Pigeonholed Presents “Not Clown,” an Allegory for Free Speech - Robert Moss Theater at 440 Studios
Through January 28, 2018 - New York

Pigeonholed, a NYC-based theater company, presents “Not Clown” by Steve Moore and Carlos Treviño of Austin-based Physical Plant Theater, January 24-28, 2018 at the Robert Moss Theater at 440 Lafayette Street, NYC. In 2006, the play enjoyed an extended run at NYC’s famed Soho Rep. This production marks the NYC revival of this stunningly original, eerily topical and allegorical play. A synopsis states: In a time when clowns are tortured and circuses banned, a renegade troupe enacts the story of a girl who longs for their outlawed life — even as her father commits atrocities on the State’s behalf. Limbs rebel against the body. The cram car bolts for the border. And a round, red nose is a dark souvenir. “Not Clown” is directed by Daniel Adams (2nd Year MFA candidate at Columbia under Anne Bogart) and features Justin Fuller*, Alice Rothman-Hicks*, Adam Foldes, Alana Fu, Tomas Virgadula, Jameson Lisak, Paul Lombardo, Justin Cimino, and Sasha Lazare. (*denotes member of Actors’ Equity Association) Stage Manager is Rachel April. Set and Properties Design by Sarice Olson. Lighting Design by Cheyenne Sykes. Costume and Makeup Design by E.L. Hohn. Shows are at 8pm Wednesday-Saturday ... (read more)

"Art Benefit Raises Funds for Human Trafficking Awareness Play" - Chinatown Soup Gallery
Through February 16, 2018 - New York

In 2017, more than 3,500 sex trafficking cases were reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, and there are thousands of cases that go unreported because far too often the victims of trafficking have been silenced through a fear of recriminations and violence by their handlers. That is why Mirage Theatre is working with playwright Melisa Tien, a NY Foundation of the Arts Fellow and member of New Dramatists to create a play that gives voice to victims and survivors of human trafficking. Her script and the resulting production will confront the ordeals faced by the most vulnerable members of our society who live in a form of modern slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally.

City Symphonies: World City In Its Teens. A Report On Chicago - Anthology Film Archives
January 19, 2019 - New York

"In the spring and summer of 1931, German writer, traveler, photographer, and filmmaker Heinrich Hauser (1901–55) made a trip by car through the American Midwest, with Chicago as his main destination. This voyage resulted in a book, 'Dirt Tracks to Chicago,' and a silent 'city' film, WORLD CITY IN ITS TEENS. Whereas the book covers his entire journey, Hauser's film concentrates on Chicago, with its skyline, skyscrapers, motorized traffic, local industries, labor, mechanized production, and places for leisure. […] Though Hauser considered Chicago to be 'the most beautiful city in the world,' his city symphony is notable for its critique of the modern American city, and of the United States in general. Particularly in the film's fourth section, Hauser shows the negative sides of the metropolis and the effects of mechanized production and rationalized labor: unemployment, poverty, alcoholism, and crime. His Chicago city symphony alternates between fascination and fear, curiosity and critique, enthusiasm and reservation." –Eva Hielscher, THE CITY SYMPHONY PHENOMENON

Fear Is Dead Nihiloceros The Muckrakers Crowd The Airwaves - The Bowery Electric
January 19, 2019 - New York

This Event Is 21 And Over In today's overcrowded Metal scene it's virtually impossible for a band to rise up and stand out, against the odds, that's what Fear Is Dead is doing. Since 2011 they've been racking up large numbers of awe inspiring live performances, Fear is Dead has garnered the acclaim of many of New York's underground, bringing fans from the Metal scene, and Hardcore / Punk scene together. Melting faces from BK's Knitting Factory to LES Mercury Lounge, most recently packing out Brooklyn's new Metal haven Lucky 13 Saloon. Their unique sound and intense energy some would say is reminiscent of early Machine head and Korn. Established in 2011 by Skila and Jacqueline Burns, the early line up included Anthony Moreno Brown on drums. Jax's guitar and bass stylings set the tone for the heavy sound that would evolve to what we hear today. They released two EPs "Fear Is Dead" in 2011, and "Mourning Ritual" in 2013, that were both well received. Songs like "I'm Slow" "Lie to Me" and "Boomerang" still requested by fans today. The band went on hiatus in 2014, and in 2015 Skila returned with a new line up, composed of Matt Pompeii on Bass, Carlos Crowcell on Drums, and newcomer ... (read more)

