Through their unique comedic perspectives, these men challenge the prejudices that still exist in today's world. And, when they do, look out, you'll find yourself not only laughing out loud but emerging with new perspectives on race and ethnicity and the wonderful diversity of American culture. Saint Clair Cemin: Oedipus - Paul Kasmin Gallery
Through April 14, 2018 - New York

Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new sculpture by Brazilian artist Saint Clair Cemin. This will be Cemin's fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. Oedipus takes on the renowned and influential Greek tragedy in order to interrogate the commanding force that human action can impose over what we perceive to be 'destiny.' Furthering the artist's investigation into the symbolism of ancient mythology, the exhibition presents a new, twenty-part work alongside three sculptures that act as monuments to the power of language and family. The exhibition is on view at the gallery's 293 Tenth Ave location between March 8 - April 14, 2018. The exhibition's title work, Oedipus, functions as its focal point and represents Cemin's first exploration into the form of narrative sculpture; a traditional folk practice popular in his native Northeastern Brazil. Twenty sculptural tableaux are cast in bronze, each presented on an individual plinth and placed in a spiral formation that curves into the center of the gallery. Tiresias, the blind prophet of Apollo, revered for his clairvoyance, takes the role of narrator and sits at the center of the configuration, posed gesticulatin... (read more)

Alex Katz: Cut Outs - Paul Kasmin Gallery
Through April 14, 2018 - New York

Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of "Cut Outs" sculpture editioned by Alex Katz. "Cut Outs" demonstrates the artist's ongoing investigation into the properties of visual perception and the brilliance of surface as represented and rendered in the human figure. Since the 1950s, this dedication to figurative realism—informed by the scale and power of Abstract Expressionism and utilizing the graphic language of advertising that anticipated Pop—has marked Katz as one of the most inventive and technically achieved artists of the twentieth and twenty-first century. The hard exterior lines of the Cut Outs mirror their stern materiality. Realized in stainless or porcelain enamel coated steel, they underscore the artist's dedication to the flat, clean aesthetic for which he is famed. The exhibition brings together four works depicting Katz' wife Ada with one larger, multi-figure work.

Robert Polidori Fra Angelico / Opus Operantis - Paul Kasmin Gallery
Through April 14, 2018 - New York

Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce the debut presentation of a selection of Robert Polidori's large-scale color photographs of the frescoes of Fra Angelico (1395-1455) contained in the Dominican priory of San Marco in Florence. The exhibition will be on view from March 8 through 14 April, 2018. In the canon of art history, these works, executed in the birthplace of the Renaissance, give us a full sense of the period's renewed commitment to the life of the spirit. Polidori visited the Convento di San Marco several times over the course of 2010 to capture the solemnity and sheer force of the frescoes and their reflection, through the depiction of the life of Christ, of the universal condition of mankind. The frescoes, painted by Fra Angelico between 1439 and 1444 for purposes of devotion and contemplation, extend beyond literal storytelling. They shift into the metaphysical realm, bringing the viewer into contact with the incidents of the life of Christ in the context of a newborn psychological and subjective interpretation. In this altered manner of worship lies the root of the changes in faith and understanding that were to follow during the span of the reawakening th... (read more)

Three Small Irish Masterpieces - Irish Repertory Theater
Through April 15, 2018 - New York

A simple policeman looks into his heart and turns himself into a wide-eyed folk hero. A hungry trickster makes a hearty meal of a stone and a song. A poignant tale is told of a solitary man washed up by the sea on the faraway coast of Donegal. This is the stuff of which great drama can be wrought. A one-act play can achieve a kind of greatness. If that one-act play is written by John Millington Synge, Lady Gregory, or William Butler Yeats, surely it has a head start in that direction. With their romantic views of the past, and their wondrous sets of laws and techniques, these three plays, lovingly presented, full of politics, wild humor, unique displays of language, and finally, deep tragedy, come as close as can be to masterworks.

Invoking personal themes of identity and migration, alongside more universal concerns related to tourism, trade, and the exploitation of natural resources, the internationally established and emerging artists in The Ocean After Nature respond to the intertwined factors that define this new understanding of the ocean. Olivia Kapoor - Agora Gallery
Through April 25, 2018 - New York

The paintings of American Inter-Dimensional Visionary artist Olivia Kapoor offer ethereal meditations on the nature of time and emotion interpreted through color, geometry, and texture. Working predominantly in acrylic, oil, and pastel, the artist constructs highly saturated canvases that defy traditional, realist expressions of color. Her overall oeuvre blends contemporary painting techniques with the style of Surrealist and Impressionist masters such as Salvador Dali, Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Kapoor describes her technique as "relaxed and meditative." She explains: "My state of mind and how I feel emotionally contribute greatly to the work itself, how it comes together, and how long it takes.... The great thing about the end result is that it is able to speak for itself, tell a story, communicate something to the viewer." The artist's compelling juxtapositions of pattern and texture are at once immersive and dynamic, thus inviting the viewer into the continuously evolving, dream-like world Kapoor cultivates through paint.

