Everclear - Sony Hall
October 06, 2019 - New York

Considering Everclear has written and recorded some truly iconic '90s alt-rock hits, it would be all too easy these days for the band to be a victim of its past successes, relegated to performing as a glorified jukebox, existing to satisfy the nostalgic cravings of Gen Xers everywhere. But singer-guitarist Art Alexakis isn't about to start phoning it in now. Although the band hasn't released a new studio album since 2015's triumphant Black Is The New Black, Everclear continues to tour actively. And while it's a virtual surety that no Everclear gig is complete without a rendition of "Santa Monica" and "Father of Mine," lately the band has found that exploring the full range of past material—especially the "deep cuts"—not only gives fans a rare treat, it also injects new life into the band's live dynamic.

Kelly Green Trio - Birdland Jazz Club
October 06, 2019 - New York

Kelly Green Trio Kelly Green - Piano and Voice Alex Tremblay - bass Evan Hyde - drums The Kelly Green Trio opens its debut album, Volume One, with an almost 10-minute rendition of the Jerome Kern/Johnny Mercer chestnut "I'm Old-Fashioned" that establishes the opposite premise of the lyric. Subtly reharmonizing the standard, the ensemble sounds anything but out of date, streamlining Kern's already compressed melody without detracting from the beauty of his ingenious line. It's a performance that sets a high bar, which Kelly mostly meets through a program full of songs from the first half of the 20th century.

Flying Colors - Sony Hall
October 07, 2019 - New York

It started with a simple idea: virtuoso musicians and a pop singer joining to make new-fashioned music the old fashioned way. A band followed, evolving into Flying Colors: Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Dave LaRue (bass), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Casey McPherson (lead vocals), and Steve Morse (guitar). Together, they create a unique fusion of vintage craftsmanship, contemporary music and blistering live performances. In 2008, executive producer Bill Evans began putting the idea into action. It needed exactly the right musicians. In addition to be being extraordinary players and writers, they would need to be a natural creative fit, complementing each others' abilities. There would be proven chemistry from past collaborations, but the new band would be different from anything they'd done. The world didn't need another supergroup.
