown New York alternative space. The exhibition will tap into the legacy of Club 57's founding curatorial staff—film programmers Susan Hannaford and Tom Scully, exhibition organizer Keith Haring, and performance curator Ann Magnuson—to examine how the convergence of film, video, performance, art, and curatorship in the club environment of New York in the 1970s and 1980s became a model for a new spirit of inte... The artists featured in Thinking Machines exploited the potential of emerging technologies by inventing systems wholesale or by partnering with institutions and corporations that provided access to cutting-edge machines. They channeled the promise of computing into kinetic sculpture, plotter drawing, computer animation, and video installation. Photographers and architects likewise recognized these technologies' capacity to reconfigure human communities and the built environment. Thinking Machines includes works by John Cage and Lejaren Hiller, Waldemar Cordeiro, Charles Csuri, Richard Hamilton, Alison Knowles, Beryl Korot, Vera Molnár, Cedric Price, and Stan VanDerBeek, alongside computers designed by Tamiko Thiel and others at Thinking Machines Corporation, IBM, Olivetti, ... Stephen Shore - MoMA : Museum of Modern Art
Through May 28, 2018 - New York

Stephen Shore encompasses the entirety of the artist's work of the last five decades, during which he has conducted a continual, restless interrogation of image making, from the gelatin silver prints he made as a teenager to his current engagement with digital platforms. One of the most significant photographers of our time, Stephen Shore (American, b. 1947) has often been considered alongside other artists who rose to prominence in the 1970s by capturing the mundane aspects of American popular culture in straightforward, unglamorous images. But Shore has worked with many forms of photography, switching from cheap automatic cameras to large-format cameras in the 1970s, pioneering the use of color before returning to black and white in the 1990s, and in the 2000s taking up the opportunities of digital photography, digital printing, and social media. The artist's first survey in New York to include his entire career, this exhibition will both allow for a fuller understanding of Shore's work, and demonstrate his singular vision—defined by an interest in daily life, a taste for serial and often systematic approaches, a strong intellectual underpinning, a restrained style, sly hum... As you turn on the app, plug in your headphones and walk through Times Square, a voice will accompany your wanderings with poems about searching for freedom, reflections on navigating the city, and cross-cultural myths about the cardinal directions, woven through with quotes from and reworkings of Walk With Me, the African-American spiritual turned Civil Rights freedom song. The voice in Compass Song is always underscored by a drone, a unique harmony that translates the latitude and longitude data for Times Square into sound and modulates as you walk north, south, east, or west. Interspersed with this are vocal performances of the sounds of Ti... (read more)
