Brooklynvegan Presents The Dead Milkmen - Irving Plaza
December 15, 2018 - New York

Although there are numerous, conflicting, tales of how, when, where, and sometimes why the Dead Milkmen initially formed, the most reliable evidence points to band founder Joe Jack Talcum's decision, in the late 1970's, to create a band based entirely upon a group of woodcuts he discovered in the basement of The Vatican. Talcum then recruited acquaintance Rodney Anonymous and the pair immediately set about unlearning everything they had previously learned about music and spending countless hours screaming at inanimate objects. In 1982 bassist Dave Blood was added to the group after impressing Talcum and Anonymous with his ability to cover passing vehicles with ketchup. Shortly afterward, and entirely against his own will and better judgment, drummer Dean Clean joined the band. In 1985, the band, or "The Dead Milkmen" as they were now known, released their debut album "Big Lizard in My Backyard" which was instantly declared "The greatest cultural achievement of our time" (by the band themselves). Big Lizard was followed by "Eat Your Paisley" in 1986 and "Bucky Fellini" in 1987. The hit single "Punk Rock Girl" from the Dead Milkmen's 1988 release "Beelzebubba" opened many do... (read more)

The Sweater Songs: Performing Songs From Weezer's Blue Album, Pinkerton & B-sides - Mercury Lounge
December 15, 2018 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over What started out as a fun idea to mix up their regular original music sets has now turned into a huge event with every show bringing out more and more fans. The Sweater Songs perform early Weezer albums in their entirety such as iconic classics "The Blue Album" and "Pinkerton" which include songs like "Buddy Holly", "Say It Ain't So", "El Scorcho", "The Good Life" and of course their namesake "Undone/Sweater Song." The band is made up of five life-long musicians who are all extremely active in the New York City music scene. Wes Hutchinson, Oscar Albis Rodriguez, Mike Chiavaro, Gunnar Olsen and Robert Cooper have been playing, writing and recording original music for almost ten years but they have all agreed that The Sweater Songs is possibly the most fun they could ever have in an evening. The Sweater Songs pay homage to the "Buddy Holly" video (as well as geek rock in general) by wearing cardigans, collared shirts, ties and those classic thick-rimmed glasses—which they've been known to hand out at their shows as well. They've sold out several venues in New York City (which is no easy feat) and frequently play venues to crowds of anywhere from 300-1000 peopl... (read more)

Green questions whether Utopia might be an internal place, investigated through personal and intimate moments and alongside the community. The notion of what it means to be safe persists inside an environment that is continually built and deconstructed. Anavy's artwork displays on 10-foot cylindrical pillars used by the dancers throughout the piece.

Phony Ppl - Mercury Lounge
December 28, 2018 - New York

Age Limit: 16 and Over The band we know as Phony Ppl is a mix of people, time, and sound that's been nurtured over generations in Brooklyn. They were a group of kids who started making music together during after school sessions in the homes of their creative families, and who grew up to cultivate a sound that's as much punk as is it soul. A quintet of live music blending acoustic instrumentation with electronic inputs and different vocal styles, their outlook on life and music refuses to be boxed in. Over the years, the bandmates have ebbed and flowed, but now they've reached their final form with these five original members: Elbee Thrie on vocal duties, Aja Grant on the keys, drummer Matt Byas, guitarist Elijah Rawk, and bassist Bari Bass. Their sound is a mix of soul, R&B, funk, hip hop, jazz, pop, and everything between and beyond. It's very DIY, too. They do their own songwriting, arrangement, mixing, and production. All of the bandmates come from musical families (Byas's dad is DJ Jazzy Jay of Zulu Nation) and they went to an assortment of music classes, camps, and schools around New York and the country. The benefits of all this shine through in their comfort with their ins... (read more)
