"Art Benefit Raises Funds for Human Trafficking Awareness Play" - Chinatown Soup Gallery
Through February 16, 2018 - New York

In 2017, more than 3,500 sex trafficking cases were reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, and there are thousands of cases that go unreported because far too often the victims of trafficking have been silenced through a fear of recriminations and violence by their handlers. That is why Mirage Theatre is working with playwright Melisa Tien, a NY Foundation of the Arts Fellow and member of New Dramatists to create a play that gives voice to victims and survivors of human trafficking. Her script and the resulting production will confront the ordeals faced by the most vulnerable members of our society who live in a form of modern slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally.

Hercules: In Search of a Hero - Abrons Arts Center Henry Street Settlement
February 09, 2019 - Manhattan

Hercules: In Search of a Hero is a new theater piece combining excepts from Euripides' plays Alcestis and Hercules, along with original material, to explore the meaning of heroism in our time. Hercules is a man of violence, most of the time heroic by killing. Alcestis, on the other hand, is a woman who stands out for an act of self-sacrifice: she is heroic by dying. Placing the action in a modern setting, Hercules: In Search of a Hero challenges the conventional, masculine notion of heroism and contemplates a feminine alternative

The Trial of the Catonsville Nine Talkback Tonigh - Abrons Arts Center Henry Street Settlement
February 09, 2019 - Manhattan

THE TRIAL OF THE CATONSVILLE NINE TALKBACK TONIGHTwith Frida Berrigan, columnist for "Waging Nonviolence" and daughter of Philip Berrigan The riveting true story of the unlikely activists that set the nation ablaze. It is 1968 and the war is raging in Vietnam. A draft card is viewed by many as a death certificate. In the midst of a divided country, with corrosive mistrust in government and authority, nine would-be bystanders in Catonsville, Maryland decide that complacency is complicity — it is time for action. Their single act of conscience to halt the draft awakens a national resistance. Transport Group Artistic Director Jack Cummings III has radically re-imagined this provocative piece of theatre created from the actual court transcripts of the Catonsville Nine trial. Actors David Huynh, Mia Katigback and Eunice Wong play over a dozen roles as they excavate the stories and inspiration behind these history-making activists.

Rasputina - Mercury Lounge
February 09, 2019 - New York

Ryder Cooley Age Limit: 21 and Over Pioneers in the use of cello as the sole instrument within a rock band, Rasputina has been inspiring young string players to commit a number of musical sins since 1996. The group's concept was written as a manifesto, and manifested accordingly by directress Melora Creager as a wily subterfuge for a plot to open audiences to adventure. The funny, the sad, the heavy, the tender-- it can all exist together. Employing elaborate costuming spanning a number of historical periods, Rasputina brings marginalized historical female figures and stories to light in the pop form, using archetypal characters such as Indian princesses, Hawaiian handmaidens and Medieval queens. Melora last performed in Europe with Nirvana, on their final tour in 1994. Over the years, Rasputina has performed/recorded with Marilyn Manson, Porno For Pyros, Cheap Trick, Goo Goo Dolls and many others.

Cherry Glazerr - The Bowery Ballroom
February 16, 2019 - New York

Cherry Glazerr released their explosive full-length album Apocalipstick on Inauguration Day in 2017. You might think the two tumultuous years since would have driven the band toward even more explicitly topical commentary. But as singer/guitarist/founder Clementine Creevy began writing the first of some thirty songs that would make up the new Stuffed & Ready, she found unexpected inspiration by turning inward. That meant leading her band somewhere new and writing songs that would reveal aspects of herself she realized she'd once concealed. Apocalipstick sizzled with Creevy's confidence, vision and fiercely idiosyncratic personality. Stuffed & Ready announces Creevy as a songwriter newly tempered and strengthened by coming to terms with her own uncertainty confusion and anger. It's her go-for-broke honesty that gives Stuffed & Ready its power and gravity. "I am telling my story of how I feel and where I am in life," she says. "I'm exploring my own self-doubt. I'm confused about what happiness is and I'm searching for my place in the world. With Apocalipstick, I was an over-confident teenager trying to solve the world's problems. With Stuffed & Ready, I'm a much more weary and perhap... (read more)

"Betty and the Belrays" - Theater for the New City
Through February 17, 2019 - NEW YORK CITY

Girl groups are now an iconic part of the history of the recording industry in America. In a brief, shining period between the payola scandal and the British invasion, American girl groups swamped the charts with songs that are now classic: mostly sweet harmonies on sentimental themes, with classic melody constructions and simplistic love lyrics. Partially because of the concern that America's teens would like the songs better if they didn't know the singers' color, many girl groups were anonymous except for their recordings. Almost all of them were black, but that was not known to many fans at the time. "Betty & The Belrays" asks, "what would have happened if a white girl group had actually tried to recapitulate the careers of these black groups?" If you love the songs of The Chiffons, The Crystals, The Shirelles and The Ronettes, you'll find heaven in this production, whose music recaptures the innovation and fresh, optimistic buoyancy that ruled the AM airwaves in the Kennedy era. The playwright calls attention to the importance of black music in our culture by honoring the imitation that was its sincerest form of flattery. He also shows off the risks that white perform... Subway Cinema Presents: The Hong-kong-a-thon Ii: Electric Boogaloo - Anthology Film Archives

People are still talking about last year's Hong-Kong-a-Thon and this year we've spent even more money, to bring even rarer movies, to blow your mind even harder! This 12-hour, six-film marathon showcases the movies that shot first, hit hardest, kicked highest, took the hardest falls, the biggest jumps, delivered the fastest punches, and left the audience with two smoking holes where their eyeballs used to be. We won't reveal the titles until they appear onscreen, but rest assured that these six 35mm prints are deep cuts that haven't played in New York City in at least 18 years. Out of print on DVD, or never available uncut and in their original language, these movies ask the big questions: what if Evel Knievel was a serial killer? How many floors can you drop a child and have them survive? Why does everybody die on Christmas? If you want answers, don't miss this marathon!
