Intercultural Connections Series with Mick Moloney: If It Wasn't for the Irish and the Jews - Irish Arts Center
March 27, 2019 - New York

Taking its title and inspiration from a 1912 song composed by William Jerome (real name: William Flannery) and Jean Schwartz, "If It Wasn't for the Irish and the Jews" is an entertaining and insightful examination of cross-pollination in a bygone era of U.S. cultural history: when vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley flourished with the fertile contributions of Irish and Jewish songwriters, theatrical producers, and music publishers. The stories of former Broadway luminaries and a trove of archival film footage populate Dr. Moloney's richly illustrated talk about the nimble wit, socioeconomic observation, exuberant rhythms, melodic charm, and sentimental appeal that defined this under-appreciated chapter of our musical heritas

Marcus Miller: Electric Miles - Jazz at Lincoln Center
March 29, 2019 - New York

Miles Davis' "electric period" (1969—1992) is one of the most influential and passionately debated eras in all of modern music. In this exclusive new program, one of Davis' crucial collaborators—bassist Marcus Miller—will take audiences through an eclectic body of work, starting with the moment Davis first discovered electric piano in 1969. Much like Gil Evans and Wayne Shorter before him, Miller played an essential role in shaping Davis' musical visions. Not only did he play bass on six of Davis' studio albums, Miller also produced and composed almost every song on three of them, including the Grammy Award–winning Tutu. To this day, Miller is still the premier electric bassist, having recorded more than 500 albums as a leader and with legends such as Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Frank Sinatra, George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Aretha Franklin, and LL Cool J. Throughout the show, Miller and his band will lead a wide-ranging exploration of Davis' bold experiments with jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, and electronic fusions that continue to resonate and inform music today. You will experience a selection of faithful arrangements and, as Davis would surely insist, brand-new versions tha... (read more)

Mean Girls - August-Wilson Theatre
Through June 05, 2019 - New York

Mean Girl Broadway Musical If you didn’t see Mean Girl back in the 2000s, then you probably didn’t have that great of a childhood. Most people might call it a chick flick, but in our opinion, it is one of the greatest teen movies of our generation. The people were in awe over our little mathematician. Oh, and it’s not just our opinion, the movie was showered with more awards then we can count. But, the story just keeps getting better. After her incredible movie, Tina Fey didn’t just stop there. She has far greater and extravagant plans for the Mean Girls Franchise. You'd like to know if Tina Fey can write a musical. The oh-so-not-surprising answer is... yes! – Peter Marks, The Washington Post We sometimes feel that our childhood is coming to life with musicals. First, it was Bring it On, then Heathers with several others in development. But, the musical for Mean Girls is already here. The Mean Girls Musical is a masterpiece from the great Fey. But, it was a moment of joy for every fan when it was announced on “Mean Girls Day” that their favorite movie was comi... (read more)

Frozen - Broadway Musical - St. James Theatre
Through June 05, 2019 - New York

The spectacular Disney film that captivated audiences around the world has finally made it to Broadway! Following the success of the 2013 animated movie, Frozen the Musical expands on the story of two sisters, giving more time to the characters we’ve come to love. With a book by Jennifer Lee, and music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the show has kept many members of the creative team from the film, ensuring everything on stage is faithful to the original story. Instead of being a direct copy of the film, what Frozen the Musical does is transform these animated characters into something real and tangible. It really takes the time to dig deep into the characters’ motivations, allowing their relationships to develop further. Delving deeper into Elsa and Anna’s past, the extra time given to the young sisters makes their love for each other clear from the start. Young Elsa, portrayed by Brooklyn Nelson and Ayla Schwartz, is the perfect tragic heroine. Her reaction to hurting her sister, and her fear of hurting anyone else, tugs at the heartstrings of every audience member. Both actors convey the role of big sister brilliantly, tapping into the respons... (read more)
