Cracker & Camper Van Beethoven - Highline Ballroom
January 14, 2018 - New York

Cracker Cracker's tenth and most recent studio effort, the double-album, Berkeley To Bakersfield, finds this uniquely American band traversing two different sides of the California landscape -- the northern Bay area and further down-state in Bakersfield. Despite being less than a five-hour drive from city to city, musically, these two regions couldn't be further apart from one another. In the late '70s and '80s a harder-edged style of rock music emerged from the Bay area, while Bakersfield is renowned for its own iconic twangy country music popularized, most famously, by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard in the '60s and '70s. Yet despite these differences, they are both elements that Cracker's two cofounders, David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, have embraced to some degree on nearly every one of their studio albums over the last two decades. On Berkeley To Bakersfield, however, instead of integrating these two genres together within one disc, they've neatly compartmentalized them onto their own respective regionally-titled LPs. Memphis Bleek - Highline Ballroom
January 15, 2018 - New York

Rapper Memphis Bleek was raised in Brooklyn, NY's Marcy Projects housing community, making his recorded debut in 1996 on Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt. A member of the Roc-A-Fella Records stable, Bleek made his solo debut in 1999 with Coming of Age. While his debut did warrant plenty of attention, he wasn't able to capitalize on the hype surrounding his debut, resulting in a questionable collection of songs -- powered primarily by its Swizz Beatz-produced lead single -- that didn't live up to the lofty expectations many had. In late 2000, his sophomore album, The Understanding, appeared alongside Bleek's high-profile appearance with Jay-Z in the "Hey Papi" single from the Nutty Professor II soundtrack and its Hype Williams-directed video (featuring a cameo appearance by Pamela Anderson). In addition to this eye-catching promotional ploy, the lead single from The Understanding, "Mind Right," soon followed. His third album M.A.D.E. appeared in 2003, followed by 534 in 2005.

Comedy Classes: Comedy Writing Immersion One-Day Workshop - Gotham Comedy Club
January 20, 2018 - New York

Every comic needs strong material; it's the cornerstone of their act. What you say impacts how you perform, and what the audience will think of you. Your material literally defines you as a comedian to the audience. We need a constant supply of new material in order to keep ourselves relevant as performers. Sometimes we seem dry. The ideas don't come to us quickly, or the premises don't seem to be funny once we work them. More often than not, the problem isn't the concept; the problem is your process. COMEDY WRITING IMMERSION deconstructs your process and opens you up to other, more productive ways of finding and developing your comedy. COMEDY WRITING IMMERSION was developed by, and is taught by Jim Mendrinos, the author of the Complete Idiot's Guide to Comedy Writing (Alpha Books) and expands on the ideas he touch on in the print edition. COMEDY WRITING IMMERSION is a 1 day intensive on writing comedy. Not cookie cutter comedy with outdated formulas and tricks, but writing rich comedy that is perfectly suited to your performing needs. Mining what you find funny, and bringing that to the forefront.

San Marco Quartet - 5 Manhattan West
Through February 21, 2018 - New York

Video Installation by David Rokeby; San Marco Quartet layers all the actions of people and pigeons on Piazza San Marco in Venice into a pair of evolving images showing two views. The images are lit by movement; things that are not moving are invisible. Walking pigeons leave worm-like traces. Gathered people disappear through their shifting motions. Tour groups flow across the image like a river. The left side combines the activities into a very long exposed image that develops over several minutes. In the projection on the right, the past fades more quickly. The moving images are presented as two video projections mirrored at their point of meeting. They use the same material and with differences in how time is portrayed. They present a record of the temporary social architecture that is shaped by the permanent physical architecture of the piazza. Curated by Pari Nadimi. ABOUT DAVID ROKEBY David Rokeby is an installation artist based in Toronto, Canada. He has been creating and exhibiting since 1982. For the first part of his career he focused on interactive pieces that directly engage the human body, or that involve artificial perception systems. In the last deca... (read more)