King Tuff - the Infinite Smiles Tour - The Bowery Ballroom
January 19, 2019 - New York

Stonefield When asked to describe the title track from his new record, Kyle Thomas—aka King Tuff—takes a deep breath. "It's a song about hitting rock bottom," he says. "I didn't even know what I wanted to do anymore, but I still had this urge—this feeling—like there was this possibility of something else I could be doing… and then I just followed that possibility. To me, that's what songwriting, and art in general, is about. You're chasing something, there is something out there calling to you and you're trying to get at it. 'The Other' is basically where songs come from, it's the hidden world, it's the mystery. It's the invisible hand that guides you whenever you make something. It's the thing I had to rediscover—the sort of voice I had to follow—to bring me back to making music again in a way that felt true and good." After years of non-stop touring, culminating in a particularly arduous stint in support of 2014's Black Moon Spell, Thomas found himself back in Los Angeles experiencing the flipside of the ultimate rock and roll cliche—that of an exhausted musician suddenly unsure where to go or what to do, held prisoner by a persona that he never meant to create, that bore litt... January 20, 2019 - New York

Age Limit: 21 and Over apb formed in 1979 in the small rural town of Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Ignoring their remote location the band took inspiration from the punk do it yourself ethic of the burgeoning independent music scene. With a hard-working approach George Cheyne drums, Glenn Roberts guitar and Iain Slater bass and vocals were spotted by Aberdeen's small independent label Oily . In 1981 they were impressed enough by the band's live shows to finance the band's first single Chain Reaction. The band's first single was a two and a half minute punk/pop song with fuzzy distorted guitar and scottish inflected vocals. Already the band was evolving with a sparser and more rhythmical sound.

Jenkins is a member of Free Nation, a hip-hop group that promotes creative thought without accepting narrow views imposed by the powers that be. In the spring of 2013 Mick released a mixtape entitled "Trees and Truths" that quickly became a local favorite, buoyed by acid jazz-influenced production, biblical allegory and lacerating lyricism. The project was by far his most lyrical body of work and caught the attention of Chicago's incipient gatekeepers. On August 12, 2014, Jenkins released "The Water[s]", a project spearheaded by the release of "Martyrs", a record that juxtaposes harsh truths about society with thought-provoking single with various underlying messages and subtle notions. Centered around the idea of comparing water to life's truths, "The Water[s]" has garnered national attention and serves as Jenkins' breakout project while receiving critical acclaim. Mick is currently fresh off the release of his debut studio debut album "THC (The Healing Component... (read more)

Cherry Glazerr - The Bowery Ballroom
February 16, 2019 - New York

Cherry Glazerr released their explosive full-length album Apocalipstick on Inauguration Day in 2017. You might think the two tumultuous years since would have driven the band toward even more explicitly topical commentary. But as singer/guitarist/founder Clementine Creevy began writing the first of some thirty songs that would make up the new Stuffed & Ready, she found unexpected inspiration by turning inward. That meant leading her band somewhere new and writing songs that would reveal aspects of herself she realized she'd once concealed. Apocalipstick sizzled with Creevy's confidence, vision and fiercely idiosyncratic personality. Stuffed & Ready announces Creevy as a songwriter newly tempered and strengthened by coming to terms with her own uncertainty confusion and anger. It's her go-for-broke honesty that gives Stuffed & Ready its power and gravity. "I am telling my story of how I feel and where I am in life," she says. "I'm exploring my own self-doubt. I'm confused about what happiness is and I'm searching for my place in the world. With Apocalipstick, I was an over-confident teenager trying to solve the world's problems. With Stuffed & Ready, I'm a much more weary and perhap... (read more)