Sergey Klychkov - Agora Gallery
Through April 25, 2018 - New York

Sergey Klychkov's paintings are both whimsical and profound, studious and spontaneous. Focusing mainly on portraiture, Klychkov is especially skilled at delineating the expressive details of the human face. While preferencing fine art over illustration, his paintings nevertheless suggest narratives. This comes most to light when his work portrays cartoonishly mismatched juxtapositions of phenomena in fantastical landscapes, implying roots in a highly-developed fictional history. In The Moons (2015), Klychkov's use of oil paints lends his subject a folkloric aspect. Portraying a lunar fantasia, two female nudes are seated atop the roofs of houses, while two more fly in air. A fifth female figure rides on a purple horse through in the center of the scene. The warped spatial distortion of the figures' limbs, as well as the houses, give the image a dionysian feel, while Klychkov's color palette blankets this energy in an ashen-hued tranquility. While verging on the illustrative, the viewer can only imagine the backstory behind such a work. Taken in by the almost littoral calm of the painting, the viewer might feel caught up in the same insouciance with which the two women loll on a... (read more)

Manuel Jiménez Palma - Agora Gallery
Through April 25, 2018 - New York

Spanish artist Manuel Jiménez Palma uses pastels to capture quotidian scenes, imbuing the ordinary with uninhibited emotional affect. He utilizes a high-keyed, exaggerated palette and emphasizes mark making over realism, giving his works a sense of spontaneity. Drawing directly onto paper without sketching, Palma manipulates the shapes and colors in his compositions to create entirely subjective scenes that challenge perception. In works such as Beers in Andalusia., Palma images the aftermath of a small gathering, the intense red, ochre, violet, and aqua palette mirroring the exuberance of the artist. Meanwhile, Sleeping in the Yard., captures the attitude of a languid, napping cat, its surrounds transformed into a highly patterned and richly decorative abstraction. In Roofs of Seville., Palma renders the Spanish town's skyline in pared down shapes of bold, unmodulated color, his confident mark making and vibrant palette indicating the energy of the bustling town. In each work, Palma utilizes the emotionality of brilliant color to suffuse conventional scenes with radical subjectivity.

Barbara Demsar - Agora Gallery
Through April 25, 2018 - New York

In her playful abstract landscapes, Barbara Demsar paints the natural world with a vivid, childlike optimism. Harmonious, bright, and airy, her lemon yellow and eggshell compositions are littered with delicate doodles, dots of pigment, and whimsical, collaged shapes. These distinctive narratives reflect the artist's perception of the real world; her subjective philosophies are expressed via a unique and joyful pictorial language. Demsar's melodious landscapes share a roster of recurring symbols. In addition to thin loops and sinuous lines, tiny infinity symbols, three point crowns, and hollow half rings appear throughout her works, lending a sense of connectedness to each buoyant composition. Furthermore, Landscape and Good Morning Sun each feature markers of a horizon line and a sun, as well as various other duplicated visual signifiers that remain mysterious. There Somewhere is a hazier composition featuring small clusters of evocative shapes atop a subtly printed background. Finally, Here and Now utilizes an all over composition, and bright red flecks and dabs of paint punctuate the golden, textured background.

Matus Prochaczka (Wekoworks) - Agora Gallery
Through April 25, 2018 - New York

Matus Prochaczka creates vivid renderings of futuristic automobiles in his works that blend digital art and traditional painting techniques. Using acrylic sprays, acrylic paint, and a palette knife, the artist embellishes his digitally printed inventions with painterly streaks and smears that evoke speed. Modeled on sophisticate computer software, the metallic cars have razor sharp edges and finely wrought details, but it is the artist's hand that injects the works with dynamism. Prochaczka's 14_Fernando Alonso at Virtual Track features a slick Formula One racer whirring through space. Though the artist designs the cars himself, he maintains the logos and sponsors seen on typical Formula One cars in order to evoke the mix of fanaticism and nostalgia associated with the sport. 33_Max Verstappen Night Race depicts a space age car that is almost completely abstracted, blurred nearly beyond recognition by threateningly fast speeds. Speed is further emphasized with strong strokes of acrylics and spray paint in the artist's most recent work, 29_Alonso INDY500, a digital print with the glimpse of a driver in a split second as he races along the Indianapolis 500 track.

Miguel A. Chavez - Agora Gallery
Through April 25, 2018 - New York

Miguel A. Chavez's calming paintings invite his audience to consider the bucolic beauty within the everyday experience. Working in predominantly oil on canvas, the majority of Chavez's oeuvre encompasses highly detailed renderings of neighborhood facades executed with softly textured brushstrokes and compositional clarity. In works such as San Diego House, white stucco bungalows thatched with terra-cotta roof tiles and turquoise wooden shutters lay nestled within Californian eucalyptus and palm trees. In Colorado House History Museum, a large log cabin, its edges lined with a white wooden trim, peers bashfully towards the audience amidst a curtain of Coloradan tree leaves, standing upon a carpet of clay and stone. Born and raised in Córdoba, Argentina, Chavez has traveled to and lived within areas of Mexico and Canada; the artist's Latin heritage emanates throughout his illustrious oeuvre. Chavez's works have been displayed in a multitude of private collections and institutions in cities across the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Japan, and throughout the continent of Europe. The artist currently resides in San Diego, California.

Through April 25, 2018 - New York

Gagosian is pleased to present the first career-spanning exhibition of drawings and works on paper by Cy Twombly, organized in association with the Cy Twombly Foundation. Throughout his career, Twombly sustained an active engagement with drawing, gesture, and making marks on paper. His urgent, meandering lines embody the intimate energies that carry over into his paintings, sculptures, and photography. Despite their enigmatic qualities, Twombly’s drawings are strikingly articulate in their rhythm, line, and allusions. At once economical and deeply sensual, they contain a timeless language, mediating between ancient and modern culture.

Filmed on location, Amazon Adventure plunges audiences into a wild world of breathtaking beauty and captivating animals, including an array of nature’s masters of mimicry. Painstakingly researched for three years, the film enlisted the expertise of more than 100 scientists and historical advisers. The team’s commitment to authenticity not only resulted in this rigorous re-creation, even using actual instruments and tools from the 1850s, but the writing team also incorporated many of Bates’ own words, as he was a gifted stor...
