The New Tarot, The U.S. Americans - The Bowery Ballroom
August 04, 2018 - New York

NYC-based, sister-fronted, post-genre group, The New Tarot, gear up to release debut full-length album, in the wake of their third EP, God of Science. The new yet-to-be-named LP is about enlightenment from another century and revelation in an era of political and spiritual uncertainty. Singles from the last release, "Heavy Metal," "Tell Me You Like Me" and "Solid Sun" paved the way for the debut full-length. The EP adopted the name of title track "God of Science," a sardonic take on modern faith, yet the themes running through this collection have a much wider range – from social media-based egoism to ephemeral existence. Psychology Today, who premiered "Heavy Metal" did an in-depth interview with songwriter, Monika Walker, on its theme: magical consciousness – it's been a fan-favorite ever since. Previous EP, STELLA!, made a splash with "Memory Kills," which made its debut on NYLON, who describe the single, "ethereal, but too tough to be called dreamy, and upbeat in all the right places." The video for title track, "Stella," premiered on CMJ this past Halloween, which was fitting for the spooky vibe and haunted set, where it was shot. A new video for "That Ain't Me" is currently i... Marking the culmination of their residency at Abrons Arts Center, Not an edge but a hinge presents works across a range of media, including painting, sculpture, video, and site-specific installation, and is organized by AIRspace curatorial residents Christian Camacho-Light and Alexis Wilkinson. Aligning with Abrons' wide-ranging multidisciplinary performance and educational programming, Not an edge but a hinge attends to difference within shared time and space. Occupying the building's three main galleries, the exhibition takes a kaleidoscopic approach in order to honor the complex and shifting affinities between individual artworks. In the exhibition, several works withhold the figure from view, privileging the outline or trace over direct representation, investigating notions of disclosure or voyeurism. Others establish an indexical, material, or metaphorical relationship to place, often marking displacement or loss.... (read more)

Jonah Matranga - Mercury Lounge
August 30, 2018 - New York

Jonah Matranga is essentially unique. His music is somewhere in between Prince, Bjork and The Clash, but it doesn't really fit into any genre. Over the last 20 years, he's fronted influential post-hardcore band Far, along with lots else (onelinedrawing, New End Original, Gratitude, Camorra, etc). Jonah has played with, collaborated with, and influenced artists from Frank Turner to Kimya Dawson to Deftones to Sepultura to Jimmy Eat World to Fort Minor to Lupe Fiasco… and lots more. Jonah has played as many house shows as he has huge festivals, and he brings the same thing regardless of where he's playing — ambitious songwriting, weird wit and honesty, and an interest in making it personal, direct, and fresh every time.
