Rock concert meets performance art meets burlesque, you might say, or "tight, fierce, hilarious and out of their minds" according to The Wall Street Journal. The Brooklyn-based band is a collaboration between singer/actress Lauren Worsham (Drama Desk Award winner and Tony Award nominee) and her musician/writer husband Kyle Jarrow (Obie Award winner). It also features the talents of guitarist Kevin Wunderlich, drummer Perry Silver, bassist Eric Day, cellist David Blasher, and a rotating cast of backup singers including Gizel Jimenez, Michaela Bryce, Kristin Piacentile, Sharone Sayegh, Katie Lee Hill and Jessi Suzuki. No Excuses: Maggie Nelson on Sarah Lucas - New Museum
December 13, 2018 - New York,

Join renowned writer and scholar Maggie Nelson as she responds to Sarah Lucas's work and to the exhibition "Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel," the first American survey of the pioneering artist. Known for her genre-defying writing that often weaves together personal narrative and critical theory, Nelson brings a unique voice to art criticism. Her talk will plumb the provocations, humor, and critical shape-shifting in Lucas's practice and will reflect on the stakes of the artist's embrace of pleasure and perversion. Maggie Nelson is the author of nine books of poetry and prose, including the National Book Critics Circle Award winner The Argonauts (2015), The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning (2011), Bluets (2009), The Red Parts: Autobiography of a Trial (2007), and Jane: A Murder (2005). She has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Nonfiction, an NEA Fellowship in Poetry, an Innovative Literature Fellowship from Creative Capital, and an Arts Writers Fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation. In 2016, she was awarded a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship. She lives in Los Angeles.

Phony Ppl - Mercury Lounge
December 28, 2018 - New York

Age Limit: 16 and Over The band we know as Phony Ppl is a mix of people, time, and sound that's been nurtured over generations in Brooklyn. They were a group of kids who started making music together during after school sessions in the homes of their creative families, and who grew up to cultivate a sound that's as much punk as is it soul. A quintet of live music blending acoustic instrumentation with electronic inputs and different vocal styles, their outlook on life and music refuses to be boxed in. Over the years, the bandmates have ebbed and flowed, but now they've reached their final form with these five original members: Elbee Thrie on vocal duties, Aja Grant on the keys, drummer Matt Byas, guitarist Elijah Rawk, and bassist Bari Bass. Their sound is a mix of soul, R&B, funk, hip hop, jazz, pop, and everything between and beyond. It's very DIY, too. They do their own songwriting, arrangement, mixing, and production. All of the bandmates come from musical families (Byas's dad is DJ Jazzy Jay of Zulu Nation) and they went to an assortment of music classes, camps, and schools around New York and the country. The benefits of all this shine through in their comfort with their ins... (read more)

Through December 30, 2018 - New York

Back by popular demand! Following its 2017 critically-acclaimed world premiere, which introduced many New York audiences to the widely popular British art form known as the Panto, Jack & the Beanstalk returns this holiday season with even more radical joy. Jack needs the whole town's support to help them chop down the beanstalk. In the process, Jack and their neighbors free themselves from their oppressor, the plundering Giant Rump. Written by disabled actor/writer Mat Fraser, directed by feminist artist Julie Atlas Muz and featuring an intergenerational, mixed-ability cast, Jack & the Beanstalk brings the Lower East Side together with a family-friendly holiday production that is inherently irreverent, lightly political, and has the message that eventually good triumphs over evil.
